ISO/TC 96/SC 6 - Mobile cranes

This document specifies a standard presentation or format for mobile crane rated capacities on rated capacity charts. It is applicable to mobile cranes fitted with boom and boom/jib combinations as defined in ISO 4306-2.

This document establishes a general classification of mobile cranes and related crane mechanisms based on the service conditions, mainly expressed by the following: — the total number of working cycles to be carried out during the specified design life of the crane; — the load spectrum factor which represents the relative frequencies of loads to be handled; — the average load displacements. This document is applicable for the work spectrum between moderate to very heavy number of work cycles as described in Table 2.

This document establishes graphical symbols for use on operator controls and other displays on mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑2.

This document applies the principles set forth in ISO 8686‑1 to mobile cranes, as defined in ISO 4306‑2, and presents loads and load combinations appropriate for use in proof-of-competence calculations for the steel structures of mobile cranes. This document is applicable to mobile cranes used for normal and duty cycle service. NOTE Means for proof-of-competence testing will be addressed in another document.

ISO 8566-2:2016 establishes the criteria for cabins for mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑2. These criteria are intended to cover cabins only for crane operation and not for road travel. The general criteria for cabins on mobile cranes are presented in ISO 8566‑1.

ISO 11660-2:2015 establishes the particular requirements relating to access, guards and restraints for mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑1. ISO 11660‑1 establishes the general requirements for access to control stations and other areas of cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑1, during normal operations, maintenance, inspection, erection and dismantling. It also deals with guards and restraints in general, concerning the protection of persons on or near the crane with regard to moving parts, falling objects or live parts.

ISO 11662-2:2014 presents a test method for the structural competence under static loading of mobile cranes. This test method is to provide a systematic, non-destructive procedure for determining the stresses induced in crane structures under specified conditions of static loading through the use of resistance-type electric strain gauges, and to specify appropriate acceptance criteria for specified loading conditions. ISO 11662-2:2014 applies to mobile construction-type lifting cranes utilizing a) rope-supported, lattice boom attachment or lattice boom, and fly jib attachment, b) rope-supported, mast attachment and mast-mounted boom, and fly jib attachment, or c) telescoping boom attachment or telescopic boom and fly jib attachment. Mobile crane manufacturers can use ISO 11662-2:2014 to verify their design for the mobile crane types illustrated in its Annex E.

ISO 9928-2:2014 specifies the contents of a manual for the operators of mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306 2.

ISO 4305:2014 specifies the conditions to be taken into consideration when verifying the stability of a mobile crane by calculation, assuming that the crane is operating on a firm and level surface (up to 1 % gradient). It applies to mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2, i.e. appliances mounted on wheels (tires) or crawlers, with or without outriggers with the exception of loader cranes.

ISO 10245-2:2014 specifies the requirements for devices which limit and/or indicate the loads, motions, performance, and environment of mobile cranes. The general requirements for limiting and indicating devices for cranes are given in ISO 10245‑1. ISO 10245-2:2014 applies to all mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306‑2.

ISO 15442:2012 specifies the minimum requirements for the design, calculation, examination and testing of hydraulic powered loader cranes and their mountings onto chassis or static foundations. It is not applicable to loader cranes used on board ships or floating structures or to articulated boom system cranes designed as a total integral part of special equipment such as forwarders.

ISO 4306-2:2012 establishes a vocabulary of terms and definitions relating to the basic types of self-powered mobile cranes.

ISO 7752-2:2011 establishes the arrangement, requirements and direction of movement of the basic controls for slewing, load hoisting and lowering, and boom luffing and telescoping, on mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2. It deals with bi-directional controls and the basic arrangement and requirements for cross-shift levers (multi-directional controls). It is intended to be used in conjunction with ISO 7752-1.

ISO/TR 19661:2010 provides a guide to International Standards applicable to mobile cranes (crawler cranes, railway cranes, wheel-mounted cranes and any variations thereof that retain the same fundamental characteristics) and a summary of related provisions. Special adaptations of the general types of machine covered, where applicable, also fall within its scope.

ISO 10972-2:2009 establishes requirements specific to the mechanisms of mobile cranes, in addition to the general requirements for cranes given in ISO 10972-1. These additional requirements concern the arrangement, features and characteristics of the crane mechanisms, and the minimum requirements for certain mechanism components. Rules for the proof of competence calculation regarding different limit states (yield strength, fatigue, wear) are excluded from ISO 10972-2:2009.

Establishes general principles for the design and application of safety signs and hazard pictorials permanently affixed to cranes. Describes the basic safety sign formats, specifies colours for safety signs and provides guidance on developing the various panels that together constitute a safety sign.

Specifies a test method to determine the maximum capacity of a mobile crane to counterbalance loads applied on its hook block. The test is applicable for cranes whose capacity to support loads is based on its static resistance to overturning. The test shall not be used on cranes whose capacity is based on structural strenght or on limitations due to available load hoist, jib hoist or jib telescope capability. Applies to all mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2.

ISO 4301-2:2009 establishes a system of classification for mobile cranes and related crane mechanisms, based on the number of operating cycles to be carried out during a crane's expected life, representing a nominal state of loading. It is applicable to the basic types of self-propelled mobile crane and their parts as defined in ISO 4306-2.

ISO 9928-2:2007 specifies the contents of a crane driving manual for the operators of mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2.

ISO 15442:2005 specifies minimum requirements for design, calculation, examinations and tests of hydraulic powered loader cranes and their mountings on to vehicles or static foundations. It applies to all new loader cranes manufactured one year after its publication. It is not the intent of this International Standard to require the retrofitting of existing loader cranes. ISO 15442:2005 does not apply to loader cranes used on board ships or floating structures and to articulated boom system cranes which are designed as total integral parts of special equipment such as forwarders. ISO 15442:2005 identified the hazards that it covers. It does not cover hazards related to the lifting of persons.

ISO 8686-2:2004 applies the principles set forth in ISO 8686-1 to mobile cranes, as defined in ISO 4306-2, and presents loads and load combinations appropriate for use in proof-of-competence calculations for the steel structures of mobile cranes. ISO 8686-2:2004 is applicable to mobile cranes used for normal service and to mobile cranes used for duty cycle service. NOTE Means for proof-of-competence testing will be addressed in another document.

Establishes the criteria for cabins for mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2. These criteria are intended to cover cabins only for crane operation and not for road travel.

Establishes a vocabulary in English, French and Russian of the most commonly used terms in the field of cranes, lifting appliances and related equipment. Defines the terms relating to the basic types of self-powered mobile cranes. Excavators and other construction machines as described in ISO 6165 are excluded.

Specifies criteria for steps, stairways, ladders, walkways, platforms, handrails, handholds, guardrails and entrance openings which permit access to and from operator, inspection or maintenance platforms on mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2 and parked in accordance with the manufacturer's instruction. Also presents requirements for guards and restraints as related to moving parts.

Specifies the requirements for devices which limit and/or indicate the loads, motions, performance and environment of mobile cranes. The general requirements for limiting and indicating devices for cranes are given in ISO 10245-1. Applies to all mobile cranes as defined in 4306-2. Some basic machine types within this scope are convertible for use in excavating work and other applications not considered to be lifting service. The requirements given here are applicable only to such machines when used as lifting cranes.

Establishes the values of the minimum practical coefficients of utilization for ropes and rotation-resistant ropes used on mobile cranes. Applies to all mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-2.

Establishes a classification of mobile cranes and related crane mechanisms based on the number of operating cycles to be carried out during the expected life and on a load spectrum factor which represents a nominal state of loading. Applies to basic types of self-propelled mobile cranes and their parts as defined in ISO 4306-2.

Establishes a consistent arrangement and movement for the basic controls used during the crane-operation cycle for slewing, load hoisting and lowering, jib luffing and telescoping. Defines the requirements, and direction of movement of these controls. Deals with bi-directional controls. Cross-shift levers (multi-directional) are under consideration.

Establishes the minimum ratio of the pitch diameters of the drum and sheave to the nominal diameter of the rope for hoisting and luffing operations. Applies to all basic types of self-propelled mobile cranes as defined in ISO 4306-1.
