SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 is the SIST adoption of EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026, the European amendment to ISO 10087 on small craft craft identification. It updates the coding system for the craft identification number, including the character layout, the manufacturer’s identification code, the serial number, and the correction of identification errors. The document is intended for small craft manufacturers, national authorities, and organizations that assign, mark, check, or correct craft identity codes.

What does SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 specify?

SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 specifies amendments to the coding system used for small craft identification. In practice, it refines how a craft identification number is built and how errors in an affixed identification number are handled.

The document is organized around amendments to clause 4, a new requirement in clause 5.2, and Annex ZA.

AnnexWhat it covers
ZA (informative)Relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU aimed to be covered

What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?

SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 updates the identification code format and the correction rule for craft identification markings. The main effect is to make the identification string more precise and to require correction of both visible and hidden identification marks when an error is found.

Craft identification number format

Clause 4.1 replaces the format rule for the craft identification number. The craft identification number shall be a unique combination of 14 consecutive characters plus a hyphen, with no intervening spaces, slashes, or dashes. For users, this means the code has to be entered and marked exactly as specified, without extra separators that could break consistency.

Manufacturer’s identification code

Clause 4.3 replaces the rule for the next three characters. These characters are the manufacturer’s identification code, and a national authority assigns them either to the manufacturer or to a recognized organization. The code may use numerals and/or letters, except numerals 0 and 1, so organizations need to control character selection carefully when creating or validating a code.

Serial number portion

Clause 4.4 replaces the rule for the following five characters. These characters are the serial number for each individual craft, and the serial number may use numerals and/or letters except the letters I, O, and Q. In practice, this reduces confusion with similar-looking characters when a craft is identified, recorded, or traced.

Correction of identification errors

Clause 5.2.2 adds a correction rule for mistakes in the affixed craft identification number. If a mistake requires correction, the craft manufacturer shall correct both the visible and hidden identification number. For manufacturers, this means an error is not fixed only on the label or visible marking - both identification locations must be aligned.

EU relationship and compliance context

Annex ZA links the amendment to Directive 2013/53/EU, specifically the watercraft identification essential requirement. The annex states that the standard provides one voluntary means of conformity, and it maps the relevant clauses to the directive for use in the European regulatory context. For compliance teams, Annex ZA is the place to check how the standard is used when proving conformity under the directive.

What terms does SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 define?

  • Craft identification number - the full identification string for a craft, built from the prescribed sequence of characters.
  • Manufacturer’s identification code - the three-character code assigned by a national authority to the manufacturer or a recognized organization.
  • Recognized organization - an organization authorized by a national authority to receive an assigned manufacturer code.
  • Serial number - the five-character portion that identifies an individual craft within the coding system.
  • Visible identification number - the externally affixed identification marking that must be corrected when an error is found.
  • Hidden identification number - the internal or concealed identification marking that must be corrected together with the visible one.
  • Unique identification code - the term used in Annex ZA for the code linked to compliance with Directive 2013/53/EU.

Who uses SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?

SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 is used by small craft manufacturers, especially teams responsible for marking, serializing, and correcting craft identity codes. National authorities use it when assigning manufacturer identification codes. Recognized organizations use it when they are authorized to work under the national authority’s system.

It is also relevant to compliance, certification, and market surveillance teams that need to verify whether a craft identification number follows the prescribed structure and whether it supports the EU conformity link described in Annex ZA. Buyers and quality managers can use it to check whether a supplier’s identification marking process is controlled and traceable.

What changed in SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 from the previous edition?

SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 modifies EN ISO 10087:2022 by replacing clause 4.1, clause 4.3, and clause 4.4, and by adding a new paragraph 5.2.2.

The stated changes are:

  • clause 4.1 now sets the craft identification number as 14 consecutive characters plus a hyphen, with no intervening spaces, slashes, or dashes
  • clause 4.3 now identifies the next three characters as the manufacturer’s identification code and sets who assigns it
  • clause 4.4 now identifies the following five characters as the serial number and limits certain letters
  • clause 5.2.2 now requires correction of both the visible and hidden identification number when an error in the affixed code must be corrected

Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?

The normative standard named in Annex ZA is ISO 3166-1:2020, published in Europe as EN ISO 3166-1:2020. It provides the country code system used where country identification is needed in the European conformity context.

What does the SIST EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 document contain?

The document contains replacement text for clauses 4.1, 4.3, and 4.4, plus a new paragraph 5.2.2 in clause 5.2. It also includes the European foreword and Annex ZA. Annex ZA contains two tables: one mapping the standard to Directive 2013/53/EU and one listing the normative reference to ISO 3166-1:2020 and its European publication.

The amendment text includes the coding rules themselves, an example reference in clause 4.1, and the correction rule in clause 5.2.2. Annex ZA is the part used when the standard is applied in the EU regulatory setting, especially for watercraft identification and presumption of conformity.
