Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards institutes (ISO member bedies). The work of developing Inter-
national Standards is carried out through ISO technical committees. Every member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been set up has the
right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the ’work.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for approval before their acceptance as International Standards by
the ISO Council.
International Standard ISO 5138/3 was developed by Technical Committee
ISO/TC 95, Office machines, and was circulated to the member bodies in
September 1979.

Office machines give rise to numerous international commercial exchanges which
often become difficult, either because of the great variety of terms used in various
fields or languages to express the same concept, or because of the absence of, or the
imprecision of, useful concepts.
To avoid misunderstandings due to this Situation and to facilitate such exchanges, it is
advisable to select terms to be used in various languages or in various countries to ex-
press the same concept and to establish definitions providing satisfactory equivalents
for the various terms in different languages.
The work of the ISO Sub-Committee charged with the study of the Vocabulary was
based on various international documents issued by Sub-Committees of ISO Technical
Committee 95 and on national drafts or Standards.
ISO 5138 consists of several sections published separately, each section dealing with a
category of Office machines. The numbering of these sections, beginning with 01,
depends on the chronological Order of their development.
A basic classification of machines has been introduced at the beginning of each sec-
tion, before the vocabulary proper

Les machines de bureau donnent lieu a de tres nombreux echanges commerciaux inter-
nationaux qui sont souvent rendus difficiles, soit par Ia diversite des termes employes
dans differents milieux ou dans differentes langues pour exprimer une meme notion,
soit par I ’absence ou I ’imprecision des definitions des notions utiles.
Pour eviter des malentendus ayant leur origine dans Ie vocabulaire et faciliter ces
echanges, il convient de proceder a un choix des termes a employer dans les differen-
tes langues ou dans les differents pays, pour designer Ia meme notion, et de rediger
des definitions assurant une equivalence pratiquement satisfaisante entre ces diffe-
rents termes.
Les travaux du sous-comite de I ’ISO Charge de I ’etude du vocabulaire ont et6 fondes
sur differents documents internationaux issus des divers sous-comites du comite tech-
nique 95 de I ’ISO, ainsi que sur des normes ou projets nationaux.
L ’ISO 5138 camporte un certain nombre de chapitres publies separement, correspon-
dant chacun a une categorie de machines de bureau. Leur numerotation, commencant
par 01, ne tient campte que de I ’ordre chronologique dans lequel ils ont et6 elabores.
Au debut de chaque chapitre figure, avant Ie vocabulaire proprement dit, une classif i-
cation de base des machines.
