Overview
EN 60118-12:1996 (adopted by CLC) is an international standard that defines the dimensions and tolerances of electrical connector systems for hearing aids. Its primary objective is to ensure mechanical and electrical interchangeability of plugs and sockets used with hearing instruments, earphones and associated accessories. The document includes drawings, tables of nominal dimensions and tolerances, and informative guidance on recommended connector use.
Key topics
- Scope and purpose: Applies to plugs and connector systems for hearing aids, specifying essential dimensions and tolerance limits to guarantee compatibility between manufacturers.
- Connector families: Defines both rectangular and circular connector systems, including:
- Two-terminal polarized plugs (earphones)
- Three-terminal (polarized and unpolarized) plugs and sockets
- Four-terminal and five-terminal circular plugs and sockets
- Dimensional data: Detailed tables and figures provide nominal sizes, minimum/maximum limits, radii/diameters and positional tolerances required for manufacturing and inspection.
- Mechanical features: Polarization options, pin lengths (note: longer pin No. 1 recommended as ground for circular connectors), and terminal shapes (e.g., hollow cylinder terminals) are specified to ensure reliable mating.
- Interchangeability focus: Emphasis on tolerances and datum references so different products can interconnect safely and predictably.
Practical applications and who uses it
EN 60118-12 is essential for anyone designing, producing, testing or procuring hearing-aid hardware and related accessories:
- Hearing-aid manufacturers ensure that their devices accept standard plugs and accessories from other suppliers.
- Connector and component suppliers use the dimensional specifications to manufacture compatible plugs, sockets and cable assemblies.
- Test laboratories and quality engineers reference the tolerances for acceptance testing and conformity assessment.
- Repair and service technicians rely on standardized connectors for replacement parts and accessory compatibility.
- Regulatory and procurement teams use the standard to specify interoperability requirements in tenders, product specs and certification criteria.
Related standards
- EN 60118 series (IEC 60118) - other parts address acoustic and electrical characteristics of hearing aids.
- IEC 118‑6 (IEC 60118‑6) - referenced for electrical input circuit characteristics related to three‑terminal connectors (informative in Annex A).
By standardizing plug-and-socket dimensions, EN 60118-12:1996 reduces compatibility issues, simplifies accessory interchange, and supports a robust supply chain for hearing-aid components and services. Keywords: EN 60118-12:1996, hearing aids, electrical connector systems, connector dimensions, interchangeability, plugs and sockets.

The object of the IEC is topromote international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronicfields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Theirpreparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealtwith may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizationsliaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the InternationalOrganization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between thetwo organizations.2)The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, aninternational consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representationfrom all interested National Committees.3)The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in theform of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in thatsense.4)In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC InternationalStandards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards.
