oSIST prEN 545:2026 is SIST’s Slovenian adoption of draft European Standard prEN 545 from CEN. It specifies requirements and test methods for ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories and their joints for water pipelines outside buildings. The document is for manufacturers, designers, contractors, utilities and buyers who need to specify, test or assess components for water transport, including raw water, treated water, re-used water, drinking water, fire protection, irrigation, snow making and hydro-electricity.

What does oSIST prEN 545:2026 specify?

oSIST prEN 545:2026 applies to ductile iron pipeline components used with or without pressure, installed below or above ground. It covers socketed, flanged and spigot-end products, externally and internally coated, for fluid temperatures between 0 °C and 50 °C, excluding frost, and for sizes DN 40 to DN 2 000. Joint design and gasket shapes are outside the scope, and the document is not intended for areas subject to reaction to fire regulations.

The document is organized into clauses 1 to 9 and Annexes A to H.

AnnexWhat it covers
APressure limits for socket and spigot pipes, fittings, flanged pipes, flanged fittings and accessories, including PFA, PMA and PEA
BLongitudinal bending resistance of pipes
CDiametral stiffness of pipes and allowable ovalization

What are the key requirements of oSIST prEN 545:2026?

Product range, pressure classes and dimensions

Clause 4.1 sets the product family and makes clear that pipes, fittings and accessories supplied with different pressure classes, lengths, coatings or fitting types still have to meet the other requirements of the document. Non-centrifugally cast pipes are treated as fittings. In practice, a product sold to this standard is not judged by its name alone; it must match the material, dimensional and test rules that go with the declared type.

Clause 4.2 and Annex A define the pressure class of a component by its structural performance and the performance of its non-restrained flexible joint. Restrained joints may reduce the allowable operating pressure (PFA), and the manufacturer must declare that value. For buyers and designers, this means the pipe barrel rating, the joint rating and the declared operating pressures all need to be checked together.

Clause 5.1 groups performance testing by DN and PN so that one representative size can cover a family where the design is the same across the range. The main DN groupings are 40 to 250, 300 to 600, 700 to 1 000 and 1 100 to 2 000, with preferred representative sizes given in the clause. If a family includes different designs or different manufacturing processes, it has to be split for testing.

Clause 4.3 and Clause 8 control wall thickness, external diameter, internal diameter, straightness and length. Tables 16 and 17 give the pipe dimensions, while the fitting tables and the flanged-pipe tables set the corresponding geometry for tees, tapers and other shapes. In practice, these tables are what production, receiving inspection and site fit-up are checked against.

Materials, coatings and linings

Clauses 4.4, 4.5 and 4.6 cover tensile properties, hardness, zinc-based coatings, cement mortar linings and paint coatings. The test methods tie these features to EN ISO 6892-1 for tensile testing, EN ISO 6506-1 for Brinell hardness, and Clause 6 for coating and lining measurements. This matters because corrosion protection and mechanical strength are part of the product definition, not optional extras.

Annex D lists optional external and internal coating systems, Annex E links coating choice to soil conditions, and Annex F links cement mortar lining to water characteristics. For procurement, these annexes help match the product to burial conditions and water chemistry. For design, they show when standard protection is suitable and when a heavier coating system is called for.

Joints, saddles and leak tightness

Clause 4.8 requires components and their joints to be leak tight at the allowable test pressure (PEA). Components are checked for no visible leakage, sweating or failure, while joints must meet the performance requirements in Clause 5. Clause 5 separates flexible joints, restrained flexible joints, flanged joints and pipe saddles, so each connection type is validated in the way it is actually used.

Flexible joints are tested for positive internal pressure, negative internal pressure, positive external pressure for push-in joints, and dynamic internal pressure. Restrained flexible joints must be at least semi-flexible and are tested without external axial restraint so that the joint itself takes the end thrust. Flanged joints are tested under hydrostatic pressure together with a bending moment, which reflects service loading rather than a pressure-only check.

Clause 5.5 and Clause 7.4 cover pipe saddles under positive and negative internal pressure. In practice, that is relevant where service connections are made from a main pipeline and the saddle has to stay tight under both pressure directions.

Test methods and conformity control

Clause 6 gives the measurement and works-test methods for dimensions, straightness, tensile properties, hardness, leak tightness, zinc or zinc-aluminium mass, paint thickness and cement mortar lining thickness. Clause 7 adds performance tests for cement mortar lining strength, flexible joints, flanged joints and pipe saddles. This split between routine measurements and performance testing matters because it separates day-to-day production checks from design validation.

Clause 9 requires initial performance testing and factory production control (FPC). The manufacturer also has to manage personnel, equipment, design process, raw materials, in-process control, non-conforming products and corrective action. For a buyer or auditor, this is the part that supports product traceability and declaration checking.

What terms does oSIST prEN 545:2026 define?

  • Ductile iron is cast iron in which graphite is present substantially in spheroidal form, which is the base material used for the pipes, fittings and accessories.
  • Pipe means a straight casting with a uniform bore and socket, spigot or flanged ends.
  • Fitting means a casting other than a pipe that allows pipeline deviation, change of direction or bore.
  • Accessory means any casting or fabrication other than a pipe or fitting that is intended for use in a ductile iron pipeline, such as glands, bolts, locking rings, saddles, flanges, flange adaptors and couplings.
  • Flexible joint is a joint that allows significant angular deflection during and after installation and can accept a slight offset of the centreline.
  • Restrained flexible joint is a flexible joint with a means to prevent separation after assembly.
  • Nominal size (DN) is the reference size designation for components, used for identification rather than as a direct measurement of the part.
  • Pressure class is the designation for a family of components and joints based on verified operating pressures; it uses the letter C followed by a number equal to the maximum PFA in bars for that family.

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
3.1
ductile iron
cast iron used for pipes, fittings and accessories in which graphite is present substantially in spheroidal
form
3.2
pipe
casting of uniform bore, straight in axis, having socket, spigot or flanged ends, except for flanged socket
pieces, flanged spigot pieces and collars which are classified as fittings
3.3
