Overview
EN 15886:2010 - "Conservation of cultural property - Test methods - Colour measurement of surfaces" (CEN) defines an instrumental method to measure surface colour and colour change of porous inorganic materials (natural stone, mortar, plaster, brick and similar). The method covers representative specimens and indoor/outdoor objects with matte surfaces; glossy surface appearance is explicitly excluded. Colour is expressed using CIE colourimetry (CIELAB, tristimulus data) and numerical colour-difference formulas.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: measurement of surface colour and chromatic changes on porous inorganic materials; applies to untreated, treated or aged surfaces.
- Instrumentation:
- Tristimulus colorimeters or reflectance spectrophotometers
- Spectral range: 380–780 nm with acquisition at least every 10 nm
- Recommended illuminant: CIE D65 (alternatives A, C allowed)
- Observers: CIE 1931 (2°) and CIE 1964 (10°) recommended
- Recommended geometry: d/8° (specular excluded); other geometries allowed if reported
- Measurement protocol:
- Specimens: minimum five representative specimens if available; specimen surfaces must extend beyond instrument measurement area
- Objects: avoid surface abrasion (sandpaper may be used only on specimens, not on objects)
- Environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity) must be recorded and reproduced for before/after comparisons
- Measuring area: adapt diameter to material heterogeneity (large area to average texture; down to 1 mm for localized features)
- Minimum five measurements per specimen/object to obtain reliable averages
- Reproducibility: repeat series until colour-difference between successive averages is ∆E ≤ 1.5
- Colour calculation:
- Transform XYZ to CIE Lab* (1976)
- Compute total colour difference ∆E* (CIELAB) and recommended ∆E94 (LCH* corrected) for perceived-difference accuracy
- Reporting: include instrument specs, geometry, observer, illuminant, number of measurements, reproducibility, ∆L*, ∆a*, ∆b*, ∆E* and (if used) ∆E94 results, photos/graphics of measured areas.
Applications
EN 15886:2010 is practical for:
- Museum and heritage conservation: documenting colour before/after treatments
- Conservation science and condition monitoring of stone facades, murals, plasters
- Restoration labs: quality control of cleaning, consolidation, coatings
- Architectural conservation and material testing for outdoor exposure studies
Keywords: EN 15886:2010, colour measurement, CIELAB, ∆E, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, porous inorganic materials, conservation of cultural property.
Who uses it
Conservators, conservation scientists, laboratory technicians, restoration specialists, heritage managers and materials researchers who need standardized, reproducible colour data for decision-making, documentation and publishing conservation results.

Main general terms and definitions concerning conservation of cultural property 3 Terms and definitions For the purposes of this document, the terms and definitions given in prEN 15898:2010 and the following apply. 3.1 porous inorganic materials natural stones as well as artificial materials such as mortar, plaster, brick and others 3.2 chroma attribute of colour used to indicate the degree of departure of the colour from a grey of the same lightness
NOTE See ASTM E 284. 3.3 lightness
attribute by which a perceived colour is judged to be equivalent to one of a series of greys ranging from black to white
NOTE See ASTM E 284. 3.4 hue
attribute of a visual perception according to which an area appears to be similar to one of the colours, red, yellow, green, and blue, or to a combination of adjacent pairs of these colours considered in a closed ring
NOTE See the International Commission on Illumination CIE (1931) 3.5 reflectance factor
R% percentage ratio of the reflected radiant power compared to incident radiant power SIST EN 15886:2010
NOTE The interpretation of numerical data is connected directly to visual perception. It is based on the principle that colours are obtained by mixing together the three imaginary colour as primaries defined X, Y, Z. These primaries define the reference frame in the tristimulus space and any set (X,Y,Z) is a vector in this space. The principal property of the reference frame is that the Y component is the luminance factor, generally given on a percentage scale.

NOTE 2 The L*a*b* system is useful for calculations of colour differences because it allows them to be defined by numerical values. NOTE 3 In the CIE L*a*b* colour space the colour coordinates in this rectangular coordinate system are:
L* - the lightness coordinate. The scale for L* ranges from 0 (black) to 100 (white); a* - the red/green coordinate, with +a* indicating redness and -a* indicating greenness; b* - the yellow/blue coordinate with +b* indicating yellowness and -b* indicating blueness.
