Overview

IEC 61231:2010/AMD1:2013 is an essential amendment to the International Lamp Coding System (ILCOS), developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). This amendment updates the lamp coding specifications to include modern lighting technologies and operational modes. The International Lamp Coding System provides a standardized method for categorizing and identifying lamps across various types and technologies, facilitating better communication, supply chain management, and product identification worldwide.

The 2013 amendment introduces significant enhancements such as the inclusion of low-frequency square wave operation, expanded coding for lamps used in high-pressure mercury equipment, and updates reflecting advancements in LED lamp technology. These changes ensure ILCOS remains current with technological progress and industry requirements.

Key Topics

  • Expanded Lamp Categories
The amendment revises several lamp categories with updated terminology and expanded definitions:

    • Incandescent lamps identified as “incandescent lamps – tungsten filament lamps”
    • Introduction of LED modules and lamps as a distinct category
    • Differentiation between high-pressure mercury vapor lamps and those designed for operation in mercury equipment
  • Operational Modes Added
The introduction of low-frequency square wave operation coding (70 Hz to 400 Hz) enhances the description of lamp operating conditions, especially for metal halide lamps. This includes specifying the waveform and frequency type, improving clarity on electrical performance.

  • Detailed Lamp Coding Structure
The amendment outlines a clear coding format including:

    • Lamp wattage
    • Voltage range
    • Starting device type (internal or external)
    • Lamp cap and dimension details
    • Operational frequencies/waveforms
These details enable precise identification of lamp variants, aiding manufacturers and users in selection and compatibility.
  • Updated Terminology and Examples
Terminology refinement is notable, for example, “bulged (candle)” lamp shapes are clarified instead of ambiguous terms. Updated examples reflect real-world lamp types to illustrate new coding structure and nomenclature.

  • Normative References Update
Incorporates IEC/TR 62732 for three-digit color rendering and correlated color temperature codes, enhancing color specification precision in lamp coding.

Applications

  • Lighting Industry Standardization
IEC 61231:2010/AMD1:2013 supports global harmonization in lamp identification, crucial for manufacturers, suppliers, and retailers across the lighting industry.

  • Product Identification and Cataloging
Enables accurate, uniform product descriptions in catalogs, databases, and ordering systems, reducing ambiguity and errors in procurement and inventory management.

  • Compatibility and Specification Verification
Assists end-users, designers, and engineers in verifying lamp compatibility with fixtures and systems based on detailed electrical and mechanical parameters encoded in the lamp identifiers.

  • Regulatory Compliance and Market Access
Facilitates adherence to international standards and enhances market access by providing a consistent lamp coding scheme recognized globally.

  • Support for Emerging Technologies
The inclusion of LED modules and square wave operation shows adaptability to evolving lighting technologies, ensuring the standard’s relevance for innovative products.

Related Standards

  • IEC TR 62732
Provides detailed coding for color rendering index and correlated color temperature, referenced in the ILCOS amendment for color specification.

  • IEC 60432-1
Covers safety for tungsten filament lamps, referenced in the amendment for differentiated lamp groups.

  • ILCOS Base Standard IEC 61231:2010
The parent standard specifying the foundational international lamp coding system, which Amendment 1 updates.

  • General IEC Standards for Lighting Equipment
Other IEC technical committee 34 publications on lamps and associated equipment complement the coding system by covering safety, performance, and test methods.

The IEC 61231:2010/AMD1:2013 amendment enhances the International Lamp Coding System to better serve the evolving landscape of lighting technology. Its detailed, standardized approach facilitates clear communication, compatibility assurance, and compliance within the global electrical and lighting sectors. This standard is a critical resource for professionals aiming for accurate lamp identification and classification in line with international best practices.
