This standard specifies requirements and associated test methods for rubber materials used in gas installations, gas equipment and gas appliances in contact with 1st, 2nd and 3rd family combustible gases as classified in EN 437 e.g. natural gas, LPG, bio methane bio LPG. It also establishes a classification based on temperature range and hardness. This standard is applicable to materials from which are manufactured homogeneous seals and homogeneous or reinforced diaphragms.
Since the dimensions and shape of the components differ from those of standard test pieces taken from sheet material as used for type testing of the rubber materials according to this standard, tolerances have been made in the requirements specified by Annex A for the components with respect to those specified for standard test pieces.
The range of operating temperatures covered by this standard is - 40 °C to + 150 °C.
This standard is not applicable for silicone rubber used either above 200 hPa (200 mbar) nominal pressure or at temperatures below 0 °C with 3rd family gases, as there is the possibility of condensation.

d) where the maximum operating pressure in the water circuit does not exceed 6 bar;
e) which may or may not give rise to condensation under certain circumstances;
f) which are declared in the installation instructions to be either a “condensing” boiler or a "low temperature boiler" or a “standard boiler”; if no declaration is given the boiler is to be considered a “standard boiler”;
g) which are intended to be installed either indoors or outdoors in a partially protected place;
h) which may include the facility to produce hot water, either by the instantaneous or storage principle, the whole being marketed as a single unit;

The above appliances can have one or more primary or secondary functions (i.e. heat recovery - see definitions in prEN 12309 1:2012). In the case of packaged units (consisting of several parts), the standard applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package.
The appliances having their condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of external additional water are not covered by this European Standard.
Installations used for heating and/or cooling of industrial processes are not within the scope of these standards.
NOTE   All the symbols given in this text are used regardless of the language used.
1.2   Scope of this Part 2 to EN 12309
This part of EN 12309 deals with the safety of gas-driven sorption heat pumps as defined in prEN 12309 1. Only types B12 for outdoor installations, B13 for outdoor installations, B22 for outdoor installations, B23 for outdoor installations, C12 and C13, C32 and C33 are covered in this European Standard.

maximum allowable pressure exceeds 50 bar litres, further requirements may be necessary to comply with the essential
requirements of Directive 97/23/EC (Pressure Equipment Directive (PED)).
NOTE 2 For mCHP appliances with constructions that might not be fully covered by this European Standard or by another specific
standard, the risk associated with the alternative construction will be assessed.
NOTE 3 prEN 13203-4 will specify the assessment of energy consumption for domestic hot water production of gas combined
heat and power appliances (mCHP).
This European Standard does not contain the requirements necessary for appliance capable of producing
electrical energy without using the thermal energy.
This European Standard does not cover all the requirements for mCHP appliances that are intended to be
connected to gas grids where the quality of the distributed gas is likely to vary to a large extent over the
lifetime of the appliance (see Annex DD).

-  gas-fired sorption chiller;
-  gas-fired sorption chiller/heater;
-  gas-fired sorption heat pump;
EN 12309 applies to appliances only when used for space heating or cooling or refrigeration with or without heat recovery. Appliances can be monovalent, bivalent or hybrid types.
EN 12309 applies to appliances having flue gas systems of type B and C (according to CEN/TR 1749) and to appliances designed for outdoor installations. EN 12309 applies to appliances that can be single ducted or double ducted.
EN 12309 only applies to appliances having
-  ntegral burners under the control of fully automatic burner control systems,
-  closed system refrigerant circuits in which the refrigerant does not come into direct contact with the water or air to be cooled or heated,
-  mechanical means to assist transportation of the combustion air and/or the flue gas.
The above appliances can have one or more primary or secondary functions (i.e. heat recovery - see definitions in prEN 12309 1:2012) and EN 12309 applies to all such functions providing that the function concerned is dependent on circulation of fluid (refrigerant and/or solution) within the absorption, adsorption or refrigerant circuit(s).
NOTE 1   Any appliance function that is not dependent on circulation of the fluid within the absorption, adsorption, or refrigerant circuit(s) should be assessed separately.
EN 12309 is applicable to appliances that are intended to be type tested. Requirements for appliances that are not type tested would need to be subject to further consideration.
In the case of packaged units (consisting of several parts), EN 12309 applies only to those designed and supplied as a complete package.
EN 12309 does not apply to air conditioners.
The appliances having their condenser cooled by air and by the evaporation of external additional water are not covered by EN 12309.
Installations used for heating and/or cooling of industrial processes are not within the scope of EN 12309.
NOTE 2   All the symbols given in this text should be used regardless of the language used.
Scope of this Part 1 to EN 12309
This part of EN 12309 specifies the terms and definitions for gas-fired sorption appliances for heating and/or cooling with a net heat input not exceeding 70 kW.

Scope of this Part 6 to EN 12309
This part of EN 12309 specifies the calculation methods of seasonal performances for gas-fired sorption appliances for heating and/or cooling with a net heat input not exceeding 70 kW.
This part of EN 12309 deals in particular with the calculation methods of reference seasonal performances in cooling and heating mode for monovalent and bivalent appliances. Moreover, this European Standard serves as an input for the calculation of the system energy efficiency in heating mode of specific heat pump systems in buildings, as stipulated in EN 15316-4-2.
