Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-60:2023/A11:2023 is a European Standard that establishes the specific safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, focusing specifically on whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas. Issued by CENELEC (CLC) and aligned with IEC 60335-2-60:2017, this amendment (A11) introduces agreed European common modifications to address region-specific needs and regulatory updates.

This standard is essential for manufacturers, importers, and stakeholders involved in the design, production, testing, and distribution of electrically powered whirlpool bathtubs and spas for both residential and similar settings. Its application helps ensure consistent safety levels, addresses reasonably foreseeable hazards, and supports compliance with the regulatory frameworks across Europe.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope and Exclusions: The standard details requirements for whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas, including both portable and stationary units. It clarifies that while it considers the risks encountered by most users, it does not generally cover the use of these appliances by unsupervised children or specific groups with vulnerabilities beyond those addressed by the document.

  • Safety Classification and Ingress Protection: EN IEC 60335-2-60:2023/A11:2023 specifies appliance classification (Class I, II, III) and minimum ingress protection ratings (e.g., IPX4, IPX5, IPX8) depending on the type and use of the whirlpool product.

  • Markings and User Instructions: The document sets requirements for visible safety markings and comprehensive instructions, particularly warning users about residual current devices (RCDs), correct appliance handling, and mandatory testing for safety mechanisms.

  • Component and Construction Requirements: There are explicit construction criteria for electrical components, internal wiring, and installation of RCDs, especially for transportable whirlpool spas. The standard also prescribes minimum requirements for the durability and mechanical strength of components, especially those integral to safety.

  • Testing and Inspection: The standard outlines necessary tests to verify compliance regarding electric strength, leakage current, and mechanical robustness, ensuring product resilience in real-world operating conditions.

Applications

EN IEC 60335-2-60:2023/A11:2023 applies to a range of electrical products including:

  • Domestic whirlpool baths: Ensuring family bathrooms equipped with whirlpool features meet stringent European safety standards.
  • Whirlpool spas (portable and stationary): Covering products used in private homes, hotels, wellness facilities, and similar locations.
  • Supporting products: Such as transportable devices, control panels, and portable RCD systems associated with these installations.
  • Commercial installations: When household-grade appliances are used in commercial contexts, the standard references additional requirements as appropriate.

Compliance supports manufacturers and importers in market access, meeting CE marking obligations, and limiting liability by demonstrating product safety due diligence.

Related Standards

  • EN IEC 60335-1: General requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, forming the foundational benchmark for all products in scope.
  • IEC 60364-7-701: Requirements for special low-voltage installations, specifically bathrooms and showers.
  • IEC 60364-7-702: Electrical installations for swimming pools and fountains, referenced for installation guidelines.
  • IEC 61540: Requirements for residual current-operated protective devices (RCDs), relevant for RCD compliance in whirlpool spas.
  • EN 50525-2-21: Design standards for flexible power and control cables, referenced for cord specifications in certain national deviations.
  • EN 61008-2-1: Standards for the testing of portable RCDs, referenced in country-specific deviations (e.g., Switzerland).

Following EN IEC 60335-2-60:2023/A11:2023 ensures that manufacturers and installers of whirlpool baths and whirlpool spas provide safe, reliable products that comply with the latest European safety expectations. This supports both product credibility and overall consumer protection in the market for domestic sanitary installations.
