Overview
EN 60745-2-13:2007/prAA is a European safety standard specifically addressing hand-held motor-operated electric chain saws. Originating from the CENELEC Technical Committee TC 61F, this standard focuses on the particular safety requirements applicable to electric chain saws, supporting compliance with the Machinery Directive for enhanced health and safety protection. It supersedes the earlier EN 50144-2-13:2002 standard and works in conjunction with EN 60745-1:2003, which covers general requirements for hand-held motor-operated electric tools.
This standard provides detailed procedures for sound power level measurement, vibration tests, and operational safety measures tailored to the unique hazards posed by electric chain saws. It also incorporates relevant international references such as ISO 9207 for noise measurement, ensuring comprehensive environmental and user safety.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements for Chain Saws: Establishes specific safety measures for electric chain saws that supplement the general safety requirements for hand-held motor tools.
- Sound Power Level Measurement: Defines precise protocols for measuring and reporting the A-weighted sound power levels, using standards like EN ISO 3744 and ISO 9207 to ensure consistency in noise evaluation.
- Vibration Testing: Specifies testing conditions and accelerometer placement on handles to measure vibration exposure accurately, helping minimize operator fatigue and long-term health risks.
- Environmental Testing Conditions: Outlines controlled test environments such as freshly felled softwood logs and specific feed force requirements to simulate real operational conditions.
- Marking and Instructions: Includes safety label guidance and recommends the use of Residual Current Devices (RCDs) to enhance electrical safety for operators.
- Test Procedures Under Load and No Load: Requires multiple test cycles with defined load states to capture comprehensive sound and vibration data.
- Compliance with Machinery Directive: Aligns with European health and safety legislation, ensuring that chain saws meeting this standard conform to regulatory requirements.
Applications
The EN 60745-2-13:2007/prAA standard is essential for:
- Manufacturers developing or improving hand-held electric chain saws to ensure product safety and market access across Europe.
- Safety Engineers responsible for evaluating chain saws in professional forestry, arboriculture, and construction sectors.
- Regulatory Bodies overseeing compliance of motor-operated handheld tools with EU machinery and electrical safety directives.
- Testing Laboratories conducting noise and vibration assessments on electric chain saws to verify adherence to mandated safety levels.
- Purchasers and Users seeking assurance that electric chain saws meet rigorous standards for safeguarding operator health and minimizing environmental noise pollution.
By adhering to this standard, stakeholders can mitigate risks associated with chain saw operation, including noise-induced hearing loss, vibration-related disorders, and electrical hazards, while ensuring conformity with European regulatory frameworks.

within the scope of this standard.
This standard follows the overall requirements of EN 292-1 and EN 292-2.
This Part 2-13 is to be used in conjunction with EN 60745-1:2003. When this standard states
"addition", "modification" or "replacement", the relevant text in Part 1 is to be adapted accordingly.
Subclauses and figures which are additional to those in Part 1 are numbered starting from 101.
Subclauses, tables and figures which are additional to those in IEC 60745-2-13 are prefixed “Z”.
