Overview
EN 10017:2004 - published by CEN - defines the dimensions, tolerances, nominal cross‑section and nominal mass for steel rod intended for drawing and/or cold rolling. The standard applies to round, square, rectangular and hexagonal rod manufactured in steel grades specified by European product standards. It supersedes earlier EURONORM 17 (1970) and is intended to be adopted as a national standard across CEN member states.
Key topics
- Scope and product types: covers rod for drawing and cold rolling in various cross‑sections (round, square, rectangular, hexagonal).
- Dimensions and tolerances: detailed tabulated nominal sizes, associated dimensional tolerances and ovality/side‑difference limits for each shape and size range (see Tables 1–4 in the standard). Tolerance values vary by nominal dimension.
- Nominal section and mass: provides nominal cross‑section areas and nominal mass per metre (values calculated using a reference density of 7.85 kg/dm3; stainless steel densities are referenced to EN 10088‑1).
- Purchaser information requirements: specifies the information buyers must supply (quantity, product denomination, section shape, reference to EN 10017, nominal dimensions in mm, and applicable quality/product standard). Example ordering formats are given (e.g., “Round rod EN 10017 - 10 - EN 10016‑2 - C10D”).
- Coil mass and inspection: allows agreement between purchaser and manufacturer on coil mass tolerances; permits up to 5% of coils below specified minimum mass. Defines sampling/measurement rules (specimen selection and minimum distances from coil ends - e.g., for 5–6.5 mm diameters measure at ≥5 m from ends, progressively shorter distances for larger diameters).
- Reference and conformity: cites normative references such as EN 10021 (delivery requirements) and EN 10079 (definitions).
Applications
- Procurement and specification of steel rod for subsequent drawing, wire manufacture or cold rolling processes.
- Production control in steel mills and rolling plants to ensure rod dimensions/mass meet customer requirements.
- Quality inspection, incoming material verification and compliance checks for wire‑drawing and cold‑forming operations.
- Design and engineering where accurate nominal cross‑section and mass data are needed for material selection, weight calculations and process planning.
Who uses this standard
- Steel producers and rod mills
- Wire and fastener manufacturers
- Metal fabricators and cold‑forming shops
- Purchasing and quality assurance teams specifying or inspecting rod materials
- Standards and compliance professionals in the steel supply chain
