This document specifies requirements for the preparation, revision and presentation of digital product definition data, hereafter referred to as data sets, complementing existing standards. It supports two methods of application: 3D model-only and 3D model with 2D drawing in digital format. The structure of this document presents requirements common to both methods followed by clauses providing for any essential, differing requirements for each method. Additionally, its use in conjunction with computer-aided design (CAD) systems can assist in the progression towards improved modelling and annotation practices for CAD and engineering disciplines, as well as serving as a guideline for CAx software developers. The actual definitions for the interpretation, in particular the ISO TPD and ISO GPS rules, are taken from the original definition standards, e.g. ISO 129-1 and ISO 1101. When the term model is used in this document it applies to both design models and annotated models.

IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019 is jointly developed and published by IEC, IEEE, and ISO and provides general principles and detailed requirements for the design and formulation of all types of instructions for use that will be necessary or helpful for users of products of all kinds, ranging from a tin of paint to large or highly complex products, such as large industrial machinery, turnkey based plants or buildings. IEC/IEEE 82079-1:2019 cancels and replaces the first edition IEC 82079-1:2012. This edition constitutes a technical revision. It includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) The structure of this document has been rearranged in order to facilitate application of the standard and to make it easier to find information. Where possible, the language has been simplified. b) Information for use is introduced as a generic term. Instructions for use is a synonym for information for use. Step-by-step instructions is used as a subset of information for use. c) Clause 5 (principles) is revised and focuses on the purpose of information for use, the quality of information and the process for management of information. d) The process for preparation of information for use is integrated in the normative part and addressed comprehensively. e) Empirical methods for the evaluation of information for use are described in the normative part. f) The professional competencies needed for the preparation of information for use are addressed more comprehensively. g) Some aspects have been added to general requirements for information for use for complex systems of systems. h) Consideration is given to instructions for self-assembly products. i) An informative annex providing guidance on the fulfilment of specified requirements is introduced. This horizontal standard is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 108. One of the responsibilities of a technical committee is, wherever applicable, to make use of horizontal standards in the preparation of its publications. The contents of this horizontal standard will not apply unless specifically referred to or included in the relevant publications.

ISO 129-1:2018 establishes the general principles for presentation of dimensions and associated tolerances that apply to 2D technical drawings in all disciplines and trades but which can also be applied to 3D applications. ISO 129-1:2018 does not cover the application of dimensional tolerances and their meaning. See ISO 14405‑1 for tolerancing principles. This document can only be used to describe the nominal model of a drawing, not the non-ideal surface model (skin model) used for tolerancing purposes (for more information on tolerancing specifications, see the list of GPS standards listed as normative reference or as bibliography) Considering the ISO 14405 series, the presentation of tolerance indication is unambiguous when it is applied to a dimension which is a size and ambiguous when the dimension is not a size. All rules presented in this document are available for any type of drawing (see ISO 29845). In addition, this document introduces the concept of property indicators, developed length, between, surface indicators, flag notes and textual instructions. NOTE 1 All figures are shown in 2D views only. NOTE 2 Additional information and details for construction engineering are given in ISO 6284.
