(Main)Adhesives - Examination and preparation of samples for testing
Adhesives - Examination and preparation of samples for testing
This European Standard specifies both the procedure for preliminary examination of a single sample as received for testing, and the procedure for preparing a test sample by blending and reduction of a series of samples representative of a consignment or bulk of adhesives or related product.
It is intended for use in conjunction with EN ISO 15605.

Overview
EN 1067:2005 (CEN) - "Adhesives - Examination and preparation of samples for testing" defines procedures for the preliminary examination of adhesive samples as received and for preparing representative test samples by blending and reduction of a series of samples. It is intended to be used in conjunction with EN ISO 15605 (sampling) and provides practical rules to ensure that laboratory tests on adhesives are performed on appropriate, representative material.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Condition and opening of sample containers
- Record container defects or leakage; remove external packing and open carefully to avoid disturbing contents or releasing pressure.
- Note bulging, gas/vapour pressure and record in the examination report.
- Visual examination checklist
- Ullage (air space %), surface skin (continuous, hard/soft, thickness), consistency (thixotropic vs gelled), phase separation, visible impurities, sediment, clarity, and odour.
- Mixing and homogenization
- Thorough stirring and shaking; avoid entrainment of air and ensure samples are free from air bubbles before testing.
- For settled products, procedures include pouring fluid medium off, removing settled material, re-mixing and reincorporation by transferring between containers.
- Special conditions
- Samples with gelling or hard-dry settling cannot be made homogeneous and shall not be used for testing.
- Removal of surface skin by sieving through a test sieve conforming to ISO 565 (nominal 125 µm aperture) when required.
- Product categories
- Procedures cover fluid single- or multi-phase products, fluids with solids, viscous products, powders and solid products (corresponding to types A–F in EN ISO 15605).
- Documentation
- Labelling of prepared test containers and a formal report of preliminary examination (conditions observed, actions taken).
Applications and Who Uses It
- Practical applications:
- Ensures representative and reproducible laboratory testing of adhesives and related products.
- Detects transport/storage defects (phase separation, contamination, gelling) before destructive or performance tests.
- Guides blending/reduction of samples from consignments or bulk shipments for QC.
- Typical users:
- Adhesive manufacturers and quality control laboratories
- Independent testing and certification bodies
- Incoming goods inspectors, product development and R&D labs
- Purchasers and compliance officers needing reliable test sampling procedures
