SIST EN 1559-3:2026 is a SIST standard for the technical delivery conditions of iron castings. It is the Slovenian adoption of prEN 1559-3 and is used by purchasers, foundries and inspectors when they order, make and accept castings made from cast iron materials. It sets the extra delivery requirements beyond the general rules, including purchaser information, welding, inspection and surface acceptance.
What does SIST EN 1559-3:2026 specify?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 specifies the additional technical delivery conditions for castings made from all cast iron materials. It applies to iron castings produced in sand or permanent moulds, by centrifugal casting, continuous casting or investment casting.
The document is built around purchaser information, designation, manufacture, requirements, inspection, marking, packaging and complaints. Its annexes give guidance for acceptance criteria and a summary of changes from the previous edition.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Guidelines for acceptance criteria for outer and inner conditions using non-destructive testing (NDT) |
| Annex B | Guidelines for acceptance criteria for surface condition and visual check |
| Annex C | Significant technical changes from the previous edition |
What are the key requirements of SIST EN 1559-3:2026?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 starts with what the purchaser has to provide. Clause 4 makes the relevant wall thickness mandatory, and it allows agreement on items such as as-cast condition, heat treatment, stress relieving, coating, machining sequence and test-unit formation. In practice, this is the information that sets the delivery basis before casting starts.
Clause 5 requires cast iron material designations to follow EN 1560. That keeps the ordering language aligned with the cast iron designation system used in the rest of the series.
Clause 6 sets the welding rules. Welding must be done by a qualified welder, welding procedures must follow EN ISO 15614-3 and the recommendations of EN 1011-8, and production welding is only allowed when the manufacturer and purchaser agree in writing.
Clause 7 covers the product requirements. It includes chemical composition, mechanical properties and other properties for both the material and the casting, plus the condition of the casting, mass and any extra condition requirements agreed at order acceptance.
Clause 7 also sets the rules for outer and inner condition checks. The document points to specific NDT methods - liquid penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT), ultrasonic (UT) and radiographic (RT) - and links them to the relevant European Standards. The method, acceptance criteria and area of application depend on casting thickness, material and the size, position and orientation of possible discontinuities.
Surface condition is handled separately. Clause 7 allows the roughness of cast or ground surfaces to be specified, using EN 1370 for acceptance levels. Annex B then gives guidance for visual checking of surface irregularities and for matching the acceptance level to the process and surface area.
Clause 8 covers inspection control. It addresses inspection documents, test units, samples, tests, invalidation, retests and sorting or reprocessing, so the document can be used for both routine acceptance and dispute resolution.
What terms does SIST EN 1559-3:2026 define?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 uses the terms and definitions from EN 1559-1 and the applicable material standard. These are the main terms that matter when applying the part:
- Wall thickness - the thickness the purchaser must state because it affects the casting specification and inspection basis.
- Test unit - the group of castings or samples used together for inspection and testing.
- Production welding - welding carried out during production, which needs a written agreement.
- Marked zone - a drawing-defined area where stricter or different acceptance criteria apply.
- Discontinuity class - the category used in Annex A to separate surface, linear and internal indications.
- Acceptance level - the agreed level used to judge surface roughness or visual irregularities.
- NDT - non-destructive testing, meaning inspection methods that examine the casting without destroying it.
Who uses SIST EN 1559-3:2026?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 is used by foundries, purchasers, quality managers and inspection personnel working with iron castings. It is also relevant to welding coordinators and testing laboratories that need to agree welding, NDT and acceptance criteria before delivery.
What changed in SIST EN 1559-3:2026 from the previous edition?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 supersedes EN 1559-3:2011. The stated changes are:
- the title was modified
- clause 2 was updated
- Table 1 references were updated
- Table A.1 had its third column removed
- Clause A.5 was removed
- the bibliography was updated
- the document-wide wording was changed to refer to the corresponding clause in EN 1559-1
Which standards are used with SIST EN 1559-3:2026?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 relies on several companion standards for ordering, welding and testing:
- EN 1559-1 - the general delivery conditions that this part complements
- EN 1560 - the designation system for cast iron materials
- EN 287-6, EN ISO 15614-3 and EN 1011-8 - welder qualification, welding procedure qualification and welding recommendations for cast irons
- EN 1369, EN 1370, EN 1371-1, EN 12680-3, EN 12681-1, EN 12681-2, EN 14784-1, EN ISO 3452-1, EN ISO 5579, EN ISO 9934-1, EN ISO 16371-2 and EN ISO 16810 - the test methods, principles and test conditions used for NDT and surface assessment
- EN 1559-2, EN 1559-4, EN 1559-5 and EN 1559-6 - the other parts of the delivery-conditions series for steel, aluminium alloy, magnesium alloy and zinc alloy castings
What does the SIST EN 1559-3:2026 document contain?
SIST EN 1559-3:2026 contains the ordering rules, welding conditions, inspection framework and acceptance guidance needed to specify iron castings clearly. It also includes a table of NDT methods and annex tables that help users set acceptance criteria for discontinuities, surface roughness and visual irregularities.
Annex A is used when defining acceptance criteria for inner and outer discontinuities, including the way discontinuity classes are grouped. Annex B is used for visual surface checking and for linking surface roughness or irregularity levels to the moulding process and the surface area concerned. Annex C is a change summary for users who need to compare the document with the earlier edition.

Introduction
CEN/TC 190 “Foundry Technology” has prepared a series of material standards covering the following
cast irons:
— grey cast irons [1];
— malleable cast irons [2];
— spheroidal graphite cast irons [3];
— ausferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons [4];
— abrasion resistant cast irons [5];
— austenitic cast irons [7];
— compacted (vermicular) graphite cast irons [8];
— low alloyed ferritic spheroidal graphite cast irons for elevated temperature applications [9].
In order to assist manufacturers and purchasers to prepare proper contractual arrangements and
prevent misunderstanding, CEN/TC 190 approved the preparation of a series of standards covering
technical delivery conditions. These have been prepared as separate parts.
This document covers the additional technical delivery conditions for all the cast iron materials, e.g.
optional information, manufacturing process, welding operation, additional requirements regarding the
condition of the casting, test methods.
This document cannot be used alone for compiling a specification for ordering and supplying iron
castings, but as a complement to EN 1559-1.
1 Scope
This document specifies the additional technical delivery conditions for castings made from all cast iron
materials.
This document applies to iron castings produced in sand or permanent moulds or by centrifugal casting,
continuous casting or investment casting.
