verunreinigenden Stoffen. Die Prüfverfahren werden in zusätzlichen Teilen dieser Europäischen Norm
beschrieben (siehe Tabelle 1 und Anhang A).

Overview
EN 1093-1:2008 - Safety of machinery: Evaluation of the emission of airborne hazardous substances - Part 1: Selection of test methods is a CEN type-B standard that defines parameters and guidance for assessing pollutant emissions from machines and the performance of integrated pollutant-control systems. It helps users select appropriate test methods (laboratory and field) and describes key assessment parameters used to quantify emissions and evaluate control measures. EN 1093-1:2008 is part of the EN 1093 series addressing emission testing and measurement for machinery.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Specifies parameters for assessing emissions from machines and the performance of pollutant control systems; gives guidance on choosing test methods according to machine types and fields of application.
- Assessment parameters: Definitions and use of:
- Uncontrolled emission rate (mass emitted without mitigation)
- Controlled emission rate (mass emitted with control measures active)
- Capture efficiency (fraction of pollutant directly captured by an exhaust or capture system)
- Separation efficiency by mass (performance of air-cleaning/separation systems)
- Pollutant concentration parameter (measured concentration near the machine)
- Decontamination index (improvement in ambient air quality due to control systems)
- Types of test methods: Guidance on method selection based on:
- Nature of the pollutant (real pollutant vs tracer material; aerosols or gases)
- Nature of the test environment - laboratory methods (test bench, room) vs field methods
- Statistical evaluation: Principles for calculating means and confidence intervals to interpret measured data.
- Normative references & compliance links: References EN 626-2 and EN ISO 12100-1, and informative annexes relating the standard to EU directives (e.g., 98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC).
Practical applications
- Selecting suitable emission test methods during machine design, verification and commissioning.
- Evaluating and comparing pollutant control systems (capture and separation efficiency).
- Providing measured parameters for machinery risk assessment and for inclusion in verification procedures (see EN 626-2).
- Supporting conformity assessment and documentation required for machinery placed on the EU market.
Who uses this standard
- Machine manufacturers and OEMs designing control systems and exhausts.
- Safety and compliance engineers performing emission testing and verification.
- Occupational hygienists and test laboratories conducting laboratory and field measurements.
- Regulatory bodies and certification bodies assessing compliance with machinery directives.
