This part of ISO 14720 defines a method for the determination of sulfur in powdered and granular non-oxidic ceramic raw materials and materials, which are completely oxidized at a higher temperature in an oxygen atmosphere, e.g. carbon and graphite materials.
For materials which are not completely oxidizable under these conditions, it is possible to determine sulfur that can be released under these conditions, e.g. the adherent sulfur.
This part of ISO 14720 is applicable for materials with mass fractions of sulfur ≤ 10 % and mass fractions of ash  < 20 %, The defined method is limited for materials with mass fractions of barium < 10 mg/kg, because the sulfur bonded in barium sulfate is not detectable with this method.
For the lower detection limit of this method, a mass fraction of sulfur of 0,5 mg/kg in the case of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP/OES) and 5 mg/kg in the case of ion chromatography (IC) has to be considered as a recommended value.

Dieser Teil der ISO 14720 legt ein Verfahren zur Bestimmung des Schwefelgehaltes in pulver- und kornförmigen nichtoxidischen keramischen Roh- und Werkstoffen fest, die bei erhöhter Temperatur im Sauerstoffstrom vollständig oxidieren, z. B. Kohlenstoff- und Graphitwerkstoffe.
Bei Werkstoffen, die bei diesen Bedingungen nicht vollständig oxidieren, ist mit dem festgelegten Verfahren auch der unter diesen Bedingungen freisetzbare Schwefel, z. B. der an der Probe anhaftende Schwefel, bestimmbar.
Dieser Teil der ISO 14720 gilt für Werkstoffe mit Massenanteilen an Schwefel  10 % und an Glührückstand < 20 %. Das festgelegte Verfahren ist auf Werkstoffe mit einem Massenanteil an Barium < 10 mg/kg beschränkt, da in Bariumsulfat gebundener Schwefel mit diesem Verfahren nicht erfasst werden kann.
Als Richtwerte für die untere Nachweisgrenze dieses Verfahrens gelten Massenanteile an Schwefel von 0,5 mg/kg bei Bestimmung mittels Optischer Emissionsspektrometer mit induktiv gekoppeltem Plasma (ICP OES) und 5 mg/kg bei Bestimmung mittels Ionenchromatographie (IC).

Ta del standarda ISO 14720 določa metodo za ugotavljanje žvepla v praških in zrnih (granulah) neoksidativnih keramičnih surovin in materialov, ki so pri višji temperaturi v kisikovi atmosferi povsem oksidirani, npr. ogljikovi in grafitni materiali. Za materiale, ki jih pod temi pogoji ni mogoče povsem oksidirati, se lahko določi žveplo, ki ga je mogoče sprostiti pod temi pogoji, npr. sprijeto žveplo. Ta del standarda ISO 14720 se uporablja za materiale z masnimi deleži žvepla ≤ 10 % in masnimi deleži pepela < 20 %. Ta metoda je omejena na materiale z masnimi deleži barija < 10 mg/kg, ker žveplo, vezano v barijevem sulfatu, ni zaznavno s to metodo. Za nižjo mejo zaznavnosti te metode je treba kot priporočeno vrednost upoštevati masni delež žvepla 0,5 mg/kg v primeru atomske emisijske spektrometrije z induktivno sklopljeno plazmo (AES ICP) in 5 mg/kg v primeru ionske kromatografije (IC).
