Overview

IEC TS 62393:2005 is a Technical Specification published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines standardized methods for battery run-time measurement of portable and hand-held multimedia equipment, especially focusing on mobile personal computers. This standard addresses the need for reliable and consistent measurement of battery life under defined operating conditions to provide clear information to users and manufacturers.

Effective battery run-time measurement is crucial due to the increasing complexity and power consumption of mobile computers, especially with multimedia playback and wireless communication functions. Inaccurate battery life indication can lead to unexpected shutdowns causing data loss or interruption of critical tasks.

Key Topics

  • Scope: Defines an operation-mode mix for battery-powered portable and handheld multimedia devices, focusing on mobile computers to clarify how battery run-time should be standardized.

  • Measurement Methods: The standard outlines two primary battery run-time measurement methods to evaluate battery life:

    • Method (a) - Continuous Multimedia Playback Test:

      • Playback of a specified MPEG video file directly from the hard disk at a minimum luminance of 20 cd/m² on the LCD.
      • Sound muted or minimized to reduce power variance.
      • Playback resolution fixed at 320 × 240 pixels.
      • Ensures power management settings do not introduce frame drops during playback.
      • The entire file must be streamed without caching the entire content in RAM.
      • Manufacturer to disclose any deviations from default factory settings.
    • Method (b) - Idle Desktop Display Test:

      • The device displays the desktop screen at the lowest possible LCD luminance without turning off backlight or screen.
      • The system remains idle, with details of any power management settings disclosed.
      • Allows hard disk drive power-off during measurement if applicable.
  • Run-Time Calculation:
The battery life is calculated as the average of the two methods' results, rounded down to one decimal place and may be reported as approximate (e.g., "about 5.6 hours").

  • Transparency and Disclosure:
All settings differing from the factory defaults used during testing should be clearly disclosed to end-users via brochures, websites, or information centers to maintain transparency and comparability between products.

  • Power Management Settings:
While the standard does not rigidly define all power management options, it emphasizes the importance of disclosing configurations used during testing to avoid discrepancies in reported battery life.

Applications

IEC TS 62393:2005 is essential for:

  • Mobile Computer Manufacturers:
To standardize battery testing protocols ensuring consistent, reliable, and comparable run-time reporting across product lines.

  • Test Laboratories and Certification Bodies:
For evaluating mobile computer battery life under standardized conditions, supporting product claims and marketing.

  • Consumers and End-Users:
Provides clearer and more reliable battery life information to aid purchasing decisions and usage planning.

  • Software Developers focused on multimedia and power management:
Understanding standardized conditions helps optimize power use in multimedia applications without compromising declared battery life.

  • Retailers and Resellers:
To verify manufacturer claims and inform customers accurately about expected device performance.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60034-1: General standards for electrical machines, useful for understanding numbering and publication conventions.
  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2: Guidelines on drafting and publishing international standards that IEC TS 62393 follows.
  • Other IEC Multimedia Equipment Standards: Emerging standards under IEC Technical Committee 100 concerning audio, video, and multimedia systems.

Related Keywords: battery run-time measurement, mobile computers, portable multimedia equipment, power management, battery life testing, IEC standards, multimedia playback battery test, LCD luminance battery test, standardized battery measurement methods.

By adhering to IEC TS 62393:2005, stakeholders in the mobile computing industry can ensure transparent, repeatable, and fair measurement of battery run time, enhancing user trust and facilitating innovation in portable device design and power management.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with an IEC Publication.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of
patent rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
The main task of IEC technical committees is to prepare International Standards. In
exceptional circumstances, a technical committee may propose the publication of a technical
specification when
• the required support cannot be obtained for the publication of an International Standard,
despite repeated efforts, or
• the subject is still under technical development or where, for any other reason, there is the
future but no immediate possibility of an agreement on an International Standard.
Technical specifications are subject to review within three years of publication to decide
whether they can be transformed into International Standards.
IEC 62393, which is a technical specification, has been prepared by IEC technical committee
100: Audio, video and multimedia systems and equipment.
