TC 72 - Automatic electrical controls
To prepare standards related to the inherent and functional safety of the product and to the operating characteristics where such are associated with application safety. The scope covers the evaluation of automatic electrical control devices used in homes, buildings, appliances and other apparatus, electrical and non-electrical. The scope also covers products for industrial purposes when no dedicated product standards exist, such as that for central heating, air conditioning, process heating building automation, etc. Additionally, the following products are also included under the scope: 1. Automatic electrical control devices, mechanically, electromechanically, electrically or electronically operated. These devices are responsive to or controlling parameters such as temperature, pressure, chemical, passage of time, humidity, light, electrostatic effect, flow or liquid level. 2. Automatic electrical control devices serving the starting of small motors that are used principally in appliances and apparatus for household and similar purposes. Such control devices may be built into, or are separate from, the motor. 3. Non-automatic control devices when such are associated with automatic control devices. 4. Automatic electrical controls used in application functions such as building automation for comfort living, energy management, photo-voltaic applications, battery management systems, alternate fuel applications, etc. Energy efficiency of the overall installation is not included within the scope. This is covered under the scope of TC23/SC23K. 5. Automatic electrical controls that use cloud-based technology to perform control functions. 6. Automatic electrical control devices that may be part of the gas train/path for alternate fuels such as hydrogen. 7. Sensors and sensing technology used on or in association with automatic electrical controls.

IEC 60730-2-22:2014 applies to the partial evaluation of thermal motor protectors as defined in IEC 60730-1 for household and similar use, including heating, air conditioning and similar applications as well as for sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors. A thermal motor protector is considered an integrated control since its protective functionality is dependent on the correct mounting and fixing in or on a motor and which can only be fully tested in combination with the relevant motor. This dependency is illustrated by:
- the ability of the thermal motor protector to accurately and reliably sense the heat of the motor windings;
- thus, addressing the over-temperature protection due to motor overload conditions;
- the ability of the thermal motor protector to accurately and reliably sense the current due to motor locked-rotor conditions;
- thus, reducing the response time and not being adversely affected by heat-sink at the assembly spot in the application and the influence of the motor's electromagnetic field on the switch behaviour of the thermal motor protector;
- particularly, affecting the arc direction between the contacts resulting in uneven wear of the contact material and eventually leading to failure of operation. Requirements concerning the testing of the combination of sealed (hermetic and semi-hermetic type) motor-compressors and thermal motor protectors are given in IEC 60335-2-34. This standard applies to thermal motor protectors using NTC or PTC thermistors, additional requirements for which are contained in Annex J. Key words: Thermal, Motor protectors, Integrated control

This edition of IEC 60730-2-9 contains a new Annex EE, which is an informative guide to the application of temperature sensing controls. Additionally, a new requirement to 17.3.1 (there is an error in the FDIS document - 17.7.3 should be 17.3.1) was added to address the endurance requirement for temperature sensing devices where the whole control is declared as the sensing element for ambient temperatures below 0 °C.
