Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components - Performance standard - Part 1-3: General and guidance for single-mode fibre optic connector and cable assembly for industrial environment, Category I (IEC 61753-1-3:2014)
IEC 61753-1-3:2014 defines the minimum initial performance, test and measurement requirements and severities which a connector or cable assembly with single-mode fibres needs to satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting IEC Category I (industrial environment). Category I is an additional environmental category to C, U, O and E already described in IEC 61753-1. Category I is based on the MICE Table described in ISO/IEC 24702. The performance tests evaluate the product for two basic acceptance criteria: mechanical integrity and optical transmission requirements, by simulating the effects of exposure to the environment in which it will be installed, simulating installation and intervention conditions, and evaluating specified features of the product. The defined performance test procedures simulate the situation in a mated condition under use in an industrial environment. It is not the intention to simulate the situation:
- when being mated or demated;
- during the assembling of the connector;
- during transportation and storage of the connector. Reliability tests for life time expectations are not covered by this standard.

- lorsque le connecteur est accouplé ou désaccouplé;
- pendant l'assemblage du connecteur;

v primeru spojevanja ali ločevanja;
med sestavljanjem konektorja;
med prevozom in shranjevanjem konektorja.
Preskusi zanesljivosti za pričakovanja glede življenjske dobe niso zajeti v tem standardu.

Overview
EN 61753-1-3:2014 (CLC adoption of IEC 61753-1-3:2014) is a performance standard for single‑mode fibre optic connectors and cable assemblies intended for industrial environments (IEC Category I). It defines the minimum initial performance, test and measurement requirements, and test severities required to classify a product as meeting IEC Category I (industrial environment). Category I is an additional environmental category referenced alongside C, U, O and E and is aligned with the MICE Table concept from ISO/IEC 24702.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Establishes initial performance criteria (mechanical integrity and optical transmission) rather than lifetime reliability. Tests simulate mated‑condition service in industrial installations.
- Environmental basis: Category I is based on the MICE classification (Mechanical, Ingress, Climatic, Electromagnetic) used for industrial premises.
- Test types referenced: Uses procedures from the IEC 61300 series and other IEC standards to address vibration, mating durability, fibre/cable retention, torsion, tensile strength, bending moment, shock, crush resistance, impact, temperature cycling, salt mist, solvent/contaminant resistance and damp heat cyclic tests.
- Measurements: Focus on optical performance (attenuation, return loss and transient loss) and mechanical acceptance criteria. Test reports must document sample definition, sample size and test results.
- Test conditions: Procedures simulate behavior when connectors are mated in service; they do not simulate mating/demating, connector assembly, transportation or storage. Lifetime reliability testing is outside the standard’s scope.
Applications
EN 61753-1-3 is practical for:
- Connector and cable manufacturers designing or qualifying single‑mode products for industrial automation, factory floors, process control, transportation and harsh plant environments.
- Test laboratories that perform environmental qualification and produce test reports for product acceptance.
- Systems integrators and specifiers who need to select passive fibre components that meet defined industrial performance grades.
- Procurement and compliance teams requiring objective, standardized test evidence that single‑mode connectors and assemblies are suitable for IEC Category I installations.
Using this standard helps ensure connectors deliver reliable optical transmission and mechanical integrity when installed and used in mated condition within industrial premises.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC

PERFORMANCE STANDARD –
Part 1-3: General and guidance for single-mode fibre optic connector
and cable assembly for industrial environment, Category I
1 Scope
This part of IEC 61753 defines the minimum initial performance, test and measurement
requirements and severities which a connector or cable assembly with single-mode fibres
needs to satisfy in order to be categorized as meeting IEC Category I (industrial environment).
Category I is an additional environmental category to C, U, O and E already described in
IEC 61753-1. Category I is based on the MICE Table described in ISO/IEC 24702.
The performance tests evaluate the product for two basic acceptance criteria: mechanical
integrity and optical transmission requirements, by simulating the effects of exposure to the
environment in which it will be installed, simulating installation and intervention conditions,
and evaluating specified features of the product.
The defined performance test procedures simulate the situation in a mated condition under
use in an industrial environment. It is not the intention to simulate the situation:
when being mated or demated;
during the assembling of the connector;
during transportation and storage of the connector.
Reliability tests for life time expectations are not covered by this standard.
