SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 is the SIST adoption of EN 15383:2012+A1:2013 for manholes and inspection chambers made from glass-reinforced thermosetting plastics (GRP) based on polyester resin (UP). It specifies the product types, materials, joints, test methods, marking and conformity rules for buried drainage and sewerage installations that carry wastewater without pressure or, occasionally, at a head of pressure up to 1 bar.

What does SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 specify?

SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 covers GRP-UP manholes and inspection chambers for open-trench, buried installations outside buildings. Inspection chambers are covered only when the invert depth does not exceed 2 m, and the units are circular with nominal sizes within the limit given by EN 14364.

The standard is organized into clauses 1 to 12 plus two normative annexes.

AnnexWhat it covers
Annex ADetermination of longitudinal compressive properties on prism-shaped test pieces from ring sections
Annex BDetermination of the resistance of installed steps to vertical or horizontal loading

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013?

SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 sets requirements for classification, materials, joints, geometry, mechanical strength, leak-tightness, marking and related components. In practice, this means a manufacturer has to define the product class, prove the joint and load performance, and mark the unit so it can be identified and installed correctly.

Classification and materials

  • Clause 4.1 classifies shaft and chamber units by nominal size (DN), internal height and nominal stiffness (SN). The stiffness class matters because it tells the buyer and installer what ground and traffic conditions the unit is intended to tolerate.
  • Clause 4.2 requires GRP-UP construction using the stated glass reinforcement and polyester resin system. Where seals are used, the elastomeric material has to meet EN 681-1, and exposed metal parts are checked for corrosion resistance in saline immersion.
  • The units are type-tested at the reference temperatures given in Clause 4.3, and dimensions are measured using EN ISO 3126 or an equally accurate method. This keeps laboratory results and production checks comparable.

Joints and watertightness

  • Clause 4.4 distinguishes flexible joints from rigid joints and requires the manufacturer to state joint dimensions if requested. The practical point is interchangeability: components from different suppliers must still fit and perform as a watertight assembly.
  • Clause 4.5 requires joint testing with EN 1119 for flexible joints and ISO 8533 for rigid wrapped or cemented joints. The tested assembly has to stay watertight and undamaged under the stated pressure conditions, so the joint is verified as a service component rather than only as a part on paper.
  • Clause 7 links the product to EN 476 leak-tightness expectations for use in drainage and sewerage. This helps purchasers focus on whether the complete manhole or inspection chamber is suitable for pressure variations in service.

Geometry, strength and load capacity

  • Clause 5 requires compliance with the dimensional rules in EN 14364 and leaves access opening safety to the local rules in force at the place of use. That means the opening must suit the national safety regime for personnel access.
  • Clause 6 uses Annex A to determine longitudinal compressive properties and requires the declared minimum compressive value to be met. It also defines how the manufacturer declares the design load and how the permissible force is calculated, which is important for checking whether the unit suits the expected installation loads.
  • Clause 9.2 requires installed steps to be positioned and tested, and Annex B verifies their vertical load resistance and pull-out resistance. This matters because steps are part of safe maintenance access, not just an accessory.

Marking, ancillary products and conformity

  • Clause 8 requires permanent marking with the standard number, DN and diameter series, stiffness rating, manufacturer identification and manufacture date or code.
  • Clause 9 links tops to EN 124, steps and ladders to EN 13101 or EN 14396, and precast concrete parts to EN 1917.
  • Clauses 10 to 12 cover dangerous substances, installation recommendations and conformity assessment via CEN/TS 14632.

What terms does SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 define?

  • Adjusting unit - the part above the cover slab used to set the final height and receive the cover and frame.
  • Base unit - the vertical unit with the integral base that connects watertight to pipelines.
  • Inspection chamber - a fitting for inspection and cleaning that ends at ground level and does not provide personnel entry.
  • Manhole - a chamber with a removable cover that allows personnel access.
  • Flexible joint - a joint that allows relative movement between connected components, such as a socket-and-spigot joint with an elastomeric seal.
  • Rigid joint - a joint that does not allow relative movement, such as a wrapped or cemented joint.
  • Nominal stiffness (SN) - the stiffness class used to classify shaft and chamber units.
  • Design load (Fj) - the manufacturer’s declared longitudinal compressive load for which the ring is designed.

Who uses SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013?

Manufacturers use SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 to design GRP-UP manholes and inspection chambers and to set their declared classes and marking. Test laboratories use it for the compressive, joint and step tests. Specifiers, buyers, quality managers and certification bodies use it to check suitability for buried drainage and sewerage systems, especially where wastewater access, traffic loading and watertightness matter.

What changed in SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 supersedes EN 15383:2012 and includes Amendment 1 approved by CEN. The foreword states that the text introduced or altered by the amendment is identified in the document.

Which standards are used with SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013?

  • EN 124 - for manhole tops, covers and gratings.
  • EN 476 - for general requirements for drain and sewer components.
  • EN 681-1 - for elastomeric seal materials.
  • EN 1119 - for leak-tightness and damage resistance testing of flexible GRP joints.
  • EN 13101 - for manhole steps.
  • EN 14364:2006+A1:2008 - the base standard for GRP-UP piping components used by this standard.
  • EN 14396 - for fixed ladders for manholes.
  • EN 1917 - for precast concrete cover slabs, reducing slabs and tapers.
  • CEN/TS 14632 - for conformity assessment procedures.
  • EN ISO 604:2003 - for compressive testing in Annex A.
  • EN ISO 3126 - for dimensional measurement of plastics piping components.
  • ISO 2602 - for statistical treatment of test results.
  • ISO 8533 - for testing rigid wrapped or cemented joints.

What does the SIST EN 15383:2013+A1:2013 document contain?

The document contains clause-based requirements, classification tables, joint test summaries, dimensional rules, marking rules and conformity provisions. It also includes figures showing the unit types and the step arrangement, plus formulas for dimensional and load calculations.

Annex A gives the specimen geometry, conditioning, test procedure and result calculation for longitudinal compressive properties. Annex B gives the test set-up, loading procedure and reporting items for installed steps. Together, these parts support design checking, product testing and conformity assessment for GRP-UP manholes and inspection chambers.
