Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-103:2023/A1:2023 (amendment A1 to EN IEC 60335-2-103:2023) is a European safety standard for electric drives for gates, doors, garage doors and windows used in household and similar environments. It sets particular safety requirements for drives with rated voltages up to 250 V (single‑phase) and higher‑voltage multi‑phase drives (amendment updates include references to 600 V multi‑phase testing). The document aligns with IEC 60335-2-103:2015/A1:2017 and was approved by CENELEC for national implementation.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and applicability: Covers hazards related to the movement of the driven part (horizontal and vertical motion) and electrical safety for household and similar installations.
  • Rated voltages and test voltages: Amendment clarifies test voltage selection for 600 V multi‑phase appliances and adjusts working‑voltage thresholds (replacement of “480” by “600” where applicable).
  • Leakage current and electric strength: Updated requirements and table footnotes specify test voltages at operating temperature for higher‑voltage drives.
  • Clearances, creepage and solid insulation: Additional criteria for rated voltages >300 V ≤346 V, including impulse voltage limits for overvoltage categories I–III and minimum thicknesses for reinforced insulation (single layer) by overvoltage category.
  • Mechanical hazards and stability: Annex DD addresses drives for horizontally and vertically moving doors and gates; tests for stability and mechanical safety (including DD.20.107.2.3) are applied to automatic drives and drives controllable via a telecommunication or communication network.
  • Conformity and national adoption: Specifies implementation timelines and interaction with national standards; attention to possible patent rights is noted.

Practical applications

  • Manufacturers of door/gate/window drives use this standard to design safe products that meet European requirements.
  • Certification and testing laboratories apply the specified leakage, dielectric, clearance/creepage and mechanical test methods to verify compliance.
  • Installers, safety engineers and compliance officers reference the document for safe installation practices and risk assessment of automated entry systems.
  • Product developers ensure compatibility with network‑controlled or remotely commanded drives, which trigger additional mechanical testing.

Who should use this standard

  • Drive and actuator manufacturers
  • Test houses and conformity assessment bodies
  • Product safety engineers and designers
  • Regulatory authorities and standards committees (CENELEC national members)
  • Installers and integrators of automated gates, garage doors and window actuators
