This document lays down rules for the representation of modular sizes, lines and grids on construction drawings. The basic module M is 100 mm (see ISO 1006). Generally, modular sizes are for use on design drawings, but can also be added to production drawings for manufacturing, orientation and location.

ISO 13567-1:2017 establishes the general principles of layer structuring within CAD files. Layers are used to control visibility and to manage and communicate CAD file data. Layer names are used to represent this structure. The principles are applicable to all parties involved in preparing and using technical documentation on computer systems. Although these principles are primarily for users, CAD system developers are expected to provide software tools capable of implementing and supporting ISO 13567-1:2017. An important use is also to structure data in component libraries produced by third parties.

ISO/TR 16310:2014 intends to specify the requirements and needs for supplying and managing standardized symbolic descriptions of objects that need to be specified in the construction process. Within this context, the term "symbol" is interpreted to cover pure symbolic presentation as well as simplified representation of geometrical shapes of objects.

ISO 82045-5:2005 specifies metadata elements and methods for sharing and exchanging management data (metadata) for documents, to be used with electronic or paper-based document management systems. The document concept, which includes CAD files and all other information entities that need to be managed, is defined in IEC 82045-1. The specific application domain for ISO 82045-5:2005 is the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) and FM (facility management) sectors.

The major differences between the manual drawing practice and the CAD technique are identified, and an attempt is made to rationalize the use of the CAD technique in the construction industry. The layout of a drawing system using this technique is outlined in figure 1. Limitations of the manual and automated computer-aided systems are indicated as well as their similarities, differences and correlation. A glossary of terms is included.

The representations are primarily intended for use on plans and diagrams at a scale 1 : 50. For smaller scale drawings more simplified and for larger scale drawings more detailed representations may be used. For diagrams the representation in column "Elevation" will normally be apparopriate. For making the drawing clearer the views may be combined with symbols and/or abbreviated component references, which are explained in the drawing or elsewhere.
