Flexible insulating sleeving - Part 3: Specifications for individual types of sleeving - Sheet 214: Heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving, not flame retarded, thick and medium wall

IEC 60684-3-214:2013 gives the requirements for two types of heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving, not flame retarded, thick and medium wall with a nominal shrink ratio of 3:1. This sleeving has been found suitable for use at temperatures of up to 100 °C.
Type A: Medium wall - internal diameter up to 200 mm typically;
Type B: Thick wall - internal diameter up to 200 mm typically. These sleevings are normally supplied in colour black. Since these types of sleevings cover a significantly large range of sizes and wall thicknesses, Tables A.1 and A.2 of this document provides a guide to the range of sizes available. The actual size will be agreed between the user and supplier. Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However, the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this specification alone. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2005. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical change with respect to the previous edition: Alignment with IEC 60684-3-247 (dual wall) since this Part 3 specification represents a single wall option using identical material. Keywords: heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving

Type A: Paroi moyenne - diamètre intérieur jusqu'à 200 mm typiquement;

Overview

IEC 60684-3-214:2013 is an international standard specifying requirements for flexible insulating sleeving, focusing on heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving that is not flame retarded, with thick and medium wall constructions. This standard, issued by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), addresses two main types of sleeving-medium wall (Type A) and thick wall (Type B)-with nominal shrink ratios of 3:1 and suitability for use at temperatures up to 100 °C. The sleeving is typically black and available in a broad range of sizes with diameters up to 200 mm.

This third edition aligns with IEC 60684-3-247 (dual wall) standards to ensure material consistency and expands on performance requirements compared to the 2005 edition. It serves as a critical guideline for manufacturers and users in designing, selecting, and applying heat-shrinkable polyolefin sleeving in electrical insulation and protection.

Key Topics

  • Types of Sleeving:

    • Type A: Medium wall sleeving; internal diameter up to approximately 200 mm.
    • Type B: Thick wall sleeving; internal diameter also up to approximately 200 mm.
  • Material Specifications:

    • Heat-shrinkable polyolefin material.
    • Not flame retarded.
    • Nominal shrink ratio of 3:1.
    • Carbon black content minimum 2.5% for UV protection.
    • Typically black in color.
  • Performance Requirements:

    • Suitable for operating temperatures up to 100 °C.
    • Mechanical properties including tensile strength (minimum 10 MPa), elongation at break, and secant modulus.
    • Heat shock resistance at 200 °C with retention of mechanical properties.
    • Electrical properties such as breakdown voltage, volume resistivity, and dielectric strength.
    • Resistance to bending at low temperature (-20 °C) without cracking.
    • Dimensional stability and low water absorption (maximum 0.5%).
  • Testing and Conformance:

    • Shrink process parameters standardised-typically oven shrink at 200 °C for 10 minutes.
    • Compliance testing based on typical sizes identified by recovered internal diameter.
    • Requirements detailed through comprehensive tests including heat ageing, fluid resistance, and color fastness to light.
  • Designation and Identification:

    • Sleeving products designated with specific codes indicating type, size (expanded/recovered internal diameter), and color, consistent with IEC color code standards.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.

INTRODUCTION
This International Standard is one of a series which deals with flexible insulating sleeving for

electrical purposes.
The series consists of three parts:

Part 1: Definitions and general requirements (IEC 60684-1)

Part 2: Methods of test (IEC 60684-2)

Part 3: Specifications for individual types of sleeving (IEC 60684-3)

This standard gives one of the sheets comprising Part 3 as follows:
Sheet 214: Heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving, not flame retarded, thick and medium wall.

FLEXIBLE INSULATING SLEEVING –

Part 3: Specifications for individual types of sleeving –

Sheet 214: Heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving,

not flame retarded, thick and medium wall

1 Scope
This standard gives the requirements for two types of heat-shrinkable, polyolefin sleeving, not
flame retarded, thick and medium wall with a nominal shrink ratio of 3:1.
This sleeving has been found suitable for use at temperatures of up to 100 °C.
Type A: Medium wall – internal diameter up to 200 mm typically.
Type B: Thick wall – internal diameter up to 200 mm typically.
These sleevings are normally supplied in colour black.
Since these types of sleevings cover a significantly large range of sizes and wall thicknesses,
Tables A.1 and A.2 of this document provides a guide to the range of sizes available. The
actual size will be agreed between the user and supplier.
Materials which conform to this specification meet established levels of performance. However,
the selection of a material by a user for a specific application should be based on the actual
requirements necessary for adequate performance in that application and not based on this
specification alone.
