Overview

EN 1093-3:2006+A1:2008 (CEN) is a European standard on the safety of machinery that specifies a test bench method to measure the emission rate of a given airborne hazardous substance from machines under defined operating conditions. The standard defines how to operate a test cabin with controlled airflow, mix and sample emissions, calculate emission rates and report results. It supports evaluation, comparison and ranking of machines by airborne pollutant emissions and is not applicable retroactively to machines manufactured before its EN publication.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Test bench principle: machine operated inside a cabin/funnel/duct arrangement with a controlled, uniform airflow that carries emissions to a sampling plane.
  • Air velocity guidance: typical average cabin velocities given - 0.1 m/s for gases and respirable particles, 0.5 m/s for inhalable particles - chosen to ensure pollutant transport to the sampling plane.
  • Test cabin design: requirements on cabin and duct cross-sections, object-to-cabin area limits (test object area ≤ 0.1 Ac), and mixing (axial fan or equivalent) to homogenize concentrations before sampling.
  • Sampling and measurement:
    • Isokinetic sampling for particles and measurement procedures compliant with relevant standards.
    • Minimum of four samplers (five found optimal in referenced research) and use of mixing device even for gases.
    • Use of direct-reading instruments recommended when gravimetric collection would require impractically long runs.
  • Test protocol:
    • Machine operated under intended-use conditions (manufacturer’s instructions and any pollution control equipment in use).
    • At least three tests per condition.
    • Sampling continues past end of pollutant generation to capture residual emissions.
  • Expression of results: emission rates derived from time-integrated pollutant concentrations and measured duct flow (with/without pollution control equipment).
  • Reporting requirements: detailed test report items are specified (machine ID, operational data, control systems, instrumentation and calibration, environmental conditions, number of tests, deviations, responsible personnel, dates, results).

Applications and users

  • Practical uses include:
    • Performance evaluation of machines for airborne emissions.
    • Quantifying emission reductions after control measures.
    • Comparing and ranking machines within groups by emission rate.
    • Establishing state of the art for emission performance.
  • Typical users:
    • Machine manufacturers and designers
    • Test laboratories and conformity assessment bodies
    • Occupational hygiene and safety engineers
    • Product certifiers, R&D teams and procurement specialists

Related standards and context

  • Part of the EN 1093 series (e.g., Part 1 selection of test methods; Part 2 tracer gas; Parts 4, 6–9, 11 addressing capture/separation, concentration parameters and decontamination).
  • References EN ISO 12100-1 (basic safety concepts) and aligns with EU Machinery Directives (informative annexes link to Directive 98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC).
  • Use in conjunction with relevant type C standards for specific machine categories.
