Overview

SIST EN ISO 5845-1:2002 sets out the general principles for the simplified representation of assemblies involving fasteners-such as bolts, screws, rivets, and holes-on technical drawings. Developed by CEN and ISO, this international standard enables clear, concise, and standardized communication among engineers, designers, manufacturers, and quality controllers involved in mechanical engineering and product definition.

By defining how to represent fasteners symbolically instead of in full detail, SIST EN ISO 5845-1:2002 facilitates a more efficient drafting process, especially when a large number of fasteners are included. This approach aligns with requirements for the accurate transfer of design intent, microcopying, and reprography.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application: Applies to technical and mechanical engineering drawings requiring the depiction of assemblies using fasteners.
  • Representation Methods:
    • Conventional Drawing: Used for assemblies with a small number of fasteners or when full clarity is required.
    • Symbolic Representation: Recommended for drawings with many fasteners, expediting drafting and improving legibility.
  • General Principles:
    • Use of standardized symbols for holes, bolts, screws, and rivets.
    • Consistency in representation, regardless of the drawing’s scale.
    • Clear differentiation of fastener types, positions, and installation methods.
  • Dimensional Indication:
    • Fastener and hole dimensions shown with leader lines and standard notation.
    • Group dimensioning for multiple, identical elements allowed for simplicity and clarity.
  • Alignment with Other Standards: References and integrates with ISO 128 (drawing presentation), ISO 129 (dimensioning), and ISO 10209 (technical drawing terminology).

Applications

SIST EN ISO 5845-1:2002 is highly valuable in various industries where mechanical assemblies are common. Its practical applications include:

  • Mechanical Engineering: Streamlines technical drafting for machine components, structural assemblies, and construction drawings.
  • Manufacturing: Supports efficient communication in fabrication, assembly, and quality inspection processes, reducing errors related to the interpretation of fastener arrangements.
  • Engineering Documentation: Facilitates the production of legible and standardized documents for internal records and external collaboration.
  • Training and Education: Sets clear guidelines for technical drawing instruction, ensuring consistency across learning institutions and professional practice.

By using simplified symbols, organizations save time in drafting, reduce clutter in complex diagrams, and ensure international consistency in fastener representation.

Related Standards

Adherence to SIST EN ISO 5845-1:2002 may require familiarity with several related standards:

  • ISO 128: General principles of presentation in technical drawings.
  • ISO 129: Guidelines for dimensioning and tolerance indication.
  • ISO 5845-2: Specific guidance for rivets used in aerospace equipment.
  • ISO 10209: Terminology for technical product documentation and types of technical drawings.

These standards together form a robust framework for the accurate and efficient communication of assembly details in technical documentation.

Using SIST EN ISO 5845-1:2002 enhances the clarity, efficiency, and international compatibility of technical drawings involving fasteners. Its broad applicability across engineering and manufacturing sectors makes it an essential reference for professionals aiming for excellence in mechanical design and documentation.

Foreword
IS0 (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national standards bodies (IS0 member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through IS0
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. IS0
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
International Standard IS0 5845-l was prepared by Technical Committee
ISOfTC 10, Technical drawings, product definition and related documen-
tation, Subcommittee SC 6, Mechanical engineering documentation.
This first edition of IS0 5845-l is a partial revision of IS0 5261 :1981,
clause 3 of which has been technically revised.
IS0 5845 consists of the following parts, under the general title Technical
drawings - Simplified representation of the assembly of parts with
fasteners:
- Part 7: General principles
- Part 2: Rivets for aerospace equipment

Introduction
IS0 5845 has been devised to provide a universal means of communi-
cation among the various parties involved in the design and manufacture,
in general, as well as the installation of fasteners.
The representation of fasteners on technical drawings should conform to
one of the following two methods, which must meet requirements for
microcopying and reproduction:
a) conventional drawing of fasteners (according to IS0 128); this method
is particularly suitable for drawings containing a small number of
fasteners, or when the use of symbols may not provide complete
understanding;
.
symbo IIC repres e ntatio this method is best suited to drawings con-
b) n;
taining a large n U mber of fasteners (s ee clauses 4 and 5).
Requirements within industries vary considerably; in recognition of this
fact, IS0 5845 is presented in two parts. Part 1 is mainly devoted to
structural metal work. Part 2 is mainly devoted to aerospace equipment.
Both are recommended for application to other fields as well.
