Overview
IEC 60730-2-9:2000/AMD2:2004 is an important amendment to the international standard concerning automatic electrical controls for household and similar use, specifically focusing on temperature sensing controls. This amendment introduces additional requirements and testing procedures, particularly addressing the use of such controls in agricultural confinement buildings where exposure to aggressive chemical compounds and harsh environmental conditions is common. Developed by IEC Technical Committee 72, this standard ensures that temperature controls used in these environments maintain reliability, safety, and operational integrity under adverse agricultural conditions.
Key Topics
Scope and Context: This amendment supplements the base IEC 60730-2-9:2000 standard and its first amendment (2002) by incorporating provisions tailored for temperature sensing controls employed in agricultural settings.
Agricultural Thermostat Definition: The standard defines an agricultural thermostat as a device specifically designed for use in farm buildings known as agricultural confinement buildings-structures that are artificially heated or cooled with potential accumulations of corrosive compounds from animal waste and feed.
New Annex DD: A normative annex focusing on controls intended for use in agricultural confinement buildings has been introduced. This annex provides a comprehensive methodology for testing the ability of temperature sensing controls to withstand the aggressive chemical environments typical in such buildings.
Test Conditions and Procedures: Annex DD describes detailed test environments simulating exposure to chemical mixtures such as:
- Moist air combined with sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide
- Moist air with hydrogen sulfide
- Moist ammonia vapors
- Urea-water vapor mixtures
- High humidity and elevated temperatures
Chemical Exposure Test Duration: The amendment includes exposure protocols lasting from 10 to 30 days to assess device durability under continuous chemical exposure.
Additional Testing for Dust and Heat Generation:
- Dust penetration tests according to IEC 60529 with dust penetration level 5 are specified.
- For controls with heat-producing components (e.g., transformers, relays), additional dust exposure tests assess abnormal heating risks due to accumulated agricultural dust, such as wheat or corn dust.
Mounting and Construction Requirements: The amendment details construction specifications for agricultural thermostats, ensuring that device enclosures maintain protection integrity during installation and operation in aggressive farm environments.
Applications
Agricultural Buildings: This standard is critical for manufacturers and users of temperature sensing electrical controls in farm environments, including barns, poultry houses, and other confinement structures.
Household and Similar Uses: While focused on agricultural environments, the amendment complements controls designed for broader household and similar applications by adding rigorous durability and safety requirements specific to chemical exposures encountered in agricultural contexts.
Control System Manufacturers: Provides detailed guidance for designing and certifying temperature sensing controls that meet international quality and safety requirements, supporting market access and compliance.
Certification Bodies and Testing Laboratories: Serves as a benchmark for conducting conformity assessments and environmental testing for temperature sensing controls used in agricultural conditions.
Related Standards
IEC 60730 Series: The base series for automatic electrical controls for household and similar applications, with Part 2-9 covering particular requirements for temperature sensing controls.
IEC 60529: Addresses degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code), referenced here for dust penetration testing.
IEC TC 31 Standards: Concerning equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres, which this amendment explicitly excludes for agricultural thermostats to clarify the scope.
IEC 60730-2-9 Amendment 1 (2002): The previous amendment upon which AMD2 builds, enhancing the requirements related to automatic temperature sensing controls.
Summary
IEC 60730-2-9:2000/AMD2:2004 Amendment 2 enhances the robustness and reliability of automatic temperature sensing controls used in agricultural confinement buildings by defining additional testing methods and environmental exposures. The comprehensive Annex DD provides a standardized approach to verify the resistance of temperature controls to corrosive chemicals and dust prevalent in these environments. This amendment is essential for manufacturers, testing organizations, and end-users seeking to ensure device safety, longevity, and functional performance under challenging agricultural conditions. Adhering to this amendment helps protect agricultural environments and ensures the consistent operation of temperature controls critical for farm management and safety.

(normative)
Controls for use in agricultural confinement buildings
DD.1 Object
The object of this annex is to provide a standard test method for determining the ability of a
temperature sensing control to withstand specified severities of chemical compounds
associated with use in agricultural confinement building environments. The requirements of this
annex are intended to be in addition to the requirements of this standard. Twelve new samples,
unless the test of DD.7.7.2 is required, in which case 13, are used for the tests of this annex.
Controls declared and intended for use in agricultural confinement buildings are not intended
for use in potentially explosive atmospheres within the scope of IEC TC 31.
DD.2 Definitions
DD.2.1
agricultural confinement building
farm structure characterised by being heated and/or cooled by artificial means, where
accumulation of animal food and waste may result in concentrations of corrosive compounds
not normally found in freely ventilated farm buildings (e.g. barns) and periodically disinfected
prior to subsequent similar use
DD.3 Test apparatus
Test chambers and sample shelves are of materials known to withstand the corrosive effects of
the test medium so as not to introduce additional byproducts of corrosion.
DD.4 Severities
Severities are specified in Clause DD.7.
DD.5 Pre-conditioning
This annex does not prescribe any requirement for pre-conditioning. However, controls
provided with openings for the entrance of wiring, fittings and/or cords of the type intended
