Overview

prEN 4500-006 - part of the EN 4500 aerospace series - defines specific rules for filler metals for brazing used in aerospace metallic materials standards. Prepared by CEN (ASD-STAN), this draft (August/October 2025) updates the template and editorial structure used when drafting and presenting material standards for brazing filler metals. It is a drafting and presentation standard (a template), not a material specification itself, and is submitted for CEN enquiry; it will supersede EN 4500-006:2024 if adopted.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope and purpose: Establishes rules for how standards covering brazing filler metals should be drafted and presented within the EN 4500 series.
  • Title and identification rules: Prescribes consistent title formats and the inclusion of ECISS designations where applicable.
  • Table 1 (normative template): A continuous, single-table template that is a normative element of the document. Key table lines include:
    • Line 1 - Material designation
    • Line 2 - Chemical composition: rules for element order (C, Si, Mn, P, S; then alloying and trace elements alphabetically; ratios/totals)
    • Line 3 - Method of melting: allowed terms (air melted, inert gas melted, vacuum melted, non‑consumable electrode VIM, consumable electrode VAM/VAR, etc.)
    • Lines 4.x - Form, production method, further intended processing, limit dimensions: standardized form entries and qualifiers for foil, powder, paste, tape, wire (e.g., cold drawn, gas atomized)
    • Lines 5.x–6.x - Technical specification, dimensional standard, delivery condition and heat treatment: required entries (e.g., “as manufactured”, “annealed”) and codes
    • Additional lines: Test specimen definitions, mechanical properties (tensile, shear, hardness, creep, impact - template locations), marking and dimensional inspection, product qualification and typical use
  • Annexes: Informative annexes show completion examples for the title, introduction, scope, Table 1, and bibliography.
  • Normative references: EN 4259 (terms) and EN 4500-001 (general rules) are mandatory references for drafting.

Applications and intended users

This standard is intended for:

  • Standards writers and technical committees drafting aerospace material standards for filler metals and brazing consumables
  • Materials engineers, procurement and quality assurance teams in aerospace OEMs and suppliers who reference material standards
  • Manufacturers of brazing filler metals (wire, foil, powder, paste, tape) preparing product standards and declarations
  • Certification bodies and regulators ensuring documentation consistency for metallic materials in aerospace

Practical uses include preparing standardized material data sheets, defining chemical composition presentation, specifying forms and production qualifiers, and ensuring consistent test and marking entries for product qualification.

Related standards

  • EN 4500-001 - General rules (EN 4500 series)
  • EN 4259 - Definition of general terms
  • Other EN 4500 parts: EN 4500-002 to EN 4500-005 (specific rules for aluminium, magnesium, heat‑resisting alloys, titanium, steels and filler metals for welding)

Note: prEN 4500-006 is a draft European Standard distributed for review and comment and may change before final publication.

Introduction
This document is part of the series of EN metallic material standards for aerospace applications. The
general organization of this series is described in EN 4258.
The EN 4500 series (Aerospace series — Metallic materials — Rules for drafting and presentation of
material standards) is composed by the following documents:
— General rules EN 4500-001;
— Specific rules for aluminium, aluminium alloys and EN 4500-002;
magnesium alloys
— Specific rules for heat-resisting alloys EN 4500-003;
— Specific rules for titanium and titanium alloys EN 4500-004;
— Specific rules for steels EN 4500-005;
— Specific rules for filler metals for welding EN 4500-002 to EN 4500-005;
— Specific rules for filler metals for brazing EN 4500-006.
Basis for the drafting of all European standards is CEN/CENELEC Internal Regulations — Part 3:
Principles and rules for the structure and drafting of CEN and CENELEC documents.
