SIST EN 10253-3:2026 is the Slovenian adoption of the European text prEN 10253-3:2025, published by SIST and prepared by CEN. It specifies technical delivery requirements for seamless and welded butt-welding pipe fittings in austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steels, for users who need a product standard for ordering, manufacture, inspection and acceptance.

What does SIST EN 10253-3:2026 specify?

SIST EN 10253-3:2026 covers butt-welding fittings made of austenitic and austenitic-ferritic (duplex) stainless steel without specific inspection requirements. The fittings named in the scope are elbows, concentric and eccentric reducers, equal and reducing tees, and caps.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, classification and designation, order information, manufacturing process, technical requirements, inspection, sampling, test methods, marking, and handling and packaging. It also includes two annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex AStructural dimensions of fittings
Annex BCommonly used inside diameters and wall thicknesses, metric sizes

In practice, this means the standard is meant to be used when a purchaser needs defined dimensions, material grades, testing, and marking for stainless-steel butt-welding fittings, but not a separate special inspection regime. The introduction also places this part in the EN 10253 series and distinguishes it from the part intended for fittings with specific inspection requirements.

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 10253-3:2026?

SIST EN 10253-3:2026 sets the material, dimensional, manufacturing, inspection and delivery rules that the fittings must meet. The most important points are the steel grades, how fittings are made, what testing applies, and what must be shown in the inspection document and on the product.

Material and manufacturing

Clause 6 lets the steelmaking and product-making process be chosen by the manufacturer, but it requires a quality management system, and for steelmaking also an environmental management system. Where tubes, plate/sheet/strip, or bars are used as starting material, the document points to the corresponding EN product standards. This matters because the fitting can be made by different routes, but the starting material still has to meet the stated product family.

Clause 6.2 requires fusion welding with complete penetration whenever welding is part of manufacture. Welders and welding operators have to be qualified to the named welding standards, and any local repair of weld seams has to follow qualified procedures and be re-tested and heat treated in the same way as the original weld if heat treatment applies. This is important because weld quality is part of the product quality, not just a fabrication detail.

Chemical composition and mechanical properties

Clause 7.2 requires the cast analysis to comply with the chemical composition tables for austenitic steels and for austenitic-ferritic steels. Clause 7.4 links the room-temperature mechanical properties to the relevant tables and, for some cases, to additional optional testing. For buyers, that means the grade designation alone is not enough - the cast analysis and mechanical properties are part of the delivery requirement.

The document also gives room-temperature and, where relevant, elevated-temperature mechanical properties, together with impact properties and references to heat treatment condition. It also notes special treatment for wall thicknesses greater than 60 mm and for certain cold-formed fittings that are not finally solution annealed. This matters because properties can change with thickness and forming route.

Surface condition, internal soundness and leak tightness

Clause 7.6 requires fittings to be free from cracks, surface inclusions, slag and porosity, and it sets rules for dressing of imperfections and minimum remaining wall thickness. Surface finishing must allow defects to be identified, and the cleaned surface must be metallically clean by a method suitable for stainless steels. In practice, the manufacturer has to control both appearance and metal loss during finishing.

Clause 7.6.3 requires the weld area to be free from cracks, lack of fusion and lack of penetration, and it allows non-destructive testing of the weld area when Option 7 is ordered. Clause 7.8 requires all fittings to be leak tight. This is important because even if the fitting looks acceptable, it still has to pass the integrity checks needed for service.

Dimensions, tolerances and end preparation

Clause 7.7 states that commonly used outside diameters and wall thicknesses are covered by EN ISO 1127, while commonly used inside diameters are listed in Annex B. Annex A gives the structural dimensions for elbows, tees, reducers and caps, and the clause allows certain alternative structural dimensions to be agreed when Option 8 is used. That gives the purchaser a clear reference point for geometry and also a way to agree non-standard dimensions.

The dimensional rules also include outside-diameter tolerances, out-of-roundness limits, wall-thickness tolerances, tolerances on structural dimensions, and tolerances on form. Fittings are delivered with square-cut ends unless end bevelling is agreed. In practice, the buyer should check whether the ordered dimensions fit the connected pipework and the chosen welding preparation.

Inspection, sampling and testing

Clause 8 requires a test report 2.2 in accordance with EN 10204, unless a different inspection document is agreed. Clause 9 defines the test unit by type, model, dimensions, process, grade, weld process, cast, heat-treatment batch and production lot, and it sets the maximum number of pieces in a test unit by diameter. This matters because it controls how many fittings are covered by each set of tests.

Clause 10 lists the test methods, including chemical analysis, tensile testing, weld testing, bend testing, intergranular corrosion testing, dimensional testing, visual inspection, non-destructive testing, material identification and leak-tightness testing. Several of these are optional and only apply when the corresponding option is ordered. That gives users a menu of added controls when the application needs them.

Marking and packaging

Clause 11 requires marking with the manufacturer’s mark, country code, reference to the document, steel designation, cast identification, welded or seamless status, dimensions, and third-party mark where relevant. Clause 12 states the normal packaging condition and allows special packaging, coating or end plugs when agreed. In practice, the marking links the fitting to its inspection document, and the packaging agreement protects the product during transport and storage.

What terms does SIST EN 10253-3:2026 define?

  • Model - the designation for elbows, return bends, reducers, caps and tees; it fixes the shape and, for elbows and return bends, the bending diameter.
  • Welded fitting - a fitting made from welded tube, or from plate/sheet/strip where welding is part of manufacture.
  • Seamless fitting - a fitting made without welding from starting material that is not welded.
  • Purchaser - the person or organisation that orders the products to this document.
  • Employer - the organisation for which a person works; this can be the manufacturer, supplier, or a third party such as an NDT provider.
  • DN - the conventional dimension used in piping; it is a non-measurable nominal size.
  • TC - test category.

Who uses SIST EN 10253-3:2026?

SIST EN 10253-3:2026 is used by pipe fitting manufacturers, steel suppliers, purchasers, quality managers, inspectors and welding/NDT personnel. It is relevant to procurement and production of stainless-steel butt-welding fittings, to acceptance testing, and to the preparation of inspection documents and marking.

It is also relevant where fittings are ordered by exact geometry and material grade, because the standard gives the naming rules, dimensional tables, test unit rules and option list that support a clear purchase order.

What changed in SIST EN 10253-3:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 10253-3:2026 supersedes EN 10253-3:2008. The European foreword states these main changes:

  • clarified different models of reducers and tees
  • updated technical requirements and dimensions to reflect the current state of the art
  • changed option 3
  • revised figures
  • updated normative references
  • introduced metric dimensions tables
  • removed footnote a) and b) from Table 11 because they added no further information

Which standards are used with SIST EN 10253-3:2026?

  • EN 10020 - defines and classifies steel grades.
  • EN 10021 - gives general technical delivery conditions for steel products.
  • EN 10027-1 and EN 10027-2 - define steel names and numerical steel designations.

  • EN ISO 377 - gives sampling and test-piece preparation rules.
  • EN ISO 6892-1 and EN ISO 6892-2 - define tensile testing at room and elevated temperature.
  • EN ISO 4136, EN ISO 5173, EN ISO 3651-2 - cover weld tensile testing, bend testing and intergranular corrosion testing.
  • EN ISO 9712, EN ISO 14732, EN ISO 9606-1, EN ISO 15614-1 - cover NDT personnel and welding qualification.
  • EN 10266 - supplies symbols and definitions used in product standards.
  • EN ISO 3166-1 - provides country codes for marking.
  • The EN 10253 series parts listed in the foreword - Part 1, Part 2 and Part 4 - place this document in the same family of butt-welding pipe fittings standards.

What does the SIST EN 10253-3:2026 document contain?

The document contains tables for chemical composition, mechanical properties, reinforcement limits, inspection and test frequency, tolerances, and test-unit sizes. It also contains figures that define the geometry of elbows, tees, reducers and caps, plus the formulae used for internal diameter, out-of-roundness and leak-tightness pressure.

Annex A provides the structural dimensions for the different fitting types, including metric and ISO-based tables. Annex B gives commonly used inside diameters and wall thicknesses in metric sizes, which helps when selecting a fitting that matches a piping system.

Introduction
In writing this document the competent committee recognized that there are two broad types of products
commonly used, and decided to reflect these in the standard by differentiating between two parts.
EN 10253-3 describes fittings without formal reference to the pressure resistance, which are not
intended to be used in applications covered by the Pressure Equipment Directive (2014/68/EU) in
categories I to IV.
EN 10253-4 defines two types of fittings:
— Type A fittings have the same wall thickness at the welding ends and at the body of the fitting as a
pipe having the same specified wall thickness. Their resistance to internal pressure is, in general, less
than that of a straight pipe with the same dimensions.
— Type B fittings showing increased wall thickness at the body of the fitting are designed to resist the
same internal pressure as a straight pipe with same dimensions.
These two types of fittings are intended to be used in applications covered by the EU Directive
2014/68/EU. According to this Directive and further interpretation guidelines (e.g. guideline G – 19),
seamless fittings are considered as materials whereas welded fittings are considered as components.
Therefore, in some areas of this document, provisions for seamless and welded fittings are different.
The selection of steel type and requirement level depend on many factors; the properties of the fluid to
be conveyed, the service conditions, the design code and any statutory requirements should all be taken
into consideration. Therefore, this gives no detailed guidelines for the application of different parts. It is
the ultimate responsibility of the user to select the appropriate part for the intended application.

in EN 10021 shall apply, unless otherwise specified.
The allowed pressures and temperatures are the responsibility of the customer according to the state of
the art and in application of the safety coefficients in the application regulations, codes and standards.
In common, joint coefficient is used in the calculation of the thicknesses of components which include one
or several butt welds, other than circumferential:
— for equipment subject to random non-destructive testing: 0,85;
— for equipment not subject to non-destructive testing other than visual inspection: 0,7.
7.2 Chemical composition – Cast analysis
The cast analysis reported by the steel manufacturer shall apply and comply with the requirements of
Table 2 for austenitic steels and of Table 3 for austenitic-ferritic steels.
7.3 Weldability
Fittings covered by this document are weldable, however account should be taken of the fact that the
behaviour of the steel during and after welding is dependent not only on the steel, but also essentially on
the conditions of preparing and carrying out the welding and on the final use of the fitting.
