This document deals with the likely degradation of air performance of fans tested in standardized airways in accordance with ISO 5801 when compared with the performance of fans tested under actual site conditions. It deals with the performance of a number of generic types of fan and fittings. The results given are intended as guidelines and only provide trends, as the system effect depends on the exact geometry of the fan and disturbing component. The test data presented in this document are taken from an extensive experimental program conducted 20 years ago by NEL (National Engineering Laboratory, UK), mainly on axial and centrifugal fans. Data are also taken from several research projects financially supported by ASHRAE, some of them being carried out in the AMCA laboratory in Chicago, as well as from results published previously by individual fan manufacturers.

ISO 13347-2:2004 gives a detailed description of reverberant room methods for the determination of fan sound power levels. It is for use under standardized laboratory conditions and recognises that tests in situ are subject to increased uncertainty. These test procedures are not necessarily appropriate to site test conditions. Acoustic system effects are presently the subject of considerable research effort. ISO 5136, which covers the in-duct method, and ISO 10302 for small fans, should be used in conjunction with ISO 13347-2:2004.

ISO 13347-3:2004 applies to industrial fans as defined in ISO 5801 and ISO 13349. It is limited to the determination of airborne sound emission for the specified set-ups. Vibration is not measured, nor is the sensitivity of airborne sound emission to vibration effects determined. The sizes of fan which can be tested in accordance with ISO 13347-3:2004 are limited only by the practical aspects of the test set-up. Dimensional limitations, test fan dimensions, and air performance will control the room size, power and mounting requirements for the test fan. The test arrangements in ISO 13347-3:2004 establish the laboratory conditions necessary for a successful test. Rarely will it be possible to meet these requirements in situ and ISO 13347-3:2004 is not intended for field measurements. Intending users are reminded that, in these situations, there may well be additional acoustic system effects where inlet and outlet conditions at the fan are less than ideal. The enveloping surface methods may be used for the determination of open inlet and/or open outlet sound power level of fans for standardized installation types. An estimation (with increased uncertainty) of ducted sound power for fans too small, or otherwise inconvenient, for testing by the in-duct method described in ISO 5136 may also be obtained by the addition of end reflection corrections.

ISO 13347-4:2004 applies to industrial fans as defined in ISO 5801 and ISO 13349. It is limited to the determination of airborne sound emission for the specified set-ups. Vibration is not measured, nor is the sensitivity of airborne sound emission to vibration effects determined. The sizes of the fan, which can be tested in accordance with ISO 13347-4:2004, are limited only by the practical aspects of the test installations. ISO 13347-4:2004 determines sound power by using sound intensity measurements on a measurement surface which encloses the sound source. It provides guidelines on the acoustical environment, ambient noise, measurement surface, and number of measurements. The test set-ups are generally designed to represent the physical orientation of a fan installed in accordance with ISO 5801 and also used in ISO 13347-2.

ISO 13347:2004 deals with the determination of the acoustic performance of industrial fans. In addition, it may be used to determine the acoustic performance of fans combined with an ancillary device such as a roof cowl or damper or, where the fan is fitted with a silencer, the sound power resulting from the fan and silencer combination.

ISO 14695:2003 describes a method of measuring the vibrational characteristics of fans of all types, except those designed solely for air circulation, for example, ceiling fans and table fans. However, it is limited to fans of all types installed with a power of less than 300 kW. For fans of greater power than this, the methods described in ISO 10816-1 and the applicable limits given in ISO 10816-3 may be used. ISO 14695:2003 gives a general method only and does not give criteria for interpretation of data (see ISO 14694). ISO 14695:2003 specifies the measurement of vibration that may be recorded as overall root-mean- square (r.m.s.) velocity, acceleration or displacement, or in terms of a frequency spectrum, within the appropriate frequency range. Methods of testing when suspended on elastic ropes or when installed on resilient mountings are included. It is recognized that the oscillatory forces at mounting points can be a useful measurement for analysing the effects on support structures; but such measurements are outside the scope of ISO 14695:2003.

ISO 14694:2003 gives specifications for vibration and balance limits of fans for all applications except those designed solely for air circulation, for example, ceiling fans and table fans. However, it is limited to fans of all types installed with a power of less than 300 kW or to commercially available standard electric motor with a maximum power of 355 kW (following an R20 series). For fans of greater power than this, the applicable limits are those given in ISO 10816 - 3. Where the fans in an installation have varying powers both above and below 300 kW, and have been the subject of a single contract, then the manufacturer and purchaser shall agree on the appropriate standard to be used. This should normally be based on the majority of units. Fan-equipment foundations and installation practices are beyond the scope of ISO 14694:2003. Foundation design and fan installation are not normally the responsibilities of the fan manufacturer. It is fully expected that the foundations upon which the fan is mounted will provide the support and stability necessary to meet the vibration criteria of the fan as it is delivered from the factory. ISO 14694:2003 is intended to cover only the balance or vibration of the fan and does not take into account the effect of fan vibration on personnel, equipment or processes.
