SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 is the Slovenian adoption of EN ISO 3344:1997, published by SIST. It specifies a method for determining the moisture content of reinforcement products made from textile glass, carbon or aramid fibres. It is written for laboratories, manufacturers and others who need a standard way to measure moisture in yarns, rovings, chopped strands, mats and fabrics.
What does SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 specify?
SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 specifies a test method for the moisture content of reinforcement products. The document covers the product forms named in the scope and organizes the method from general scope through reporting.
The document is arranged in clauses covering:
- scope
- normative reference
- definition
- principle
- apparatus
- selection and number of test specimens
- conditioning and test atmosphere
- procedure
- expression of results
- precision
- test report
In practice, that structure takes the user from sampling to measurement, calculation and reporting in one procedure.
What are the key requirements of SIST EN ISO 3344:1999?
SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 is a gravimetric drying method: a specimen is weighed before drying and again after drying, and the loss in mass is taken as water. That matters because the result depends on careful handling, temperature control and fast weighing.
How the measurement is made
Clause 4 states that the specimen is weighed at ambient temperature before and after drying. The usual drying temperature is 105 C, but a lower temperature may be chosen if the product contains volatile matter other than water. In practice, the lab must avoid driving off anything other than water if the result is meant to represent moisture only.
What equipment is needed
Clause 5 calls for a forced-circulation oven, a desiccator, a heat-resistant specimen holder, stainless-steel tweezers, a balance accurate to 0,1 mg, cutting tools or a punch, and a stoppered weighing bottle for some yarns and wetter specimens. The equipment list matters because the method depends on rapid transfer, low handling loss and stable weighing.
How specimens are selected
Clause 6 gives different sampling guidance for continuous-filament yarn, staple-fibre yarn, rovings, chopped strands, milled fibres, woven fabrics and mats. For wound packages, the outer layers are discarded first, and fabric specimens are kept away from edges or selvedges. This helps the result reflect the material being checked, not damage, surface drying or edge effects.
Clause 6 also sets the number of specimens by product form in Table 1. The product specification or the person requesting the determination may require more specimens or repeated determinations at different positions. In practice, this lets the test be adjusted when moisture may vary within the package or sample.
How conditioning is handled
Clause 7 uses ISO 291 for products expected to have less than 0,2 % moisture, with conditioning long enough to reach equilibrium. For products expected to be wetter than 0,2 %, the standard calls for rapid testing after sampling and sealed storage against moisture loss. That means the lab must match the handling to the likely moisture level to avoid changing the result before weighing.
How the result is calculated and reported
Clause 8 covers the weighing sequence, including drying the specimen at 105 C, cooling it in a desiccator and reweighing it. Clause 9 gives the calculation of moisture content as a percentage by mass, and the reported result is either one specimen result or the average of all specimens examined. Clause 11 then requires the report to identify the product, specimen dimensions and mass, number of specimens, individual results and any departures from the method.
What the precision statement means
Clause 10 says the precision of the method is not known because interlaboratory data were not available at the time. For users, that means the standard gives a procedure but not a quantified precision statement for comparing laboratories.
What terms does SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 define?
- Moisture content - the mass of water in a product, measured by the specified method and expressed as a percentage of the moist product mass.
- Elementary unit - the smallest normally commercially available entity of a given reinforcement product.
- Laboratory sample - a part of the elementary unit from which the test specimen is taken when the whole unit cannot be brought to the laboratory.
- Standard atmosphere - the conditioning and testing atmosphere defined in ISO 291.
- Specimen holder - the heat-resistant support used to carry the specimen through weighing and drying without material loss.
Who uses SIST EN ISO 3344:1999?
SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 is used by laboratories testing reinforcement products, by manufacturers of textile glass, carbon and aramid reinforcements, and by quality teams that need incoming, in-process or final moisture checks. It is also used by people who specify or request the determination when product moisture has to be documented for a batch, package or laboratory sample. The method is relevant where moisture can affect handling, storage or later processing of reinforcement materials.
What changed in SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 from the previous edition?
SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 is the second edition of ISO 3344. The foreword states that it cancels and replaces ISO 3344:1977 and that it was technically revised.
Which standards are used with SIST EN ISO 3344:1999?
- ISO 291 - provides the standard atmospheres used for conditioning and testing.
- ISO 1886:1990 - is cited in a note for the meaning of elementary unit and for sampling plans applicable to received batches.
What does the SIST EN ISO 3344:1999 document contain?
The document contains the apparatus list, product-specific specimen selection guidance, a table for the number of specimens, and the conditioning and drying procedure. It also includes the calculation method for moisture content, a precision note, and the required contents of the test report. For users, those parts support routine testing, quality control records and results that can be repeated in a defined way.

3 Definition
For the purposes of this International Standard, the following definition applies:
3.1 moisture content: The mass of water contained in a product, determined by a specified method and
expressed as a percentage of the mass of the moist product.
4 Principle
A test specimen is weighed at ambient temperature, before and after drying at a temperature of 105 “C.
5 Apparatus
5.1 Forced-circulation oven, with an air-Change rate of 20 to 50 times per hour and capable of maintaining a
temperature of 105 “C + 3 “C or the Chosen temperature to within & 3 “C (see clause 4).
5.2 Desiccator, containing a suitable drying agent (for example silica gel, Calcium chloride or phosphorus
pentoxide).
5.3 Specimen holder, made of heat-resistant material, allowing the maximum air flow round the specimen and
from which there is no loss of material. This may be a porcelain crucible, an unoxidisable metal wire basket, etc.
NOTE - One holder may be used to hold several specimens if they tan be transferred from the holder to the oven without
loss of material.

5.4 Stainless-steel tweezers, for handling the specimen and specimen holder.
5.5 Balance, accurate to 0,l mg.
5.6 Polished metal template and suitable cutting tool, e.g. a knife, scissors or a rotary cutting disc (for fabrics
and mats) q
These two items may be replaced by a Punch.
5.7 Stoppered weighing bottle, for weighing aramid yarn and when the specimen is expected to have a moisture
content higher than 0,2 % (for example, specimens taken from the centre sf a package or wet chopped Strands).
6 Selection and number of test specimens
6.1 Selection of specimens
Unless indicated otherwise in the product specification or by the person requesting the determination, take the
specimens as described below:
6.1 .l Continuous-filament yarn, spun yarn, rovings
The way in which the test specimens are taken is intended to enable the moisture content in the surface layers of
the wound package to be checked.
Unwind and discard the outer layers, then, for each specimen, take a length of the wound package with a mass of at
least 5 g, but preferably between 15 g and 30 g.
In cases when the moisture content of the wound package is liable to increase towards the centre, the product
specification, or the person requesting the determination, may stipulate that the determination be carried out on one
or more specimens taken at one or more specified locations within the package. Care should be taken to avoid
injuty when cutting into a package in Order to resch the specimen Position at the centre. Weigh specimens taken in
this way as quickly as possible. For this purpose, the specimen may be placed in a previously weighed weighing
bottle (5.7).
