SIST EN 15036-2:2007
(Main)Heating boilers - Test regulations for airborne noise emissions from heat generators - Part 2: Flue gas noise emissions at the outlet of the heat generator
- Abstract
This European Standard applies to heat generators according to EN 15036-1, which are connected to chimneys/ducts which discharge combustion products via a duct into open air.
The data measured according to this European Standard will probably be different from the noise radiated from the end of the chimney.
Readings from forced-draught burners complying with EN 267 or EN 676 are only applicable in practice if they have been taken in conjunction with a boiler. Noise emitted into chimneys/ducts by heat generators operating independently of indoor air can also be measured in accordance with this European Standard.
Boilers supplied with combined air inlet and exhaust terminal configuration where ducts are within an external wall can be measured according to one of the test methods detailed in EN 15036-1.
This European Standard describes the objective procedure for determining sound power levels LW, at the outlet of a heat generator that is emitting broad-band, narrow-band, or tonal continuous sound.
This European Standard is applicable to boilers designed to be connected to a chimney or flue duct with a duct size greater than or equal to 0,06 m and whose mean flue gas flow at the microphone head is less than 5 m/s.
This European Standard only applies for test purposes under laboratory conditions.

SIST EN 15036-2:2007 is the Slovene standard published by SIST, identical to EN 15036-2:2006. It specifies a laboratory test method for measuring flue gas noise emissions at the outlet of heat generators and for determining sound power levels in the duct. The standard is aimed at boiler and heat-generator testing where the appliance is connected to a chimney or flue duct.
What does SIST EN 15036-2:2007 specify?
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 covers an objective procedure for measuring airborne flue gas noise from heat generators according to EN 15036-1 when combustion products are discharged through a duct into open air. It is intended for boilers and related heat generators, and it applies only under laboratory test conditions.
The document also makes clear what kind of result the method represents in practice. The measured data may differ from the noise radiated from the end of the chimney, so the method is for repeatable test results rather than a direct prediction of outdoor noise at the chimney outlet.
| Annex | What it covers |

What are the key requirements of SIST EN 15036-2:2007?
Test set-up and applicability
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 applies to heat generators connected to chimneys or ducts with a duct size of at least 0.06 m and with mean flue gas flow at the microphone head below 5 m/s. The test is for broad-band, narrow-band, or tonal continuous sound. In practice, this means the method is aimed at stable acoustic emissions from appliances that can be fitted to a defined test duct.
For forced-draught burners complying with EN 267 or EN 676, the readings are only relevant when the burner is tested together with a boiler. Boilers with combined air inlet and exhaust terminal arrangements in an external wall are measured using one of the test methods in EN 15036-1.
Duct arrangement and anechoic termination
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 requires a straight, coaxial, constant circular test duct and an anechoic termination. The duct and transitions are specified so that reflections and vibration effects do not distort the measurement. This matters because the sound level is measured in the duct, not at the chimney outlet itself.
The standard gives dimensional limits for the intermediate duct, transition lengths, test duct length, microphone position, and duct cross-sectional area. It also sets limits for the pressure reflection coefficient of the anechoic termination, with Annex A and Annex B giving the design and verification guidance. In practice, the test duct has to behave like an acoustically controlled measuring channel.
Instrumentation and calibration
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 calls for a Class 1 microphone in accordance with EN 61672-1, a third-octave filter complying with EN 61260, and calibration with a Class 1 sound calibrator according to EN 60942 before and after each measurement cycle. The band centre frequencies must follow EN ISO 266.
This is important because the method relies on repeatable acoustic measurement rather than approximate listening or visual inspection. Good calibration and filter accuracy are needed if the result is to be comparable between laboratories.
Measurement procedure
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 requires the appliance to be tested in stable operating conditions, at the operating point with the highest noise emission, usually nominal output. Start-up, shut-down, and domestic hot water operation are not part of the measurement. The sound pressure level is measured as a global A-weighted level and in third-octave bands, usually from 50 Hz to 5 000 Hz.
The standard also sets minimum measurement times and background-noise conditions. For low-frequency bands, longer averaging times are needed. In practice, the operator has to wait for stable operation, measure long enough for a reliable average, and ensure the background noise is sufficiently lower than the source noise.
Calculations and reporting
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 gives formulas for averaging sound pressure levels across measurement positions and for converting them into sound power level in the duct. Annex C then gives the method for calculating the A-weighted sound power level from octave-band or one-third-octave-band levels.
The test report has to identify the appliance, the fuel, the operating conditions, the duct arrangement, the instrumentation, the acoustic environment, and the measurement results, including A-weighted sound power level, third-octave-band levels, standard deviation, and measurement uncertainty. That allows a buyer, manufacturer, or test house to trace how the result was obtained.
What terms does SIST EN 15036-2:2007 define?
- Test duct - The duct in which the heat generator’s sound power is measured; it includes the anechoic termination so the measurement can be made under controlled acoustic conditions.
- Intermediate duct - The duct fitted on the intake and discharge side of the heat generator to create the desired flow conditions before the test duct.
- Sound pressure level (Lp) - A logarithmic measure of sound pressure in decibels, used here at one or more microphone positions in the duct.
- Sound power level (Lw) - A logarithmic measure of acoustic power in decibels, used to express the sound radiated into the test duct.
- A-weighted sound power level (LWA) - The sound power level adjusted with A-weighting to reflect the frequency sensitivity used in noise assessment.
- Pressure reflection coefficient (ra) - A measure of how much sound is reflected by the anechoic termination rather than absorbed.
- One-third-octave band - A narrow frequency band used to describe the spectrum of the emitted noise in detail.
Who uses SIST EN 15036-2:2007?
SIST EN 15036-2:2007 is used by boiler manufacturers, burner manufacturers, acoustic test laboratories, and certification or quality teams that need repeatable noise-emission data for heat generators. It is also relevant to engineers who design flue systems and silencers, because the introduction links the measured duct sound pressure level and spectrum to expected noise in the vicinity and to the rating of flue gas silencers.
Quality managers and buyers use it when they need a defined laboratory method to compare products, document noise performance, or check that test reports contain the required operating conditions, duct details, and uncertainty information.
Which standards are used with SIST EN 15036-2:2007?
- EN 15036-1 - Provides the companion test methods for airborne noise emissions from heat generators and is used for the cases this part does not cover.
- EN 437 - Specifies test gases, test pressures, and appliance categories for gas-fired testing.
- CEN/TR 1749 - Classifies gas appliances by the method of evacuation of combustion products and helps define the test arrangement type.
- EN 60942 - Specifies the sound calibrator used for system checks.
- EN 61260 - Specifies the octave-band and fractional-octave-band filters used in the measurement chain.
- EN 61672-1 - Specifies the Class 1 sound level meter requirements.
- EN ISO 266 - Gives the preferred centre frequencies for the frequency analysis.
- EN ISO 5136:2003 - Provides the measurement basis and definitions used for in-duct sound power work and is the technical basis named in the introduction.
- EN 267 and EN 676 - Are cited for forced-draught burners in the scope, especially where burner readings are only meaningful when taken with a boiler.

Introduction
Establishing the A-weighted sound pressure level and its spectral distribution in the flue gas path of a heat
generator is significant for estimating the noise emission expected in the vicinity and for the rating of flue gas
silencers. This European Standard describes a procedure for measuring sound pressure levels in the flue gas
path of heat generators derived from EN ISO 5136:2003.
The sound power radiated from a heat generator through its flue gas path depends to some extent on the
design of the flue gas system (changes in direction and cross-section, installations, and natural frequencies)
as described by the acoustic impedance. Any measurement procedure therefore requires the measurement
duct to be specified unambiguously if comparable readings are to be obtained. In the procedure described
here, the measurement duct has a circular cross-section and is fitted with a low-reflection end-piece as
described in annex A. The sound power measured under these conditions can be regarded as representative
for all practical applications.
The level of measurement uncertainty is described by the standard deviation that is to be expected if the same
readings are taken in different laboratories.
1 Scope
This European Standard applies to heat generators according to EN 15036-1, which are connected to
chimneys/ducts which discharge combustion products via a duct into open air.
The data measured according to this European Standard will probably be different from the noise radiated
from the end of the chimney.
Readings from forced-draught burners complying with EN 267 or EN 676 are only applicable in practice if they
have been taken in conjunction with a boiler. Noise emitted into chimneys/ducts by heat generators operating
independently of indoor air can also be measured in accordance with this European Standard.
Boilers supplied with combined air inlet and exhaust terminal configuration where ducts are within an external
wall can be measured according to one of the test methods detailed in EN 15036-1.
This European Standard describes the objective procedure for determining sound power levels L at the
W,
outlet of a heat generator that is emitting broad-band, narrow-band, or tonal continuous sound.
This European Standard is applicable to boilers designed to be connected to a chimney or flue duct with a
duct size greater than or equal to 0,06 m and whose mean flue gas flow at the microphone head is less than
5 m/s.
This European Standard only applies for test purposes under laboratory conditions.

4.1 General
For the tests the boiler shall be installed and fired with fuels in accordance with the appliance manufacturer’s
instructions. For a gas boiler the test gas shall be in accordance with the appliance category and EN 437. The
fuel used for the test shall be stated in the test report.
According to CEN/TR 1749, the test arrangement for type B and type C boilers with non-concentric ducts,
shall consist of the boiler under test, an intermediate duct, the test duct with anechoic termination and the
instrumentation (see Figure 1 and Figure 2).
According to CEN/TR 1749, the test arrangement for type C boilers with concentric ducts (C1 and C3), shall
consist of the boiler under test to which is applied the pressure drop corresponding to the maximum length of
flue declared by the manufacturer, its test duct with anechoic termination and the instrumentation. For type C
boilers which can only be installed with short flue ducts e. g. 300 mm which are supplied with the boiler by the
appliance manufacturer shall be measured using one of the test methods according to EN 15036-1.
