EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 is a CEN European amendment to the small craft identification coding system standard. It updates the rules for the craft identification number, the manufacturer’s identification code, the serial number, and the correction of an affixed identification number. It is aimed at small craft manufacturers, national authorities, and organizations that assign or check craft identification codes.
What does EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 specify?
EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 specifies amendments to EN ISO 10087:2022 for identifying small craft with a coded craft identification number. The technical changes focus on the structure of the identifier, the assignment of the manufacturer code, the make-up of the serial number, and how to correct a mistaken affixed identification number.
The document is organized as a European amendment with a European foreword and informative Annex ZA. The amendment text itself changes clauses 4.1, 4.3 and 4.4, renumbers the existing paragraph in 5.2, and adds a new paragraph 5.2.2.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex ZA | Relationship between this European Standard and the essential requirements of Directive 2013/53/EU |
What are the key requirements of EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?
EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 tightens the way a craft identification number is formed and how errors are corrected. In practice, this matters because the identifier must be readable, consistent, and traceable across manufacturing and regulatory checks.
Craft identification number format
Clause 4.1 replaces the format rule with a requirement for a unique combination of 14 consecutive characters plus a hyphen, with no intervening spaces, slashes or dashes. For users, this means the identifier has a fixed structure that leaves less room for local variation or ambiguous marking.
Manufacturer’s identification code
Clause 4.3 states that the next three characters are the manufacturer’s identification code. EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 says this code is assigned by a national authority either to the manufacturer or to a recognized organization, and the characters may be numerals and/or letters except 0 and 1. In practice, manufacturers need an assigned code before they can build valid craft identification numbers.
Serial number rules
Clause 4.4 sets the following five characters as the serial number for each individual craft. The serial number may use numerals and/or letters, but not the letters I, O and Q. This helps avoid confusion when the number is read, typed, or inspected on the craft.
Correction of a mistaken affixed identification number
The new paragraph 5.2.2 requires the craft manufacturer to correct both the visible and hidden identification number if a mistake in the affixed craft identification number has to be corrected. This is important for traceability, because both the marking on the craft and the concealed record must match.
Link to EU product requirements
Annex ZA connects this European Standard with Directive 2013/53/EU for watercraft identification. It states that compliance with the normative clauses listed there can support presumption of conformity within the scope of the standard, together with the referenced edition of ISO 3166-1:2020 / EN ISO 3166-1:2020.
What terms does EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 define?
- Craft identification number - The unique identifier for a craft, made up of 14 consecutive characters plus a hyphen.
- Manufacturer’s identification code - The three-character code assigned by a national authority to a manufacturer or a recognized organization.
- Serial number - The five-character part of the identifier that distinguishes one craft from another.
- Recognized organization - An organization authorized by a national authority.
- Unique identification code - The term used in Annex ZA in relation to compliance with Directive 2013/53/EU.
- ISO 3166-1:2020 - The country-code standard referenced for the legal conformity mapping in Annex ZA.
Who uses EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?
EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 is used by small craft manufacturers that assign and mark craft identification numbers. It is also used by national authorities and recognized organizations that allocate manufacturer codes and check whether an identification mark is valid.
It matters for compliance teams, certification bodies, and buyers in the recreational craft sector who need to verify that a craft can be identified consistently and linked back to the manufacturer. The amendment is also relevant where conformity with Directive 2013/53/EU is being assessed.
What changed in EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 from the previous edition?
EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 modifies EN ISO 10087:2022 by:
- replacing clause 4.1 with a new format for the craft identification number
- replacing clause 4.3 with revised rules for the manufacturer’s identification code
- replacing clause 4.4 with revised rules for the serial number
- renumbering the existing paragraph in 5.2 as 5.2.1
- adding 5.2.2 on correcting both visible and hidden identification numbers when an affixed number is wrong
Which standards are used with EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026?
- EN ISO 10087:2022 - the base European Standard that this amendment modifies.
- ISO 3166-1:2020 / EN ISO 3166-1:2020 - provides the country codes referenced in Annex ZA for the conformity relationship to Directive 2013/53/EU.
What does the EN ISO 10087:2022/A1:2026 document contain?
The document contains the European foreword, the amendment instructions for clauses 4 and 5.2, and Annex ZA on the relationship with Directive 2013/53/EU. It also includes Table ZA.1, which maps the standard to the directive’s watercraft identification requirement, and Table ZA.2, which lists the normative reference to ISO 3166-1:2020 / EN ISO 3166-1:2020.
For implementation work, the most useful parts are the revised numbering and character rules for the identifier, the correction rule for mis-marked craft, and the conformity note in Annex ZA. These are the parts that affect marking, checking, and documentation in practice.
