Overview

EN 748:2013+A1:2018 is the CEN European standard for playing field equipment - football goals, defining functional and safety requirements plus test methods for permanent and portable goals used in outdoor sports facilities and indoor arenas. It covers four design types and two official competition sizes (7.32 m × 2.44 m and 5.00 m × 2.00 m), specifies permitted materials, dimensional tolerances, and prescribes mechanical strength and stability tests. Portable/lightweight goals covered by EN 16579 and EN 16664 are explicitly excluded.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope & classification
    • Applies to Types 1–4 (socketed, net-supports, freestanding with ground fixings, freestanding with counterweight).
    • Two sizes: 7.32×2.44 m and 5.00×2.00 m (± tolerances).
  • Dimensions & design
    • Uprights and crossbar must have the same cross-section; crossbar permanent deformation limited to ≤ 10 mm under the strength test.
    • Nets, net head line and net supports have defined dimensions and attachment rules to avoid rebounds and through-passes.
  • Materials
    • Goal frames: steel, light metal or plastics if requirements are met.
    • Ground sockets, frames and net support poles: corrosion-protected steel or light metal (e.g., hot-dip galvanized, powder coated).
    • Net yarns: synthetic or natural fibres; net head line: synthetic rope.
  • Safety
    • Rounded exposed edges (radius ≥ 3 mm).
    • No entrapment hazards above 1 200 mm (minimum angle and opening size limits).
    • Net fixings designed to avoid injury (e.g., no exposed cup hooks; specified external openings).
  • Test methods
    • Strength: vertical load test of 1 800 N applied to crossbar for ≥1 s; measure permanent deformation 30 min after removal.
    • Stability: horizontal load test of 1 100 N at crossbar top (Types 1–3) using a 3 000 mm rope; goals must not fall or slide. Type 4 has a dedicated stability test.
    • Net fixings and rope breaking force tests (net head line classes: e.g., Z = 7 000 N, Y = 3 000 N).

Applications and users

This standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers and designers of football goals - to ensure compliant frames, nets and fixings.
  • Sports facility owners, stadium operators and schools - for safe procurement and installation.
  • Installation contractors and maintenance teams - to follow foundation, socket and safety guidance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors - to apply the prescribed mechanical and stability tests.
  • Sport federations and procurement officers - to reference for competition equipment requirements.

Related standards

  • EN 16579:2018 - portable and socketed goals (related exclusions)
  • EN 16664 - lightweight goals
  • EN ISO 1806, EN ISO 2307 - referenced test methods for net and rope properties
