Overview
ISO 7296-1:1991/Amd 1:1996 is an important international standard issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) focused on cranes and their graphic symbols. This amendment updates Part 1, titled "General," by deleting certain graphic symbols that were originally included but subsequently introduced in ISO 7296-2. The standard is essential for ensuring clear, consistent representation of crane controls and operational elements through universally recognized graphic symbols.
The amendment reflects evolving best practices in crane safety and operation graphical notations, streamlining symbol usage by removing redundancies between Part 1 and Part 2 of ISO 7296. It is maintained by ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 96, Subcommittee SC 6, which specializes in mobile cranes.
Key Topics
Graphic Symbol Updates
This amendment deletes specific symbols (e.g., outrigger, stabilizer, clam shell bucket) from ISO 7296-1 as these symbols have been incorporated into ISO 7296-2. This move harmonizes symbol usage across parts of the ISO 7296 series, avoiding duplication.Revised Symbol Set
Replacement and redefinition of key symbols including:- Interior/dome light
- Heater/interior heating
- Windscreen/windshield demister/defroster
Alphabetical Index Overhaul
The amendment revises alphabetical indexes in English, French, and Russian to reflect updated symbols, enhancing ease of reference and international applicability.Scope and Applicability
Encompasses lifting equipment, hoists, and mobile cranes, focusing on standardized graphical communication for operational and control panels.Collaborative Development
Developed through ISO/TC 96 with input from international committees and liaison with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), ensuring broad consensus and cross-sector applicability.
Applications
Crane Operation Manuals and Control Panels
Implements standard graphic symbols to promote operator understanding, safety, and efficiency. Graphic symbols help quickly convey important functional information on crane control panels and documentation.Training and Safety Programs
Facilitates standardized learning materials and safety instructions based on universally accepted symbols, reducing misinterpretation and operational errors.Industrial Equipment Design
Assists engineers and designers in selecting appropriate graphical symbols for mobile cranes and lifting equipment interfaces.International Compliance and Communication
Supports companies and organizations operating cranes globally by harmonizing control graphic symbols across language and cultural barriers.
Related Standards
ISO 7296-2:1996
Supplements ISO 7296-1 by covering additional specific symbols for cranes, including those removed from Part 1 by this amendment. Provides further detail for mobile crane graphical symbols.ISO 7000 Series
Related series of graphical symbols for use on equipment, referenced in the amendment for certain light and heating symbols, ensuring consistency with broader electrotechnical standards.ISO/TC 96 Standards on Lifting Equipment
A suite of standards governing safety, performance, and terminology related to cranes and handling equipment.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide
federation of national Standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work
of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Esch member body interested in a subject for
which a technical committee has been established has the right to be
represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission
(IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are
circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International
Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting
a vote.
Amendment 1 to International Standard ISO 7296-1:1991 was prepared by
Technical Committee lSO/TC 96, Granes, Subcommittee SC 6, Mobile
cranes.
At a later date, this amendment will be incorporated in a second edition of
ISO 7296-1.
