SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 is the Slovenian draft amendment corresponding to EN 13445-8:2014/prA2. It updates the aluminium and aluminium alloy part of the EN 13445 unfired pressure vessel series, covering design, fabrication, inspection and testing for pressure vessels and their parts. Engineers, fabricators, inspectors and buyers use it when aluminium-specific rules need to be added to the general EN 13445 requirements.

What does SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 specify?

SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 specifies additional requirements for unfired pressure vessels and their parts made of aluminium and aluminium alloys. The scope limits use to vessels loaded up to 500 full cycles and excludes cast materials in this version.

The document is organized as an amendment to the whole part, with targeted changes in Clauses 2, 5, 6, 7 and 8, a revised Annex A, a new normative Annex B, a new informative Annex C, and bibliography updates.

AnnexWhat it covers
APlate data and temperature-dependent values for aluminium plate
BNormative detailed assessment of fatigue life
CInformative in-service monitoring of vessels operating in fatigue service

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018?

Material and temperature control

Clause 5.5 ties chemical composition to the material specification and recommends low hydrogen and low lead levels for welded components. In practice, this means the material supply needs to be controlled for weldability and service performance, not just nominal alloy type.

Clause 5.6 allows any product form listed in EN 12392:2016 for the relevant material and temper, provided the basic material requirements are met. Other materials may be used by agreement, but only with a particular material appraisal. It also says components made to EN 13480-8:2017 can be used without extra testing and inspection, while the vessel design still has to account for joint efficiency and the NDT extent in Table 8.3-1.

Design limits and fatigue

Clause 6.2 tightens the temperature rules for material group 22.4: above 75 °C, use is limited to non-corrosive service up to 200 °C. The same clause requires proof-stress values above 20 °C to be taken by linear interpolation from Annex A, which matters when you calculate allowable stress at operating temperature.

Clause 6.5 sends fatigue design beyond 500 equivalent cycles to Annex B. That means cyclic service needs a separate fatigue assessment instead of relying only on the basic vessel design rules.

Clause 6.7 adds limits for openings with reinforcing pads. The pad has to sit in close contact with the shell, and only part of the pad counts as reinforcement. For design work, this is the section that tells you when a pad really contributes and when its geometry is too limited to count fully.

Clause 6.11 says the testing-group limits from EN 13445-3:2014, Annex A, apply only when the weld detail is a governing weld. In practice, you only apply those testing-group restrictions where the weld detail controls the design.

Welding and preheat

Clause 7.6 keeps the fabrication requirements from EN 13445-4:2014, but replaces the welder qualification reference with EN ISO 9606-2:2004. That matters because aluminium welding qualifications are handled separately from steel qualifications.

Clause 7.8 allows the preheat temperature limit to be increased for wall thicknesses over 30 mm if the preheat is qualified by the WPQR. For fabricators, that means the higher preheat has to be backed by procedure qualification before it is used on production welds.

Inspection and testing

Clause 8.2.1 limits testing group 4 to TS ≤ 75 °C, 500 full pressure cycles or fewer, and a lower nominal design stress. That gives designers and inspectors a clear boundary for when the group 4 rules may be used.

Clause 8.3 expands the NDT matrix with new cases, including small nozzle or branch connections in non-corrosive service and finned tube to tube socket connections. It also keeps the rule that pneumatic testing requirements take precedence, while still not allowing a lower NDT level than the table requires.

Clause 8.4.1 updates the approved NDT method standards and adds digital radiography using storage phosphor imaging plates or digital detector arrays. Clause 8.5 adds an allowance for automatic ultrasonic testing on aluminium and aluminium alloys when the thickness is at least 4 mm.

What terms does SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 define?

  • Testing group 4 - The service and testing category in Clause 8.2.1 that applies only to vessels limited by temperature, cycle count and nominal design stress.
  • WPQR - Welding Procedure Qualification Record, the qualification record used to support welding and preheat conditions.
  • VT - Visual testing, the direct visual examination used for welds and surface condition.
  • RT - Radiographic testing, the volumetric NDT method used to reveal internal weld imperfections.
  • UT - Ultrasonic testing, the volumetric NDT method used to detect and characterize weld discontinuities.
  • PT - Penetrant testing, the surface NDT method used to reveal open-to-surface flaws.
  • FAT-class - The fatigue class used in Annex B to assign weld details to fatigue design curves and allowable stress ranges.

Who uses SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018?

SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 is used by designers, pressure-vessel manufacturers, welding coordinators, NDT personnel, inspection bodies, quality managers and buyers. It is the aluminium-specific reference for design decisions, material acceptance, welding procedure control, inspection planning and fatigue assessment.

In practice, these users rely on it to:

  • select acceptable aluminium product forms and tempers
  • set design temperature limits and allowable stresses
  • qualify welders and welding methods for aluminium work
  • plan the extent and method of NDT
  • assess cyclic service and in-service monitoring needs

What changed in SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 from the previous edition?

SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 is Amendment A2 to EN 13445-8:2014. The draft changes stated in the document are:

  • updates references throughout the part, including EN ISO 23277, EN 12392 and EN 13445 Parts 2 to 5
  • revises brittle-fracture, chemical composition and material grouping provisions
  • updates design temperature, proof-stress and nominal design stress rules
  • changes fatigue design and adds new requirements for openings with reinforcing pads and testing-group limitations
  • revises welder qualification and preheat rules
  • updates NDT extent, NDT methods and selection of methods for internal imperfections
  • replaces Annex A plate data
  • adds new Annex B and Annex C
  • updates the bibliography

Which standards are used with SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018?

  • EN 12392:2016 - gives the aluminium and aluminium alloy product requirements used for acceptable material forms and composition-related checks.
  • EN 13445-2:2014 - supplies the material rules used alongside this aluminium-specific part.
  • EN 13445-3:2014 - supplies design rules, including cycles, openings, governing welds and fatigue-related references.
  • EN 13445-4:2014 - supplies fabrication rules, including welder qualification and preheat-related provisions.
  • EN 13445-5:2014 - supplies inspection and testing rules, including NDT and leak testing references.
  • EN ISO 23277:2015 - gives penetrant testing acceptance levels for welds.
  • EN ISO 17637 - gives the visual testing method for welds.
  • EN ISO 17640:2017 and EN ISO 23279:2017 - support ultrasonic testing of welds and discontinuity characterization.
  • EN ISO 3452-1:2013 - gives the penetrant testing method used with PT.
  • EN ISO 9606-2:2004 - gives qualification requirements for aluminium welders and welding operators.
  • EN 764-4:2014 - supports the appraisal of other materials used by agreement.
  • EN 13480-8:2017 - is the piping part used as a reference for certain aluminium components that are fabricated, tested and inspected to that standard.
  • EN ISO 10042:2005 and EN ISO 17635:2016 - are used in Annex B for weld imperfection quality and NDT rules in fatigue service.

What does the SIST EN 13445-8:2014/oprA2:2018 document contain?

The document contains updated clause text, revised tables and new annexes rather than a single new design method. Clause 8.3 includes a detailed NDT extent table for different weld types and service cases, including special rows for nozzle and branch connections, tube ends into tube sheets, attachments, repairs and finned tube connections.

Clause 8.4.1 lists the permitted NDT methods and their reference standards, and it adds digital radiography options. Annex A includes a revised plate table with temperature- and thickness-dependent values. Annex B contains weld-detail classification, fatigue design curves, a thickness correction factor and inspection/testing rules for cyclic loading. Annex C gives in-service monitoring guidance for vessels operating in fatigue service, including cycle recording and inspection planning over the vessel life.

l = min l ; l (6.7-1)
( )
p so p
— the value of e shall not exceed the following:
np
e ≤ 1.5 e (6.7-2)
np ns
— e and l are dimensions of reinforcing pads used in equations for openings that may be reinforced
a,p p
also by reinforcing pads; if a reinforcing pad is not present then the values e and l shall be set
a,p p
equal to zero. If the reinforcing pad is contributing to reinforcement then, for all cases:

preheat temperature is qualified by the WPQR.".
13 Modifications to 8.2.1, General
Replace the third paragraph with the following (in which the first indent was modified - a restriction to
PS ≤ 20 bar is technically not justified):
"Testing group 4 shall be applicable only for:
— TS ≤ 75 °C;
— maximum number of full pressure cycles ≤ 500; and
— lower level of nominal design stress (according to EN 13445-3:2014).".
