EN 4500-006 is a CEN aerospace standard in the EN 4500 series on metallic materials. It specifies the specific rules for drafting and presenting material standards for filler metals for brazing, so that aerospace material standards use a common structure and common wording. The document is aimed at the people who write, review, or use those material standards in practice.
What does EN 4500-006 specify?
EN 4500-006 specifies the rules for drafting and presentation of metallic material standards for aerospace applications, with a specific focus on filler metals for brazing. In practical terms, it is a writing and structuring standard: it tells standards writers what to include in the title, scope, references, table of requirements, and bibliography.
The document is organised into four clauses and five informative annexes.
| Annex | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Annex A | Completion of the title page |
| Annex B | Completion of the introduction |
| Annex C | Completion of the scope, normative references, terms and definitions, and requirements |
| Annex D | Completion of Table 1 |
| Annex E | Completion of the bibliography |
Clause 1 gives the scope, clause 2 lists the normative references, clause 3 gives the applicable terms and definitions, and clause 4 sets out the drafting rules and the structure of Table 1. That structure matters because the standard is mainly about how aerospace material standards shall be written and presented.
What are the key requirements of EN 4500-006?
EN 4500-006 gives the rules that a material standard for filler metals for brazing shall follow. The main practical point is that the document standardises the content and order of the information, so users can compare standards and find the same data in the same place.
Draft the title and product description consistently
Clause 4.2 says the title shall follow the EN 4500-001 approach and may include the method of melting. It also lists permitted form descriptions such as amorphous foil, borided foil, rolled foil, powder, paste, tape, and wire, with qualifying terms where allowed. For a writer, this means the title and product form need to use the standard’s wording rather than local or informal wording.
When the material has an ECISS designation, Annex A shows that the designation is added in brackets after the material designation for information. In practice, this helps readers connect the aerospace designation with the industry designation used elsewhere.
Use the prescribed ordering for composition and melting
Clause 4.5.2 requires chemical composition to be written according to EN 4500-001, and it gives the order in which element groups shall appear. Clause 4.5.3 says the melting method shall use the terms listed in 4.2.2, such as air melted, inert gas melted, or vacuum melted. This matters because the same alloy can be described differently if composition or melt route are not controlled.
Complete Table 1 in a fixed sequence
Clause 4.5 lays out the lines of Table 1, from material designation and chemical composition through form, production method, intended processing, dimensions, technical specification, and dimensional standard. It then continues through delivery condition, heat treatment, test sample and test piece details, and the different property and inspection lines.
For a buyer or supplier, this is the core of the document: Table 1 is where the standard captures what material is being standardised and how it is to be identified, tested, and inspected.
State delivery condition and use condition clearly
Clause 4.5.10 gives the permitted delivery condition terms, including as manufactured and annealed. Clause 4.5.12 says the use condition shall use those same terms or state delivery condition. In practice, this avoids confusion between the condition in which the product is supplied and the condition under which its properties are reported.
Enter the required property and inspection lines
Clause 4.5.19 to 4.5.26 covers the lines for tensile properties, hardness, shear strength, bending, impact strength, and creep. Clause 4.5.28, 4.5.29, 4.5.31, 4.5.32, and 4.5.33 cover marking inspection, dimensional inspection, notes, typical use, and product qualification.
This matters because the document separates mechanical property reporting from inspection and from qualification information. A technical committee can therefore state what is measured, what is checked, and what is only informative.
Apply the non-used lines and linked material correctly
Clause 4.5.27 and clause 4.5.30 identify lines that are not used, and clause 4.5.26 says the reference heat treatment line is included. Clause 4.5.27 also directs the relevant lines to EN 4500-001. This means the document keeps the table format aligned across the EN 4500 series instead of rewriting common parts in each standard.
Use the annex examples to complete real standards
Annex C shows that Table 1 is a normative element and that the documents listed in it shall be applied. Annex D gives an example completion of Table 1 for a nickel base braze alloy and shows how qualification, thermal analysis, wettability, porosity, and formability of joining material are entered. For users, the annexes are valuable because they turn the drafting rules into a worked format.
What terms does EN 4500-006 define?
EN 4500-006 applies the terms and definitions from EN 4259 and EN 4500-001. The document itself does not list its own definition set in Annex C, so the key terms used in the standard come from those linked standards.
- ECISS designation - the designation shown in brackets after the material designation when one exists, for information.
- Method of melting - the melting route used for the material, such as air melted or vacuum melted.
- Form - the product form of the filler metal, such as foil, powder, paste, tape, or wire.
- Delivery condition - the condition in which the product is supplied, such as as manufactured or annealed.
- Use condition - the condition stated for use reporting in Table 1, which may repeat the delivery condition.
- Product qualification - the qualification status and programme associated with the material, agreed between manufacturer and purchaser.
- Dimensional standard - the dimensional standard applicable to the product, as entered in Table 1.
Who uses EN 4500-006?
EN 4500-006 is used by aerospace standards developers, especially technical committees preparing metallic material standards. It is also used by manufacturers and suppliers of filler metals for brazing, purchasers who specify those products, and quality or certification staff who need to check that a material standard is written in the required form.
Test laboratories and qualification engineers use it when they need to understand how the requirements, inspection items, and qualification information are organised in aerospace material standards. In practice, it supports consistent drafting, review, and procurement language across aerospace filler-metal standards.
What changed in EN 4500-006 from the previous edition?
EN 4500-006 supersedes EN 4500-006:2024. The foreword states these significant technical changes compared with that edition:
- missing text was added to the scope
- line 4.3, Further intended processing, was added in the body and in Annex D
- line 5.2, Dimensional standard, was added in the body and in Annex D
- introductory sentences were added to Table 1 in Annex C to make clear that Table 1 is normative and that the listed documents shall be applied
- editorial changes were made to clarify whether references to other documents or annexes are normative or informative
- the document was restructured and the template was simplified to form a single continuous table
Which standards are used with EN 4500-006?
EN 4500-006 normatively references EN 4259 and EN 4500-001. EN 4259 provides the general terms and definitions for aerospace metallic materials, while EN 4500-001 provides the general drafting rules used throughout the series.
| Document | Role in EN 4500-006 |
|---|---|
| EN 4259 | General terms and definitions for aerospace metallic materials |
| EN 4500-001 | General drafting rules for material standards in the series |
| EN 4258 | General organisation of aerospace metallic material standardisation |
| EN 3875 | Example technical specification referenced in Annex D and the bibliography |
| EN 2032-001 | Conventional designation, listed in the bibliography |
| EN 2043 | General requirements for semi-finished product qualification, used in the example qualification notes |
| CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations - Part 3 | Basis for the structure and drafting of CEN and CENELEC documents |
The introduction also places EN 4500-006 within the EN 4500 series alongside EN 4500-001 to EN 4500-005.
What does the EN 4500-006 document contain?
EN 4500-006 contains drafting rules, not product values. Its main technical content is the structure of Table 1 and the permitted wording for titles, forms, melting methods, delivery condition, test lines, inspection lines, notes, typical use, and product qualification.
The annexes add worked examples and completion guidance for the title page, introduction, scope, references, terms and definitions, requirements, and bibliography. Annex D is the most detailed part because it shows how the table is completed for a representative braze alloy, including where composition, thermal analysis, wettability, porosity, and join-formability information are entered.
