EN 1090-4 is a CEN standard for the execution of cold-formed structural steel members and profiled sheeting used in roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications. It specifies requirements for manufacture, installation, documentation, inspection and deconstruction for structures designed to the EN 1993 series, especially cold-formed members and sheeting used in building works.
What does EN 1090-4 specify?
EN 1090-4 specifies the execution of cold-formed structural steel elements and cold-formed structures, meaning the manufacture and installation rules that apply once the design has already been done. It is aimed at steel members and profiled sheeting used in roof, ceiling, floor, wall and cladding applications, including structures under predominantly static loading or seismic loading conditions.
The document applies to structures designed in accordance with the EN 1993 series, and to members and profiled sheeting designed in accordance with EN 1993-1-3 and EN 1993-1-4. It can also be used with other design rules if the execution conditions comply with them and any extra requirements are specified.
EN 1090-4 covers structural profiled sheeting of Structural Class I and II, and Structural Class III where EN 1993-1-3 allows it, as well as structural members of all structural classes. It also covers not welded built-up sections, cold-formed closed and hollow sections with longitudinal seam welding, perforated and micro profiled products, spacer constructions, structural attachments, steel profiled sheeting for composite floors during installation and concrete pouring, and deconstruction of covered structures.
It excludes composite structural members where dissimilar materials are part of the structural behaviour, such as sandwich panels and composite floors. It also leaves out detailed rules for thermal insulation, moisture protection, noise control, fire protection details, traditional plumber or tinsmith cladding work, and detailed water tightness, air permeability and thermal aspects of profiled sheeting.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Basic requirements for profiled sheeting, including support conditions, edges, building physics and roof drainage |
| Annex B | Additional design requirements for profiled sheeting, including serviceability, support widths, concrete or masonry supports, walkability, cantilevers and effective load width |
| Annex C | Installation records |
| Annex D | Geometrical tolerances |
| Annex E | Corrosion protection by metallic coating with or without organic coatings |
What are the key requirements of EN 1090-4?
EN 1090-4 sets out a practical execution framework: define the work before production starts, control the materials and products, carry out the work with the right methods, and keep records that show the structure was made and installed as specified. The main clauses run from documentation and product control through manufacturing, welding, fastening, installation, surface protection, tolerances, inspection and deconstruction.
Documentation, traceability and safety
Clause 4 requires an execution specification that covers the manufacturer and installer, layout drawings, structural classes, execution classes and geometrical tolerances. It also requires installation quality documentation, installation documentation, detailed traceability from purchase to installation, and method statements for safe installation work.
In practice, this means the work must be planned and recorded before and during site work, not only checked at the end. Annex C gives recommended items for installation records, and completion of the work is confirmed by a signed statement of completion.
Materials, identification and product evidence
Clause 5 requires materials suited to cold forming and documented in a way that lets their properties be compared with the specified requirements. For steel products covered by the listed material standards, the inspection document is 3.1 according to EN 10204.
Clause 5 also requires product identification, packaging and traceability information, including manufacturer identification and the corrosion protection system. For profiled sheeting, the standard points to defined material grades and coating systems, and it requires the execution and installation specification to state thickness tolerances where needed.
Manufacture, welding and fastening
Clause 6 requires cold forming by roll forming or press braking, with no hammering and no visible cracks at bent areas. Stainless steel processing needs cleaning of equipment if other steels are also formed on the same equipment, unless another method is demonstrated by testing.
Clause 7 permits welding only under controlled conditions. For the longitudinal seam of custom cold-formed closed and hollow sections, the welding procedure specification is based on EN ISO 15613, with initial inspection and production testing. Site welding on organic coated structural members and profiled sheeting is not permitted.
Clause 8 covers screws, blind rivets and cartridge fired pins for shop and site fastening. It requires the installer to follow the installation specification and the fastener manufacturer’s instructions, and it calls for procedure testing where needed to show that the fastening can actually be achieved under site conditions. The clause also requires removal of drilling swarf and broken mandrels after installation to limit later corrosion.
Installation, inspection and deconstruction
Clause 9 requires safe site conditions, trained installation personnel, checked preceding works, available layout drawings, proper tools and protective measures before work starts. It also covers storage, unloading, lifting, laying, direction of lay, cover width, removal of protective film, and inspection after installation.
Clause 12 requires inspection and testing against a predetermined plan with documented procedures, including checks on manufactured dimensions, the installed structure, and fastening. Non-conforming products and damaged items can only be used if sufficient load-bearing capacity, serviceability and durability are verified.
Clause 13 covers deconstruction of lightweight metal constructions made of profiled sheeting, and says the site safety approach from Clause 9 also applies. The deconstruction process must be planned, controlled and documented, with attention to access, fall protection, sequence of removal and debris handling.
Tolerances and corrosion protection
Clause 11 defines essential tolerances and functional tolerances. Essential tolerances support mechanical resistance and stability, while functional tolerances cover fit-up and appearance. Annex D gives the tabulated manufacturing tolerances for profiled sheeting, members and punched holes.
Clause 10 and Annex E cover corrosion protection, including coating selection, suitability verification and cleaning or maintenance. Annex E uses corrosivity categories and test methods to check metallic and organic coating systems, so the protective system has to match the intended environment.
Fire and lightning-related requirements
Clause 5 links external fire performance for profiled sheeting used as an outer roof layer to CEN/TS 1187 and EN 13501-5. Reaction to fire, resistance to fire and release of dangerous substances are handled through EN 1090-1. Where the metal parts form part of the lightning protection system, EN 62305-3 and EN 62561-1 apply.
What terms does EN 1090-4 define?
- Component I - the part of a connection that faces the head of the fastener, usually the profiled sheeting.
- Component II - the second part of a connection, usually the supporting member.
- Decking - load-bearing profiled sheeting that supports items such as insulation and outer skin.
- Liner tray - a profiled sheet with a large lipped edge stiffener that can interlock with adjacent trays to form a ribbed plane capable of supporting another profiled layer.
- Member - a linear profiled cross section, where the cross-sectional dimensions are much smaller than the length.
- Restraint - limitation of lateral, rotational, torsional or warping movement that increases buckling resistance.
- Structural cold-formed component - a load-bearing element made from steel sheet by cold rolling or press braking.
- Essential tolerance - a geometrical limit needed to satisfy the design assumptions for mechanical resistance and stability.
Who uses EN 1090-4?
EN 1090-4 is used by manufacturers of cold-formed steel members and profiled sheeting, installers and site contractors, and quality managers who need to control execution and traceability. It is also used by designers, specifiers, inspectors and technical buyers working on roof, wall, ceiling and floor systems built from cold-formed steel.
The document is relevant to structural steelwork, building envelope systems, composite floor decking during installation, and deconstruction work. It is particularly useful where fastening, corrosion protection, tolerances, site safety and documentation all have to be controlled together.
What changed in EN 1090-4 from the previous edition?
EN 1090-4 replaces EN 1090-4:2018. The foreword states that the new edition is a fundamental revision of the standard and an adaptation to the current state of science and technology.

1 Scope
This document specifies requirements for the execution, i.e. the manufacture and the installation, of cold-
formed structural steel members and profiled sheeting and cold-formed structures for roof, ceiling, floor,
wall and cladding applications.
This document applies to structures designed according to the EN 1993 series.
This document applies to structural members and profiled sheeting designed according to EN 1993-1-3.
This document can be used for structures designed according to other design rules provided that
conditions for execution comply with them and any necessary additional requirements are specified.
This document also specifies requirements for the execution i.e. the manufacture and the installation of
structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications under
predominately static loading or seismic loading conditions and their documentation.
This document covers structural profiled sheeting of Structural Class I and II and structural profiled
sheeting in Structural Class III according to EN 1993-1-3 used in structures.
NOTE 1 In National Annexes of EN 1993-1-3 specifications can be given regarding the use of the Structural
Classes.
This document covers structural members of all structural classes according to EN 1993-1-3.
Structural profiled sheeting is understood here to be:
— profiled sheet, such as trapezoidal, sinusoidal or liner trays (Figure 1).
Structural members are understood here to be:
— members (linear profiled cross sections) that are produced by cold forming (Figure 2).
This document also covers:
— not welded built-up sections (Figure 2d);
— cold-formed closed and hollow sections including the welding of the longitudinal seam (Figure 2b and
Figure 2c), not covered by EN 10219-1;
— perforated, punctured and micro profiled sheeting and members;
The welding of built-up sections are not covered. The welding provisions are given in EN 1090-2.
This document also covers spacer constructions between the outer and inner or upper and lower skins
for roofs, walls and ceilings made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and the connections and
attachments of the afore mentioned elements as long as all has a structural purpose.
This document covers steel profiled sheeting for composite floors, e.g. during installation and in stage of
pouring concrete.
This document also covers the deconstruction of structures made from cold-formed profiled sheeting and
structural members for roof, ceiling, floor and wall applications.
Composite structural members where the interaction between dissimilar materials are an integral part
of the structural behaviour such as sandwich panels and composite floors are not covered by this
document.
This document does not cover the necessary analyses and detailing and execution rules for thermal
insulation, moisture protection, noise control and fire protection.
oSIST prEN 1090-4:2025
prEN 1090-4:2025 (E)
This document does not cover regulations of roof cladding and wall cladding, produced by traditional
plumber methods or tinsmith methods.
This document does not cover detailed requirements for water tightness or air permeability resistance
and thermal aspects of profiled sheeting.
NOTE 2 The structures covered in this document can be for example.
— single- or multi-skin roofs, whereby the load-bearing structure (lower skin) or the actual roof covering (upper
skin) or both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting;
— single- or multi-skin walls whereby the load-bearing structure (inner skin), the actual cladding (outer skin) or
both consist of cold-formed structural members and profiled sheeting, or
— trusses from cold-formed members.
NOTE 3 Structures can consist of an assembly of structural members and profiled sheeting made of steel
according to EN 1090-4 and of aluminium according to EN 1090-5.
