Overview

SIST EN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 specifies essential test and measurement procedures for evaluating the mating durability of fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components. As part of the IEC 61300 series, this standard describes methods to assess the effects of repeated mating and un-mating cycles on optical and mechanical performance under typical usage conditions. Robust mating durability testing is crucial for ensuring reliable field performance of fibre optic connectors, adapters, sockets, and associated passive components in telecommunication, data, and industrial networks.

Key Topics

  • Mating Durability Testing: The standard outlines a procedure to repeatedly mate and un-mate fibre optic connectors (such as plug-socket and plug-adapter-plug configurations), monitoring for optical performance degradation and mechanical wear.
  • Test Procedure:
    • Initial inspection and baseline measurements of devices under test (DUTs)
    • Controlled and repeated mate/un-mate cycles according to specified severity levels
    • Regular cleaning and measurement protocols to establish consistent test results
    • Final examination for mechanical damage or excessive wear
  • Severity Levels: Test severity is determined in accordance with relevant IEC performance or reliability standards. Levels specify the number of mating cycles based on device type, such as connectors with cylindrical or rectangular ferrules, or hardened connectors.
  • Measurement Criteria: Optical performance parameters, including attenuation and return loss, are measured throughout the test. The standard also defines cleaning frequency and pass/fail requirements based on optical and mechanical inspection results.
  • Reporting Requirements: The document specifies details to be recorded and reported, including device characteristics, severity level, examination results, and any deviations from the procedure.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 61300-2-2:2026 is widely used for:

  • Quality Assurance: Manufacturers apply this standard during design verification and production to guarantee connector robustness and repeatability in fibre optic cable assemblies and passive devices.
  • Product Certification: Compliance with the mating durability test is often required for certification in telecommunication and data center applications, ensuring products meet industry performance standards.
  • Reliability Testing: System integrators and laboratory testing facilities use this procedure to assess the long-term reliability and lifespan of connectors and interconnecting devices subjected to frequent connection/disconnection cycles.
  • Procurement Specifications: The standard serves as a reference for procurement contracts, specifying agreed-upon durability benchmarks for supplied fibre optic components.

Related Standards

  • IEC 61300-1: Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components – Basic test and measurement procedures – Part 1: General and guidance
  • IEC 61300-3-1: Examinations and measurements – Visual examination

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible f
