Safety of machinery - Evaluation of the emission of airborne hazardous substances - Part 9: Pollutant concentration parameter, room method

This European Standard specifies a room method for the measurement of the pollutant concentration parameter of a specified airborne hazardous substance from machines, located in a test room and operating the machines under defined conditions.
This method can only be used for machines with a local exhaust ventilation with an air flow rate ³ 500 m3/h and machines without recirculated air.
Measurement of the pollutant concentration parameter of a machine can serve for the:
a)   evaluation of the performance of a machine;
b)   evaluation of the improvement of the machine;
c)   comparison of machines within groups of machines with the same intended use (groups are defined by the function and materials processed);
d)   ranking of machines from the same group according to their pollutant concentration parameters;
e)   determination of the state of the art of machines with respect to their pollutant concentration parameter.

a)   zur Bewertung des Betriebsverhaltens einer Maschine;
b)   zur Bewertung von Verbesserungsmaßnahmen an der Maschine;
c)   zum Vergleichen von Maschinen innerhalb von Maschinengruppen mit der gleichen    bestimmungsgemäßen Verwendung (die Gruppen werden definiert nach der Maschinenfunktion und nach    den bearbeiteten Materialien);
d)   zum Einordnen von Maschinen aus der gleichen Gruppe entsprechend ihrem Konzentrationsparameter;

a) l'évaluation de la performance d'une machine ;
b) l'évaluation des améliorations apportées à cette machine ;
définis par la fonction et les matériaux traités) ;
d) le classement des machines du même groupe en fonction de leur paramètre de concentration en polluant ;

Overview

EN 1093-9:1998+A1:2008 - Safety of machinery: Evaluation of the emission of airborne hazardous substances - Part 9: Pollutant concentration parameter, room method - specifies a standardized room test to measure the pollutant concentration parameter (Pcr) produced by machines. The method applies to machines operated in a controlled test room, with local exhaust ventilation (LEV) ≥ 500 m3/h or machines without recirculated air. The measured Pcr helps quantify airborne emissions for performance evaluation, product comparison and state-of-the-art assessments.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test environment
    • Test room volume greater than 200 m3.
    • Machine at least 2 m from walls and ceiling; no other sources of the specified pollutant.
    • No recirculated air from LEV; supply air designed to avoid cross-draughts.
    • Verify airflow patterns (e.g., smoke cartridge) so measurement points’ air flows toward LEV.
  • Measurement points and sampling
    • Minimum of 4 measurement points positioned empirically in major emission zones; exact locations defined in relevant type C standards.
    • At least three measurements per point to capture variability.
  • Operation and measurement procedures
    • Machines operated according to intended use, manufacturer instructions and type C standards (e.g., feed rate, tooling, materials).
    • Measurement methods must conform to appropriate International/European standards; measuring time must represent normal operational cycles (including consideration of start-up emissions).
    • Instruments must be calibrated; environmental data (temperature, humidity, pressure) recorded.
  • Result expression
    • Compute mean and standard deviation per test and per point.
    • Pcr = mean value + one-sided 95% confidence interval (room pollutant concentration parameter).
  • Reporting
    • Test report must document machine details, test room layout, LEV description and airflow, measurement procedures and instruments, raw concentrations, Pcr and confidence interval, deviations, tester and dates.

Practical applications

EN 1093-9 supports:

  • Performance evaluation of emission control on machines.
  • Design improvements and verification after modifications.
  • Comparative testing and ranking of machines within the same application group (same function/materials processed).
  • Benchmarking and establishing state-of-the-art emission levels for product families.

Who uses this standard

  • Machine manufacturers and OEMs
  • Accredited test laboratories and independent certifiers
  • Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) engineers
  • Regulatory and conformity assessment bodies
  • R&D teams working on emission control and ventilation design
