Overview
IEC 60061-3:1969/AMD21:1999 is an essential amendment published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) concerning lamp caps, holders, and gauges for ensuring interchangeability and safety. Part 3 of this series focuses specifically on gauges used to control and verify the compatibility and safety of lamp caps and holders. The amendment supports industry practices by providing standardized tools and measurements critical for product conformity and user safety.
This standard highlights the importance of standardization in electrical components, contributing to global safety, interchangeability, and regulatory compliance across lighting devices. To access the full and updated details, registration to the IEC 60061 database is required.
Key Topics
- Gauges for Lamp Caps and Holders: Defines the dimensions and checks required for physical gauges used in testing and verifying lamp cap and holder compatibility.
- Interchangeability Control: Provides the criteria to ensure lamp caps and their holders can be universally replaced or interchanged without safety risks.
- Safety Standards: Emphasizes the enforcement of mechanical and electrical safety through precise gauge dimensioning and testing protocols.
- International Consensus and Cooperation: Reflects the IEC’s role in unifying the global electrical industry standards through participation from national committees and organizations.
- Amendment Details: Updates and supplements existing parts of IEC 60061 series to address evolving technical requirements and safety improvements related to lamp fittings.
Applications
IEC 60061-3/AMD21:1999 is particularly valuable for:
- Lighting Manufacturers: Ensures production of lamp caps and holders meet universal gauge standards, facilitating product compatibility worldwide.
- Quality Control Laboratories: Provides exact gauge specifications for rigorous interchangeability testing.
- Safety Inspectors and Certification Bodies: Aids in conformity assessments to verify compliance with safety regulations on lamp fittings.
- Electrical Equipment Designers: Assists in the design of fixtures and lamps to meet standard gauge sizes, reducing design errors and recall risks.
- Global Markets and Trade: Facilitates cross-border acceptance and reduces trade barriers by adopting internationally recognized gauge specifications and safety requirements.
Related Standards
- IEC 60061 Series: Covers lamp caps, holders, and gauges comprehensively for various types and shapes beyond Part 3.
- ISO 286-2: Provides dimensional tolerances relevant to gauge and mechanical part manufacturing closely linked to IEC gauge requirements.
- IEC 72 (Dimensions and Output Series for Rotating Electrical Machines): Related to motor dimensions, occasionally referenced for flange and fixing dimensions in electrical devices.
- National and Regional Standards: Often aligned with IEC 60061-3 to ensure local compliance while benefiting from international harmonization.
By adhering to the IEC 60061-3:1969/AMD21:1999 amendment, stakeholders in the lighting industry can ensure that lamp caps and holders are safe, interchangeable, and compliant with recognized international standards. This facilitates product reliability, consumer safety, and streamlined regulatory approvals worldwide.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
