This European Standard specifies the tolerances on dimensions, shape and mass for semi-finished products intended to undergo hot forming by forging, i.e. blooms, slabs and billets made of:
- general purpose steels, in accordance with EN 10250-1 to 4;
- steels for pressure purposes, in accordance with EN 10222-1 to 5.
It does not cover semi-finished products intended for drop forging which are covered by EN 10243-1.

1.1 This European Standard specifies the dimensional tolerances for steel upset forgings made on horizontal forging machines. The second part of this European Standard applies to hot upset forgings, in the delivery condition, made in carbon and alloy steels. The tolerances specified apply to forgings not exceeding 250 kg in mass or 2 500 mm maximum dimension. Tolerances for heavier or layer forgings are subjected to negociation.

1.1 This European Standard specifies the dimensional tolerances for steel drop and vertical press forgings made under hammers and presses. The first part of this European Standard applies to hot forgings in the delivery condition, made in carbon and alloy steels. The tolerances specified apply to forgings not exceeding 250 kg in mass or 2 500 mm maximum dimension. Tolerances for heavier or larger forgings shall be agreed at the time of enquiry and order.

This European Standard specifies the general delivery conditions for steel closed die forgings. These forgings are produced by blow or pressure of the heated product at a suitable temperature (hot or warm) in a die, which in the forming process shapes the material to the form of the die. Similar products such as warm extrusions and upset forgings, are also regarded as part of the process.

This part of this European Standard specifies the technical delivery requirements for open die forgings, forged bars and products pre-forged and finished in ring rolling mills, manufactured from alloy special steel and supplied in the quenched and tempered condition. Note: The majority of steels listed in this Part of EN 10250 are identical to steels specified in EN 10083-1 and more extensive information on hardenability and technological properties is given in that European Standard.

This Part of EN 10228 specifies methods for the manual, pulse-echo, ultrasonic testing of forgings manufactured from austenitic and austenitic-ferritic stainless steels. Mechanised scanning techniques, such as immersion testing, may be used but should be agreed between the purchaser and supplier.

This Part of EN 10228 describes the method and acceptance criteria to be used for the magnetic particle inspection of forgings manufactured from ferromagnetic materials. The method described is used for the detection of surface discontinuities. It can also detect discontinuities just below the surface but sensitivity to such discontinuities diminishes rapidly with depth.

This part of EN 10228 describes the techniques to be used for the manual, pulse-echo, ultrasonic testing of forgings manufactured from ferritic and martensitic steel. Mechanised scanning techniques such as immersion testing may be used but should be agreed between the purchaser and supplier. This part of EN 10228 applies to four types of forgings, classified according to their shape and method of production. Types 1, 2 and 3 are essentially simple shapes. Type 4 covers complex shapes.
