Overview

EN 12964:2001 (CEN) specifies a laboratory method to determine the heat resistance of bonds produced by lasting adhesives used in leather and footwear. The standard defines the test principle, required apparatus, conditioning, preparation of test pieces and the procedure for heating bonds until cohesive failure. The method provides repeatable results to assess adhesive performance under increasing temperature and to support quality control and product development.

Key Topics

  • Test principle: Two adhesive-coated strips of cotton canvas are overlapped and bonded. Test pieces are placed in a warm-air cabinet and heated at a controlled rate until cohesion failure occurs.
  • Test pieces: Strips up to (100 ± 2) mm long and (30 ± 0.5) mm wide, marked at 30 mm, 40 mm and 70 mm; bonded to overlap at least 70 mm.
  • Heating regime: Warm-air cabinet with forced ventilation; temperature increased at 2 °C/min. Separation temperature is recorded when the 40 mm mark appears for the specified test procedure.
  • Loads and pressure: Tests use defined clamps and weights (1–5 kg) and a bonding pressure of (0.6 ± 0.02) MPa during assembly.
  • Failure mode: Bonds shall show cohesion (cohesive) failure as defined in EN 923. If adhesive failure occurs, the test is repeated with increased adhesive thickness.

Practical Procedure (summary)

  1. Condition test material to standard atmosphere (ISO 554, e.g., 23/50).
  2. Prepare and clean bonding surfaces as instructed by the adhesive supplier (or brush-clean if unspecified).
  3. Apply adhesive (liquid or hot-melt) with a suitable applicator; allow specified drying/activation intervals (activation typically ~85 ± 5 °C for many adhesives).
  4. Assemble strips and apply uniform pressure (≈0.6 MPa) for the required time.
  5. After a 5-minute wait, insert ends into cabinet clamps and load with the chosen weight.
  6. Heat at 2 °C/min and record the temperature/time when separation reaches the marked line(s). Calculate mean values ignoring the highest and lowest results.

Apparatus highlights: cutting knife, adhesive applicator (brush, roller or hot-melt nozzle), heat activator, temperature measurement devices, pressing device, warm-air cabinet with programmable ramp and clamps, calibrated weights.

Applications

  • Quality control of lasting adhesives used in footwear and leather goods
  • Comparative evaluation of adhesive formulations under heat exposure
  • Supporting technical compliance and product development decisions

For test reporting, EN 12964 requires full identification of adhesive and test material, details of surface preparation, applicator and bonding procedure, type of test, individual and mean results, failure mode, any deviations and the test date. This ensures traceability and repeatability in heat-resistance evaluations for lasting adhesives.
