Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through
ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee
has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations,
governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely
with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are described
in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the different types
of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the editorial rules of the
ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www.iso.org/directives).
ISO draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). ISO takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent
rights in respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, ISO had not received notice of (a)
patent(s) which may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that
this may not represent the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at
www.iso.org/patents. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

For an explanation of the voluntary nature of standards, the meaning of ISO specific terms and expressions
related to conformity assessment, as well as information about ISO's adherence to the World Trade
Organization (WTO) principles in the Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), see www.iso.org/iso/foreword.html.
This document was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 126, Tobacco and tobacco products.
Any feedback or questions on this document should be directed to the user’s national standards body. A

Tobacco heating systems — Vocabulary
AMENDMENT 1
3.1.1, 3.1.2 and 3.1.3
Replace Note 2 to entry with the following:
Note 2 to entry Annex A provides a testing methodology to support the assessment of whether or not combustion
occurs in a tobacco heating system during operation.
and add the following Note 3 to entry:
Note 3 to entry Annex B gives examples of CO, NO, NO ranges for combustible cigarettes and THS; and Figure B.1
x
plots ranges extracted from published data.
3.2.1, 3.2.2 and 3.2.3
Replace Note 5 to entry with the following:
Note 5 to entry Annex A provides a testing methodology to support the assessment of whether or not combustion
occurs in a tobacco heating system during operation.
and add the following Note 6 to entry:
Note 6 to entry Annex B gives examples of CO, NO, NO ranges for combustible cigarettes and THS and Figure B.1
x
plots ranges extracted from published data.
Annexes A and B:
Add the following new annexes (Annex A and Annex B) before the Bibliography:
ISO 6080:2024/Amd.1:2025(en)
Annex A
(informative)
Testing methodology to support the assessment of whether or
not combustion occurs in a tobacco heating system (THS) during
operation
Both thermal decomposition and combustion of tobacco result in emissions of carbon monoxide (CO), nitric
[3]
oxide (NO), and nitrogen oxides (NO ) . However, evidence shows that these constituents are produced and
x
[3]-[5]
emitted at substantially higher levels during tobacco combustion compared to thermal decomposition .
Therefore, to support the assessment of whether or not combustion occurs in a THS during operation,
analytical methods to determine CO, NO, and NO yields in emissions from THS can be applied. ISO methods
x
for these constituents are currently under development by the ISO technical committee 126 working
group 22.
The puffing regimes applied for each THS sub-category during THS operation shall be according to those
specified in ISO 5501-1 to ISO 5501-3 “Tobacco heating systems — Definitions and standard conditions for
aerosol generation and collection”.
