Technical drawings - Rolling bearings - Part 1: General simplified representation
The principle of the drawing method in this part is that only essential features are shown, preferably in outline. The degree of simplification depends on the kind of object represented, the scale of the drawing and the purpose of the documentation. Part 2 deals with the detailed simplified representation.

Overview
ISO 8826-1:1989 - Technical drawings - Rolling bearings - Part 1: General simplified representation provides rules for depicting rolling bearings in technical drawings where only the essential features need to be shown. The principle is to use simplified outline symbols (rather than full cross-sectional detail) so that bearings can be represented quickly and clearly in assembly and general documentation. The degree of simplification depends on the object, drawing scale and documentation purpose. ISO 8826-2 covers detailed simplified representation.
Key topics and requirements
- General simplified symbol: For general use, a rolling bearing is represented by a square with a free-standing upright cross centered in the square; the cross must not touch the outlines. This symbol is intended for cases where the exact contour is not required (e.g., assembly drawings).
- True-contour option: If the exact bearing contour is required, show the true outline of the cross-section with the upright cross centrally placed and not touching the outlines.
- Line work and scale:
- Use the same line thickness as other visible outlines on the drawing (line type A per ISO 128).
- The simplified representation must be drawn to the same scale as the rest of the drawing.
- Hatching:
- Avoid hatching in simplified representations.
- If hatching is necessary (for clarity or catalog illustrations), hatch all parts of the bearing that share the same item reference - except the rolling elements - in the same direction using continuous thin lines (type B, ISO 128).
- Different item references may be hatched with different directions/spacing.
- Consistency: To avoid misunderstandings, use only one kind of simplification (general or detailed) within a single drawing.
Practical applications
ISO 8826-1 is useful for:
- Mechanical designers and CAD draughtsmen preparing assembly drawings
- Bearing manufacturers and suppliers producing catalogs or installation instructions
- Technical illustrators and documentation teams creating maintenance manuals
- Quality engineers and procurement teams needing standardized graphical representation Benefits include faster drafting, consistent communication across international teams, and clearer assembly documentation without unnecessary detail.

Iso 8826-1 : 1989 W-1
Introduction
Le but de I’ISO 8826 est de donner des règles pour la représentation simplifiée des rou-
lements.
