Overview
EN 12545:2000/prA1 is a Type 1 amendment to the EN 12545:2000 noise test code for footwear, leather and imitation-leather goods manufacturing machines. Prepared by CEN/TC 201, this draft amendment updates normative references, aligns the standard with the revised EU Machinery Directive (2006/42/EC), and introduces editorial and structural clarifications. The document includes informative Annexes ZA and ZB describing relationships with EU directives and is intended to support conformity assessment and consistent noise testing across machine families.
Key benefits:
- Harmonised approach to noise measurement for footwear and leather machinery
- Clear linkage to EU directives for conformity presumption
- Updated normative references to current EN/ISO acoustics standards
Key Topics
Scope and classification: The amendment clarifies the machinery families covered, including cutting and punching, roughing/scouring/polishing/trimming, footwear moulding, lasting, nailing, modular shoe repair, presses, splitting/skiving/cutting/cementing and cement drying machines.
Normative references: EN ISO acoustics standards are referenced for sound power level determination (e.g., EN ISO 3743-1, EN ISO 3744, EN ISO 3746, EN ISO 3747 and other relevant EN ISO methods). The amendment replaces and updates several dated references.
Terms and definitions: The document directs users to the applicable ISO terms and definitions referenced in the normative documents.
Relationship to EU directives: Informative Annexes ZA and ZB explicitly link the standard to Directive 98/37/EC (as previously cited) and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, indicating that compliance with the normative clauses confers a presumption of conformity, within the scope of the standard.
Applications
This amendment and the underlying noise test code are relevant to:
- Manufacturers of footwear, leather and imitation-leather goods machinery who need to assess and declare noise emissions
- Test laboratories performing in-situ and laboratory sound power measurements
- Compliance and safety engineers preparing technical documentation for CE marking and conformity with the EU Machinery Directive
- National standards bodies and technical committees aligning national standards with the CEN amendment
Practical uses include standardised noise testing procedures, consistent reporting of noise emission data, and supporting machine design or mitigation measures to reduce operator and environmental noise exposure.
Related Standards
The amendment references and aligns with a set of machine-specific safety standards and acoustics methods. Key related standards listed in the bibliography include:
- EN 12044: Cutting and punching machines
- EN 930: Roughing, scouring, polishing and trimming machines
- EN 1845: Footwear moulding machines
- EN 931: Lasting machines
- EN 12653: Nailing machines
- EN 12387: Modular shoe repair equipment
- EN 12203: Shoe and leather presses
- EN 13457: Splitting, skiving, cutting, cementing and cement drying machines
For acoustics methods and sound power determination, the amendment references relevant EN ISO standards (e.g., EN ISO 3744, EN ISO 3747 and others). These references should be consulted for detailed test procedures and measurement uncertainty considerations.
Keywords: EN 12545, noise test code, footwear machines, leather machinery, noise emissions, sound power, EU Machinery Directive.

This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
The first reason for amending the published standard EN 12545:2000 is the revision of the EU-Machinery
Directive 98/37/EC into 2006/42/EC, requiring the adaptation of published European standards cited in the
Official Journal of the European Communities under that Directive.
Additionally at this occasion the normative references have been updated, while also some other limited rather
editorial improvements and corrections have been made.
This document has been prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the
European Free Trade Association, and supports essential requirements of EU Directive(s).
For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annexes ZA and ZB, which are integral parts of this
document.
