Overview
EN 1034-2:2005+A1:2009 - published by CEN - is the European safety standard for barking drums used in debarking plants for paper making. It sets safety requirements for the design and construction of barking drums (drum, drive, power transmission elements, supporting wheels and control systems) and is intended to be used together with EN 1034-1:2000+A1:2010 (common requirements). This type C standard addresses significant hazards when the machine is used as intended and under conditions foreseen by the manufacturer. It does not cover sawing equipment, log/bark conveyors, or barking drums manufactured before this standard’s publication.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & risk assessment: Requires risk assessment in accordance with EN 1050 and application of EN ISO 12100 design principles for residual hazards.
- Mechanical safeguarding: Guards and interlocks for danger points (between drum and supporting wheels, drive and foundations) per EN 953 and safety distances from EN 294. Power transmission elements must meet the requirements specified in EN 1034-1.
- Containment guards: Delivery-side guards must withstand log ejection forces (safety factor ≥ 4) - design assumes initial ejection speed = drum circumferential speed and must contain logs ejected up to 45° from the drum axis.
- Inspection and access: Inspection openings and covers must be interlocked with the drum drive to at least Category 3 of EN 954‑1; workplaces, stairs and catwalks must follow EN ISO 14122 and ergonomic principles.
- Control & warnings: A start‑up warning device (category A) is mandatory; control system safety categories follow EN 954‑1 (category 1 for conventional, category 2 for electronic). Emergency stop, isolation, energy dissipation and maintenance measures are defined.
- Other hazards: Addresses noise (see EN 13023), electrical equipment (EN 60204‑1), hydraulic/pneumatic safety, wood dust and ergonomic risks. Verification, user information and conformity with EU Machinery Directives (Annexes ZA/ZB) are included.
Applications and users
- Intended for manufacturers, designers and integrators of paper-making debarking equipment and barking drum assemblies.
- Useful to safety engineers, conformity assessors, plant managers and maintenance teams responsible for installation, guarding, inspection and safe operation in debarking plants.
- Also relevant to compliance officers preparing CE marking documentation and aligning machinery with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
