EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 is a CEN draft amendment for unfired pressure vessels made of aluminium and aluminium alloys. It adds and updates the requirements that sit alongside EN 13445 Parts 1 to 5, with a focus on design, fabrication, inspection, testing, and fatigue use for vessels up to 500 full cycles.

The foreword says the document supports EU Directive 2014/68/EU. It also makes clear that cast materials are outside the present version, with those details left for a later amendment or revision.

What does EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 specify?

EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 specifies additional requirements for unfired pressure vessels and their parts made of aluminium and aluminium alloys. It is used together with the general rules in EN 13445 Parts 1 to 5, so it mainly adds material, design, fabrication, and inspection provisions that are specific to aluminium.

The document is organized as a series of modifications to the base text, starting with whole-document updates and then moving through material, design, welding, inspection, and bibliography changes. It also adds two annexes that deal with fatigue life and in-service monitoring.

AnnexWhat it covers
B (normative)Detailed assessment of fatigue life for aluminium pressure vessels, including weld-detail classes, correction factors, and fatigue design curves.
C (informative)In-service monitoring of vessels operating in fatigue service, including cycle recording and inspection planning.

What are the key requirements of EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1?

EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 updates the aluminium-specific rules that affect material selection, design temperature limits, fatigue assessment, welding, and non-destructive testing (NDT). In practice, it tells the designer and manufacturer what material forms may be used, how to treat cyclic loading, and how much inspection is needed for different weld details.

  • Clause 5.5, Chemical composition - The chemical composition must follow the material specification. The text recommends controlling the feedstock for welded components, including hydrogen level and lead content, because those factors matter for weld quality and long-term material behaviour.

  • Clause 5.6, Materials and material grouping system - Product forms listed in EN 12392:2016 are acceptable for construction if the relevant material and chemical-composition requirements are met. Other materials can be used by agreement if they satisfy the same requirements and a particular material appraisal is prepared, which matters when a project uses a less common alloy or form.

  • Clause 6.2, Design temperature and properties - For group 22.4 materials, temperatures above 75 °C are limited to non-corrosive service up to 200 °C. The clause also requires proof-stress values above 20 °C to be taken by interpolation from Annex A values, which means the designer must use the temperature-dependent strength data rather than a room-temperature value.

  • Clause 6.5 and new Annex B, fatigue - Fatigue design for more than 500 equivalent cycles is covered in Annex B. That matters when the vessel is expected to see repeated pressure loading, because the design then needs fatigue detail classes and fatigue curves rather than only static pressure checks.

  • New Clause 6.7, Openings with reinforcing pads - Openings fitted with reinforcing pads are subject to geometry limits and contact requirements. In practice, this prevents a pad from being treated as reinforcement unless it is properly fitted and sized for the shell opening.

  • New Clause 6.11, testing groups - The limits for testing groups in EN 13445-3:2014 only apply when the weld detail is a governing weld. This helps avoid over-applying testing-group restrictions to welds that are not controlling the design.

  • Clauses 7.6 and 7.8, welding controls - Welder and welding-operator qualification is tied to EN 13445-4:2014 with a specific replacement reference to EN ISO 9606-2:2004. The preheat rule is also relaxed for wall thicknesses over 30 mm when the preheat temperature has been qualified by the WPQR, which affects welding procedure qualification and shop control.

  • Clause 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5, inspection and NDT - Testing group 4 is limited to service temperature at or below 75 °C, no more than 500 full pressure cycles, and the lower design-stress range from EN 13445-3:2014. The NDT tables are updated for nozzle, branch, tube-end, attachment, repair, and finned-tube cases, and the document allows digital radiography in addition to the named methods.

What terms does EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 define?

  • NDT means non-destructive testing, the inspection methods used to check welds and components without damaging them.
  • VT means visual testing, which is the direct visual inspection of welds and surfaces.
  • RT means radiographic testing, used to examine internal weld features by radiation-based imaging.
  • UT means ultrasonic testing, which uses sound waves to detect and characterize internal discontinuities.
  • PT means penetrant testing, a surface inspection method for finding open surface-breaking flaws.
  • WPQR means welding procedure qualification record, the documented proof that a welding procedure has been qualified.
  • FAT-class is the fatigue detail class used in Annex B to select the appropriate fatigue design curve for a welded detail.

Who uses EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1?

EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 is used by pressure-vessel designers, materials engineers, fabrication shops, welding coordinators, NDT personnel, quality managers, and inspection bodies. It is most relevant when the vessel is made from aluminium or aluminium alloys and when cyclic loading, welded openings, or detailed inspection planning are part of the job.

It also matters to buyers and specification writers, because it tells them what needs to be controlled in the material, welding, and inspection plan before procurement or acceptance.

What changed in EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 from EN 13445-8:2014?

EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 updates EN 13445-8:2014 by revising references and tightening the aluminium-specific technical rules. The stated changes include updated normative references, revised chemical-composition guidance, revised material-grouping text, new rules for openings with reinforcing pads, new limits for testing groups, updated welders’ qualification and preheat provisions, updated NDT methods and extents, revised plate-property data, and the addition of Annex B and Annex C.

It also updates the bibliography and aligns several references with newer editions, including the inspection and testing standards used for weld examination.

Which standards are used with EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1?

  • EN 13445-2:2014 - provides the material rules that Part 8 relies on for aluminium pressure vessels.
  • EN 13445-3:2014 - provides the design rules, fatigue framework, and several references used by the amended clauses.
  • EN 13445-4:2014 - provides fabrication rules, including welder qualification and welding-related provisions.
  • EN 13445-5:2014 - provides inspection and testing rules, including the NDT table structure used in Clause 8.
  • EN 12392:2016 - supplies the aluminium and aluminium-alloy product forms and special requirements used for pressure equipment materials.
  • EN 764-4:2014 - is used for particular material appraisal when non-listed materials are agreed.
  • EN 13480-8:2017 - is cited for aluminium alloy piping components that may be reused without further testing and inspection, subject to design limits.
  • EN ISO 17637, EN ISO 17640:2017, EN ISO 23279:2017, EN ISO 3452-1:2013, EN ISO 23277:2015, EN ISO 17635:2016, and EN ISO 10042:2005 - provide the visual, ultrasonic, penetrant, acceptance, and weld-quality references used in the inspection clauses and Annex B.

What does the EN 13445-8:2026/FprA1 document contain?

The document contains updated clauses on chemical composition, material grouping, design temperature, fatigue design, openings with reinforcing pads, testing groups, welders’ qualification, preheat, and NDT methods. It also includes updated tables for NDT extent and plate design values, plus a figure for a nozzle or branch in non-corrosive service.

Annex B provides a weld-detail classification table and fatigue design curves for detailed life assessment, while Annex C explains how to monitor vessels in fatigue service during operation. These parts are used for design checks, welding qualification, inspection planning, and in-service monitoring.

"For aluminium and aluminium alloys values of 0,2 % proof stress (or 1 % proof stress for material
group 21-1 000 series aluminium) for temperatures above 20 °C shall be established by linear
interpolation between two adjacent values in Annex A except that for alloys 5083 and 5086 the
respective value at 50 °C may be used for 65 °C.".
7 Modification to 6.3, Time-independent nominal design stress
In Table 6.3-2, replace the reference to "EN 12392:2000" with "EN 12392:2016".
8 Modification to 6.5, Fatigue design
Replace the complete existing text with the following:
"For pressure vessels other than testing group 4, fatigue design for over 500 equivalent cycles is
covered in Annex B of this document. For the determination of 500 full equivalent pressure cycles
see EN 13445-3:2014, 5.4.2.".
9 Addition of a new Subclause 6.7, Openings with reinforcing pads

Where an opening is fitted with a reinforcing plate with the presence of a nozzle, d /2r shall not
ib is
exceed 0,8.
EN 13445-8:2014/prA2:2018 (E)
For cases where a reinforcing pad contributes to the reinforcement (see EN 13445-3:2014, Figures 9.4-
3, 9.4-4, and 9.4-10):
— reinforcing plates shall be fitted in close contact with the shell;
— the width of a reinforcing plate l ' to be considered as contributing to reinforcement is given by:
p
'
l = min l ; l (6.7-1)
( )
p so p
— the value of e shall not exceed the following:
np
e ≤ 1.5 e (6.7-2)
np ns
— e and l are dimensions of reinforcing pads used in equations for openings that may be reinforced
a,p p
also by reinforcing pads; if a reinforcing pad is not present then the values e and l shall be set
a,p p
equal to zero. If the reinforcing pad is contributing to reinforcement then, for all cases:
Af = l ' ∙ e (6.7-3)
p p p
10 Addition of a new Subclause 6.11, Limitations in testing groups
"
6.11 Limitations in testing groups

Add to List Entry 7.8 b) the following text:
"For wall thicknesses over 30 mm this temperature limit may be increased to 200 °C provided that the
preheat temperature is qualified by the WPQR.".
13 Modifications to 8.2.1, General
Replace the third paragraph with the following (in which the first indent was modified - a restriction to
PS ≤ 20 bar is technically not justified):
"Testing group 4 shall be applicable only for:
— TS ≤ 75 °C;
— maximum number of full pressure cycles ≤ 500; and
— lower level of nominal design stress (according to EN 13445-3:2014).".
EN 13445-8:2014/prA2:2018 (E)
In Table 8.2-1, in the 1st column, in the 5th row, replace “Maximum thickness for which specific materials
are permitted” with "Maximum thickness at the weld for which specific materials are permitted".
14 Modifications to 8.3, Determination of extent of non destructive testing
Add a new row in Table 8.3-1 (below line numbers 17/18/19, e.g. as 19a), with new boundary conditions
(D2 < 50 mm, D1 < 800 mm, b ≤ 0,15 mm) and NDT requirements as in 17/18/19:
— Prerequisite: only non-corrosive service;
— New Figure 8.3-1 to 19a: nozzle-to-shell connection for non-corrosive service, D2 < 50 mm,
D1 < 800 mm, b ≤ 0,15 mm:
