Overview
EN 60335-2-103:2003/prA1 is a key European standard published by the CLC that addresses the safety requirements for electric drives used in household and similar applications. Specifically, it focuses on drives for gates, doors, and windows that move horizontally or vertically. The standard covers appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V for single-phase devices and 480 V for others, ensuring safe operation under typical household voltage conditions.
This standard must be read in conjunction with IEC 60335-1:2010, which sets out the general safety requirements for household electrical appliances. EN 60335-2-103 provides particular safety provisions related to movement hazards and addresses installation, operation, and malfunction scenarios.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard is applicable to electric drives for gates, doors, and windows used domestically or in similar environments, ensuring safety against hazards related to the movement of these driven parts.Movement Safety and Entrapment Hazards
Specific dimensional criteria are given to prevent entrapment of body parts during the operation of gates and doors. For example:- Fingers: Minimum distance of 25 mm
- Feet: Minimum distance of 50 mm
- Heads: Minimum distance of 300 mm
- Whole body: Minimum distance of 500 mm
When these distances cannot be maintained, appropriate safeguarding devices must be installed.
Manual Release Mechanisms
The standard mandates easy and safe operation of manual releases, designed to avoid hazards such as kickback or unexpected motion. Manual release action must interrupt power supply and must be operable with limited force or torque (not exceeding 220 N force or 1.6 Nm torque). It also requires clear labeling adjacent to the manual release.Control Systems and Operation
Control systems must ensure that in case of abnormal operation or faults, the drive either stops safely within one operational cycle or switches to a bias-off mode preventing further hazards. Safety controls must include:- Immediate stop function without need for a key
- Clear instructions on emergency manual release usage
- Reversing or stopping movement on subsequent button actuations with single-button controls
Testing and Compliance
Drives must be tested under the most unfavorable conditions within instruction limits, including with and without optional accessories. Testing verifies safe stop, manual release operation, and prevention of hazardous movement during faults.Construction and Installation Requirements
Installation instructions must specify maximum allowable distances for sliding parts, details for alternative modes of operation, and the permanent fixing of safety labels. Components for alternative modes can be supplied separately if clearly documented.
Applications
EN 60335-2-103 is essential for manufacturers, installers, and safety assessors of electrical drives used in:
- Residential gates and garage doors
- Automated window and door systems
- Motorized security shutters and blinds
- Powered pedestrian doors, including those used in emergency routes and exits
Compliance with this standard ensures that automated entrance and exit systems provide safe operation for end users, prevent injury from mechanical movements, and comply with established European household appliance safety rules.
