Approval testing of welders - Fusion welding - Part 4: Nickel and nickel alloys (ISO 9606-4:1999)
This standard specifies essential requirements, ranges of approval, test conditions, acceptance requirements and
certification for the approval testing of welder performance for the welding of nickel.
This standard applies to the approval testing of welders for the fusion welding of nickel.
This standard is intended to provide the basis for the mutual recognition by examining bodies for approval relating to
welders' competence in the various fields of application. Tests will be carried out in accordance with this standard unless
more severe tests are specified by the relevant application standard when these are applied.
During the approval test the welder should be required to show adequate practical experience and job knowledge (test
non mandatory) of the welding processes, materials and safety requirements for which he is to be approved; information
on these aspects is given in Annex A.
This standard is applicable when the welder's approval testing is required by the purchaser, by inspection authorities or
by other organizations.
The welding processes referred to in this standard include those fusion welding processes which are designated as
manual or partly mechanized welding. It does not cover fully mechanized and automatic processes (see 5.2).
This standard covers approval testing of welders for work on semi-finished and finished products made from wrought,
forged or cast material types listed in 5.4.
The certificate of approval testing is issued under the sole responsibility of the examiner or examining body.
l'organisme d'examen.

Overview
EN ISO 9606-4:1999 - Approval testing of welders - Fusion welding - Part 4: Nickel and nickel alloys (ISO 9606-4:1999) is a CEN-adopted international standard that defines the scope and requirements for qualifying welders to perform fusion welding of nickel and nickel alloys. The standard sets out essential requirements, test conditions, acceptance criteria and certification procedures intended to enable mutual recognition of welder approvals among examining bodies.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope of approval: Applies to manual and partly mechanized fusion welding processes for nickel and nickel alloys; excludes fully mechanized and automatic processes (see clause 5.2).
- Test content: Specifies ranges of approval, test conditions and acceptance requirements for welder performance tests (general framework only - see standard for details).
- Certification: Certificate of approval is issued under the sole responsibility of the examiner or examining body.
- Mutual recognition: Designed to provide a common basis for mutual recognition of welder competence among examining authorities and purchasers.
- Practical experience and job knowledge: During approval testing the welder may be required to demonstrate practical experience and job knowledge of welding processes, materials and safety requirements; guidance on this is provided in Annex A (the knowledge test is non-mandatory).
- Materials covered: Applies to semi-finished and finished products made from wrought, forged or cast nickel and nickel alloy types listed in clause 5.4 of the standard.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Welding employers and contractors qualifying welders for nickel welding work.
- Certification and examining bodies performing welder approval testing.
- Inspection authorities and purchasers requiring documented welder competence for nickel fabrication.
- Training organizations, welding supervisors and quality managers establishing welder qualification programs.
- Industrial sectors that require reliable nickel welding (e.g., chemical processing, marine, power generation, and specialty alloy fabrication).
Practical value
- Provides a harmonized, recognizable framework for welder qualification specifically for nickel materials.
- Helps ensure consistent test methodology, acceptance criteria and documentation across organizations and borders.
- Facilitates procurement and inspection decisions by offering standardized evidence of welder competence.
Related standards
- Other parts of ISO 9606 cover approval testing of welders for different materials and processes; consult the ISO 9606 series and relevant application standards for more stringent or specific testing requirements.
