Overview

ISO 9473-2:2006 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions and designation of hardened strip steel used in the manufacture of dents for reeds in textile machinery. This standard forms Part 2 of the ISO 9473 series, focusing specifically on hardened strip steel as opposed to cold-rolled steel covered in Part 1. It aligns with related standards ISO 366-1, ISO 366-2, ISO 366-3, and ISO 366-4, which define dimensions and designations for various types of reeds used in textile production.

This technical specification is essential for ensuring consistent quality, dimensional accuracy, and material properties of strip steel used in textile combing and weaving accessories, notably the dents-small, sharp teeth in reeds responsible for separating and aligning warp threads.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
ISO 9473-2 defines nominal dimensions, tolerances, and material requirements for hardened strip steel manufactured to produce dents of reeds. It supports the fabrication of precise textile components integral to machinery performance.

  • Dimensions and Tolerances
The standard provides detailed dimensional data including width (b), thickness (s), and permissible tolerances to ensure proper fit and function in the textile machinery. Dimensions are expressed in millimeters with exact tolerances to facilitate interchangeability and performance consistency.

  • Material Specifications
The strip steel must be hardened to achieve the necessary durability and resistance to wear. The choice of steel type, whether non-alloy or stainless steel, is determined by mutual agreement between supplier and purchaser, emphasizing flexibility while maintaining quality standards.

  • Designation System
ISO 9473-2 mandates a clear designation format including:

    • The term "Feuillard d'acier trempé" (Hardened strip steel)
    • Steel type (non-alloy or stainless)
    • Reference to ISO 9473-2
    • Width and thickness measurements
This standard designation ensures clarity and traceability of materials used in textile machinery production.
  • Edge and Dent Quality
Edges of the strip steel dents should be rounded to prevent damage to threads and enhance the durability of reeds. This maintains fabric quality and reduces machinery downtime.

Applications

  • Textile Machinery Manufacturing
Producers of weaving equipment use hardened strip steel compliant with ISO 9473-2 to manufacture dents of reeds, critical for separating warp threads during weaving and ensuring fabric consistency.

  • Quality Control in Textile Accessory Production
Adhering to this standard enables manufacturers and buyers to specify and verify the quality and dimensional accuracy of steel strips used in reed production, facilitating high-quality textile machine operation.

  • Replacement and Maintenance of Textile Equipment
Operators of weaving and combing machines benefit from standardized steel strip dimensions and quality, easing maintenance, repair, and replacement of worn or damaged dents.

  • Research and Development in Textile Engineering
Innovation in textile machinery components often requires material specifications that meet standardized requirements for hardness, dimensions, and durability as outlined by ISO 9473-2.

Related Standards

  • ISO 9473-1: Strip steel for dents of reeds - Part 1: Cold-rolled strip steel

  • ISO 366 series: Set of standards specifying dimensions and designations of various types of reeds utilized in textile machinery.

    • ISO 366-1: Peignes poissés (hooked reeds)
    • ISO 366-2: Metal reeds welded with bands
    • ISO 366-3: Metal reeds with double ligature
    • ISO 366-4: Metal reeds with plastic ligature
    • ISO 366-5: Profiles of capsules for reeds
  • ISO 72 (Textile machinery and accessories committee): Provides broader context on textile machinery materials and accessory standards.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 9473-2 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 72, Textile machinery and accessories,
Subcommittee SC 3, Machinery for fabric manufacturing including preparatory machinery and accessories.
This first edition of ISO 9473-2, together with ISO 9473-1, cancels and replaces ISO 9473:1988, of which it
constitutes a technical revision.
ISO 9473 consists of the following parts, under the general title Textile machinery and accessories — Strip

Avant-propos
